Retrowave World is a rare kind of game that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel so much as it tries to paint that wheel with glowing neon, throw it under a synthwave sky, and let it spin endlessly into a dreamscape of nostalgia. From the moment you launch the game, it's clear that the focus here is more about evoking a feeling than delivering traditional game mechanics. It captures a stylized, imagined version of the 1980s that never quite existed—a place where pink sunsets stretch forever, chrome shines under moonlight, and the world pulses to retro-futuristic synth music. That emotional hook—of being lost in a vaporwave-infused city with retro-fueled music echoing in your ears—creates a unique tone that very few games even attempt, let alone succeed at. At its core, Retrowave World offers a simple premise: you’re free to cruise around a dreamy open world, hopping between different environments and storefronts, all designed in perfect aesthetic harmony. It isn't a large game in terms of raw geography or scope, but what’s there feels carefully constructed. You're given a small lineup of retro cars to drive, each fitting the world’s mood with its boxy edges and glossy polish. As you explore, you can stop to play arcade games, deliver packages, or just hang out in dimly lit shops and neon alleys. These side activities are more about flavor than function—they add life to the city, even if they don’t necessarily deepen the gameplay. This is a game that thrives on vibe, not complexity, and it leans into that identity unapologetically. Driving, which forms the backbone of the experience, is straightforward and mostly responsive. It won't wow fans of high-speed racers or physics-heavy sims, but it doesn't need to. The act of driving in Retrowave World is less about performance and more about presence. It’s about tuning into the radio, watching the lights blur past, and feeling like you're floating through an 80s fever dream. That said, the controls can feel clunky when you step out of the car to explore on foot. Character movement is noticeably stiff, and transitions between activities occasionally disrupt the otherwise seamless flow of the game. Still, none of these issues seriously detract from the overall experience, especially for players who came for the atmosphere rather than action. Visually, the game is a striking success. Every corner is bathed in vibrant purples, blues, and pinks, giving the impression that time has been frozen inside a synth album cover. Even in Early Access, the environments feel lovingly crafted, down to the smallest details—arcade machines, palm trees, VHS rental shops, and glowing signs that flicker just enough to feel authentic. It's not just retro, it's hyper-retro: a curated vision of a decade romanticized and filtered through digital nostalgia. Paired with a dynamic soundtrack featuring dozens of synthwave tracks, the experience becomes immersive in a way that's difficult to describe. The music doesn’t just accompany the visuals—it amplifies them, turning a simple drive into something almost meditative. The developers have been transparent about the game's early stage. Currently, only a portion of the full vision is implemented, but there’s a clear roadmap in place: more vehicles, more environments, new characters, additional arcade games, and even deeper world-building are all promised for future updates. What’s encouraging is how directly the developers are engaging with their player base, actively responding to feedback and implementing community-driven features. In many ways, the game feels like a collaborative art project—one that invites players not just to observe, but to participate in its evolution. Retrowave World isn't for everyone. Those expecting high-octane racing or tightly structured missions may find the gameplay too light or meandering. But for those drawn to aesthetics, mood, and the simple joy of existing in a beautifully realized world, this game offers something special. It’s an experience that prioritizes feeling over function, and in doing so, taps into a very specific, very powerful form of nostalgia—not for the 80s themselves, but for a shared fantasy of what they could’ve been. As it continues to grow and refine itself, Retrowave World has the potential to become a cult favorite—an ambient, playable mixtape that invites you to lose yourself, one neon mile at a time. To understand RewindApp games is to know what they are, and to like them is to understand them. Retrowave World is a culmination of numerous previous experiments, effectively games as tech demos, and this is no different. Expecting a fully rounded GTA style game? You don't understand. Think a release game should be glitch-free, content heavy and robust? You don't understand. Will you like this game? If you don't already know, then you don't understand. Retrowave games are about vibing, and to an extent about basking in RewindApp's slightly-mad, slighty-genius way of doing things. Retrowave World isn't about goals or gameplay loops or progression or completion. This is for those who are happy to cruise around taking in the unique, stylised 80s themes these games have been building up to, turn up the excellent synthwave and just soak it all in. There of course ARE gameplay loops (about 5) and there IS progression but if you come into this expecting a traditional game you will find them horribly grindy, repetitive and unbalanced. And most of all - unfinished: probably never to be finished if you understand and know RewindApp. Finishing or honouring promises isn't their MO, they'll probably be well onto another EA release of a further crazy idea before a tenth of the expected functions in this game are completed. It is absolutely full of bugs, glitches, borked and removed bits, illogical gameplay and most of all, follies. In the UK a folly is an investment or hell-bent project which ultimately serves no purpose, like an intricately designed and lavishly built building in a place no one can access, see or use it. Retrowave World, for instance, starts in a main compact city but offers routes to 5 other locations, most of which serve only 1 brief purpose or none at all other than to showcase what was happening in RewindApp's mind's eye as he built this monolithic folly. But, BUT - if you do find that you settle in to the vibe and the charm of this gaming experiment you could say instead that there's a lot of effort, a lot of visual content, a lot of charisma and individuality, a lot of coding and thought cleverness and of course, a lot of neon. You mustn't buy this game as a completed game in the traditional sense. You'll most likely think it's a lazy-ass cash grab or rookie failure attempt. But I knew what to expect so once I got into this, I understood what it was. And I really really like it for what it is and if I'm honest I'm glad people are doing this kind of thing as well as well-constructed indies and triple-A monsters. So before you buy this, leave your gamer expectations and entitlements at the door, do a bit of research, maybe play one of the early Retrowave games and see if you 'get it.'

Playing with a controller is stupid at first. The car moves even if you go to the settings. Completing tasks is challenging, but sometimes it loses the route. The meter/mile readings are small. On the mini map, you could put a proper route to place x like in GTA. The graphics are beautiful, the music is good. This game has potential. It's nice to visit different places. Splash of colour. I will give the game a chance and stay to follow the development. There are flaws, but not insurmountable ones.

It's a great game to just chill out with. The early 90s-style UI sets the mood perfectly and the soundtrack is fantastic. The gameplay itself is very basic, with not much to do in your car besides flooring it and drifting around corners, but it's still in early access. Hopefully the dev(s?) will keep working on it. Worth getting on sale.

No joke, this game is perfect for getting high and drunk and playing. The gameplay itself is terrible and wish it wasn't even there. I would rather drive around forever in the landscapes. Wish there was no money or gas or whatever. Takes the fun out of the game. But aside from this, truly, honestly, no joke. This is a perfect game to get wasted and play. I recommend it to everyone.
