I'll be totally honest, this game isn't too terribly much to write home about, but it knows what it wants to be, and does it pretty well. It's a hybrid of wave-based twin-stick shooter, and tower defense, leaning much more on the shooter aspect, and less on the TD end of things. Every day that you survive, you gain a level, and can choose from a small handful of upgrades. As you use your weapons, they gain XP, which then unlocks the next tier of weapons. It's fairly simple, but effective. There is only one thing that I can really think of to complain about, and that there are a few really, really, grindy achievements. This is a game that you could theoretically beat in a few runs, but the fact that there are "kill X amount of Y monster" achievements means that you will absolutely be doing multiple, multiple runs to get the counters full. As a fan of the dev's other work, I am glad that I grabbed this one as well. The low price is 100% on point, and for the amount it costs, you'll get a decent game out of the bargain. Check it out.

Over 9000 Zombies!, developed and published by Loren Lemcke, wears its intentions proudly in its title. It is a game built around excess—excess enemies, excess explosions, excess chaos—and that commitment becomes its defining charm. Instead of constructing a grim, cinematic apocalypse, it embraces the arcade roots of zombie shooters, stripping away narrative complexity to focus entirely on survival, momentum, and the overwhelming thrill of being outnumbered. The result is a frantic top-down action experience where clarity of design, responsive controls, and escalating intensity matter far more than lore or worldbuilding. From the moment the first shambling forms appear onscreen, the game begins accelerating, daring players to keep pace as the field grows more crowded and unforgiving. The gameplay loop blends twin-stick shooting with improvised fortification building, creating a hybrid that rests somewhere between chaotic arena combat and desperate base defense. Early moments often feel manageable—small clusters of zombies, a modest arsenal, and wide-open space to maneuver. But as waves accumulate, the map transforms into a tactical problem, forcing players to carve safe paths through hordes, funnel enemies toward chokepoints, and place turrets or barricades with intelligent foresight. The construction system may seem simple at first glance, yet it encourages creativity by allowing defenses to evolve organically around the flow of battle. Instead of predetermined strategies, players develop defensive layouts based on instinct and necessity, reacting to their own mistakes and successes in real time. Survival becomes a puzzle that changes every second. Weapon progression strengthens this sense of improvisational problem solving. Each new firearm, explosive, or specialty tool introduces subtle shifts in playstyle, encouraging experimentation rather than passive optimization. A rapid-fire rifle might excel at thinning swarms, while a heavy explosive launcher is best reserved for emergency crowd control. Ammunition scarcity prevents blind spraying, forcing players to switch weapons strategically rather than relying on a single favorite. Meanwhile, zombies themselves evolve into faster, stronger, and more varied threats, ensuring that complacency is punished. The game maintains a delicate, satisfying balance—just when a player begins feeling powerful, a new wave or enemy type arrives to challenge their confidence. A major contributor to the game’s appeal is its visual and tonal identity. Over 9000 Zombies! embraces a retro pixel-art style, not out of limitation but deliberate design, giving the battlefield crisp readability even as dozens—or hundreds—of enemies flood the screen. Because enemy shapes, bullets, structures, and effects remain visually distinct, the chaos never devolves into confusion, allowing players to maintain situational awareness despite the scale. The simplicity of the art style also amplifies the exaggerated violence—bright sprays of pixelated gore, collapsing walls, dazzling muzzle flashes, and cascading explosions combine into a kinetic, almost rhythmic spectacle. Paired with its energetic electronic soundtrack that loops and pulses in sync with the action, the game conveys a sense of unstoppable motion that suits its premise perfectly. Structurally, Over 9000 Zombies! favors replayability over long-form progression. There is no grand campaign, elaborate cutscene structure, or extensive character customization system. The game’s longevity emerges instead from player-driven challenge—survive longer, perfect defensive strategies, discover new synergies, and refine reflexes. Procedural map generation and enemy behavior keep each run fresh, ensuring that no two sessions play out identically. This arcade philosophy makes the game easy to return to, whether for a five-minute warm-up or a two-hour survival marathon. It respects the player’s time while still offering depth to those who wish to master its systems. The game’s single-mindedness, however, may limit its audience. Players looking for narrative motivation, RPG progression, or significant mechanical evolution may feel underserved. Its difficulty curve can also be punishing for newcomers, especially those unused to managing movement, resource awareness, and construction simultaneously. Some may find that extended play sessions expose repetition in enemy patterns or stage design. Yet these concerns speak less to design shortcomings and more to the game’s philosophical clarity—it prioritizes mechanical purity above all else, believing that intensity, immediacy, and replayability are reward enough. What makes Over 9000 Zombies! commendable is its unwavering focus. It does not dilute its premise with unnecessary systems or genre blending. Instead, it takes a simple idea—survive overwhelming hordes—and polishes it until every second feels deliberate. Its pacing, audiovisual language, and mechanical escalation demonstrate a deep understanding of arcade sensibilities, capturing the thrill of barely holding back disaster until finally collapsing under the weight of sheer numbers. Losing never feels frustrating because the game encourages players to immediately try again, armed with new strategies, sharper reflexes, and the memory of what went wrong. For players who enjoy high-adrenaline shooters, retro aesthetics, tower-defense improvisation, and horde survival challenges, Over 9000 Zombies! delivers a remarkably satisfying experience. It retains the accessibility of a pick-up-and-play action game while offering enough tactical nuance to sustain long-term engagement. Even years after release, it remains a distinctive entry in the zombie genre—not because it reinvents it, but because it embraces the simplest, most explosive version of it and executes that vision with confidence and personality. In all honesty, I havent played this game in damn near 7-9 years now. It was a cheap game and a really fun time killer back in 2016-2017. I had lots of fun and my friends did too! My only complaint is the only multiplayer is 2 player online co-op. I have 2 other friends and all 3 of us cannot play at the same time unless they are here. I really recommend this developer as even after 10 years since release, they still keep up with their community unlike other games.
