A simple way to start a meditation practice. The "game" is mostly there to serve as a way to set a time, and save a few metrics like streak days, time meditated and so on. The story is a little interesting, though because it took me so long to reach each milestone I had somewhat forgotten what was going on. Graphics are nice, nothing absolutely amazing, but for a game that is primarily meant to be "played" with your eyes closed and not clicking or typing, they are nice. I enjoy the ambience of the environment and the weather, though I had to adjust some of the sound levels to reduce distractions. The guided meditations are okay, though there aren't very many of them. They become slightly repetitive, so I usually default to unguided. I had asked in the discord about potentially using other audio files for guided meditations, as there are a huge variety of them freely available online. The response was that the way I could do that is to play it in the background while Playne runs, but that there wouldn't be modification of the game to allow for that. Perhaps relevant to you, perhaps not. All in all, I do highly recommend this game and it's cousin Inward. I think everyone would benefit from meditation and this might help you to make it a habit.

i already was intermediate at meditating going into this game, but something about setting a time limit to your meditation disturbs the peace for me, im just waiting for the timer to run out instead of just meditating, i wish it had a setting where it would just silently record your time and you could stop anytime youre ready, i would come back to this game for the meditation tips but thats all

PLAYNE really shows the limitations of gamify-ing meditation; you can't, really. Which is why this is not a game, but instead provides an environment to meditate in. I appreciated it for that, which is why I recommend it - but most of this review is gripes, hah. For starters, I didn't vibe with the mercilessness of the achievements. It's all about daily streaks, tied to real time, and if you miss one you start over. It was a lot to ask me to sit down at my gaming PC every day but I did make it one month before recognizing it as a chore; I think having a steamdeck would have made the experience more enjoyable to me. Outside of meditation, the fox tells you the same half a dozen sentences, over and over. The environment changes so slowly you can blink and miss it. And the story parts... I did not understand. There's no story, really, but sometimes the fox has a philosophical anecdote to share. As stories, these were incredibly unsatisfying! At least there's not a whole bunch of that. Just a story, now and then, that comes out of nowhere, connects to nothing, and then disappears like smoke into the sky. Don't get PLAYNE to play. Get it as a companion to help you get into daily meditation.

An amazing tool to start meditating, pushes you to practice everyday, and it's nice to have the option to meditate seem as accessible as doomscrolling or grinding. At first, it's just a time for rest, but you feel calmer and more in control of your thoughts if you insist. Pros: [*]Achievements make quite it more compelling to meditate, which is very hard early on [*]The soothing sounds with the evolving environment make a very comfortable experience Cons: [*]On the long run, it is quite wasteful to keep using Playne, while pretty (Unreal engine) it makes your hardware work hard for something that could be done with a timer and a background noise software. [*]The streak system is a double edged sword, it keeps you coming back everyday but if you miss one it can feel quite discouraging, you can disable this once you lose a streak. Info: [*]It has no DRM, you can run it without steam open [*]story mode progression, 1 level for every 7 days, with 10 levels before the ending and plant the tree [*]Saving streaks, 1 minute counts, 2am the day ends and you can change the computer clock for it [*]Save data, press WindowsKey+R, type [%userprofile%/AppAata/Local/PLAYNE] Honest advice, use it to learn the practice and then leave it, focus on building the habit outside the game, dev pushes 20min when you wake and 20min before sleep which is pretty good. If you keep using it, ignore achievements and streak, don't make a healthy practice conditioned on numbers. If the game is too expensive but you want a similar experience, go for Inward from the same dev.

This is a game that does its job. It's pretty good at teaching the basics of meditation, has just about every quality-of-life feature I wanted in a meditation game, and has great sound design (and also graphics, for the people who like meditating with their eyes open). My biggest complaint is that unlocking a cosmetic or achievement once every 2 weeks didn't really work as motivation. Just in case you're wondering, the storytelling in this game is close to nonexistent. I don't know why "story rich" is so high up in its list of tags.
