picture the scene: you've paid full price for this game and embark upon career mode for some inexplicable reason, game devs think that players of racing games want to be forced to play through several different types of event; get stuck on the "shield survival" event in a series? tough, you can't progress. hate "eliminator events"? tough, you can't progress. okay, let's try "quick race" mode. what's that? you need to earn credits to unlock tracks? you're making me work just to play the game i have PAID FOR? sir, you realise this is supposed to be a racing game? yes, i know everyone does it, but is it necessary? what's wrong with letting players just try to get gold on every track at every class (in each event type), unlocking a perk or two when you do? it worked well enough in 2097 and wip3out, didn't it? what's the obsession with *enforced variety*? it's infuriating. infuriating enough that i quit the game to write this review. it's doubly infuriating because the races themselves *are* enjoyable: the pacing's good, the graphics are basically what you'd hope for, the sound's solid (the airbrakes are a very nice touch), and the physics feel comfortable and responsive—you can barrel your way through a slalom section at pace with just a couple of slight twitches (that said the line between a successful and failed wall-slide feels paper-thin at first blush); the handful of tracks i have raced through so far seem really nicely designed i haven't raced enough to really judge the weaponry; forcing you to name and save specific configurations of ships when you have literally no choice about what those configurations must be feels bizarre and pointless; having both health and shield in a game like this seems weird, and having a separate "KERS boost" bar on top is just… why? what was wrong with the wip3out approach—you have shield, which can be replenished, when it's gone the race is over, and boosting burns through it—Pacer's take on it smacks of being different for the sake of it, rather than because it's a meaningful improvement on the state of the art as it was twenty years ago would i recommend it? there's no button "yes, but…"

While I was super excited to play this game before its release, there are a few things that held it back when it finally did. The physics were completely changed from when it was Formula Fusion, and it's debatable which was better. One of the main things preventing me from playing is the menu music and UI are irritating. I get in there and just don't want to stick around. But the soundtrack overall is nice, the game is pretty, and it will entertain you for a while. Get it on sale and you won't be disappointed.

Dystopian Wipeout - A bunch of ex-Wipeout people sought to modernize the series and they succeeded, though it sounds like things soured between the devs and Designers Republic; they ended up going back on a bunch of lore + branding envisioned by the firm which helped create Wipeout. I don't say dystopian as a synonym for bad; it's got all kinds of dope modernized touches and it has a grittier aesthetic, but it's like modern real world racing: rampant corporatism smoothed over the rough edges, streamlined things, but at the expense of character and imperfections we all grow attached to. Still, it's a better Wipeout experience than Redout.

still confused about story mode only consisting of a few training courses and a few offline races but most likely because its primary is online play still a great game i would put this right beside redout
