If, like me, you are seeking to play this because you are looking for something to scratch the La-Mulana itch. With neither the Maze of Galious remake by NIGORO nor their next title Ahamkara on the horizon. While you scour the internet for information on them, like two men in the desert licking each others' sweaty skin to stave off their inevitable deaths by dehydration, just to die with a salty tongue, you might be disappointed. The puzzles are barely that, the gods handhold you throughout the entire game on a series of fetch quests, marking everything you need on the map throughout a game that took me about 8 hours, toilet breaks and butt scratching intermissions included. The bosses are fun if you do their associated achievements that restrict you to certain mechanics, but otherwise they are leaves in the wind except for the final boss that practically forces you to execute almost perfectly and use abilities in ways that no other part of the game demands. To be honest, the final boss is the only time the game even felt like La-Mulana, because you need to first figure out how to use your abilities to be able to beat him at all, and even then you need to clench your butt cheeks for some phases. The only time the game approaches the cryptic mysticism and riddles of ye olden games is with the enemy ability mechanic. It functions a bit like Castlevania's Souls absorption, whereas you can defeat enemies and randomly get a soul charge for that enemy, but only one use. To be frank, it's a bad mechanic. having to randomly farm enemies for minutes while waiting for them to respawn on a timer to be able to get one charge of one ability that only can be collected in stacks from one enemy at a time until they are all depleted, majorly sucks. It especially sucks the desire out of you to experiment with any of them, considering the grind involved. If they gave you infinite charges of the currently equipped ability with nerfed damage or boss usage limitations, it would have been infinitely better. I only used these abilities two or three times in the entire game, but there are over 20 different of these. In my opinion the game would be better if they hadn't been so worried about being a soft homage to MSX games and went way more hardcore. The entire game felt like they wanted to create a loving homage to that era, without chasing off people with an aversion to solving any actual riddles or puzzles. Creating a watered down imitation. The whole reason I am still recommending it is because it is still a short, but charming game for a Saturday, it's affordable, on sale or otherwise, and while it is very unlikely to be your favourite game, it is a fun B- game and it doesn't anything to particularly offend to a degree that makes an indie game deserve a disapproving thumb. Also, as I was saying, I have such a need for another gaming experience like La-Mulana, I would shlurp the piggy schlop right out of a trough, as long as it tasted even remotely like the poison I'm aching for. This turned out to not really that, but it was a pleasant enough surprise.

Ok this might not be as polished and stylised as something like Guacamelee BUT.... This is basically a retro multiplayer Metroidania. It includes split screen AND online play for whichever style takes your fancy. As long as the retro vibes don't bother you this is a total steal ESPECIALLY on a sale.

Short, solid Metroidvania heavily inspired by Maze of Galious, with an option to play the game entirely in co-op, though I played solo. If you liked it, La Mulana, or Hydra Castle Labyrinth, you're going to enjoy this game. You have two different characters who you can switch between at any time, essentially melee and ranged, but sadly their differences aren't as strongly defined as something like Castlevania 3 or Astalon: Tears of the Earth. The game opens up basically the entire map to you within the first hour, and there's a nice system where various Greek god's give you Quests that is both required for beating the game and also gives you quite a lot of useful items, like teleporting directly to said god's to turn in quests. There's no real fancy movement tech here, backtracking is made simple as a result of having plenty of global teleports and in-area teleports, and health/money is quite tight early on, but for a game you could easily beat in a weekend if not a day it's well worth the price.

Incredible game. One of the best in the genre. The co-op online multiplayer is incredible . Its only fault is not unlocking achievements in multiplayer.

Probably spent more time trying to figure out how to kill the purple goat than figuring out the rest of the game. 10/10. But it does annoy me that it does not give you achievements on co-op
