CONTEXT: This review is from the perspective of someone who started playing "Risk of Rain 2" before knowing about "Risk of Rain Returns" as well as the original "Risk of Rain" Returns is based off of. Make of that what you will. This here is a great action rogue-like with a lot of emphasis on positioning related to the environment, enemies, your attacks/skills and what the little bean pixels in the middle of your screen that you may call your avatar can do. I find this game's CORE loop to be akin to the spectacle fights of a "Monster Hunter" game. Where you try to find the most available "in the moment" opportunity you can achieve rather than "the best one always", if that makes any sense ha ha! You can not control where your characters can "shoot" the way most of us, newcomers, would think of: with a mouse(?) No! Instead it is based of whatever the skill itself says so coupled to where your character is either: currently facing, is mid-air or not, the current movement input or if its standing still. And while that can (as it certainly did for me) come of as a turn-off at first, this actually pairs really well with the emphasis on POSITIONING! While I still would love for some more customization/accessibility for the aiming aspect, its more of a "wishful" thinking rather than a fair complain. XD That leads me to my real complaint to this one game as a Rogue-Like. The lack of agency in the BUILDING aspects of each run I have. By that I mean: The gave does not give me as a player enough tools/ways of "manipulating the RNG" like in games such as "The Binding of Isaac" or "Noita". And while that in a way can be a boon for players more interested in the action of RORR rather than having to break the flow of combat, I wish it would've implemented elements from the sequel, such as Scrappers and Printers found around the levels. And yes, I am aware of Drifter, I just wish I could do some of the same things she can while playing other characters. '-- Overall this is a game with a lot of interesting ideas, concepts and good game design practices that can still be used as references to future games, to any game developers out there looking for inspiration. While its controls can seem odd at first, their pair perfectly with everything this game is about. "Can't wait to Risk the hell out of my life when the Rain of Petrichor V Returns"

Yes Corporations suck but a lot of the Take Two rhetoric you see on here is overblown. It's pretty much a standard practice EULA you've probably accepted tons of of times without batting an eye. In fact you agreed to most of the same stuff to make your steam account before even purchasing a game from take two. A lot of it is your consent to information that you give up when you fill in your purchase information in the first place. It's all used for market data and metrics.

This is, 100%, one of those remakes that are so good to the point where it flat out replaces the original. A lot of gameplay changes are there to make the experience feel better to play (Especially removing how you need to kill all enemies to clear a teleporter event, though you can re-enable that if you so wish), the new stuff added like the new items, alternate survivor abilities, and the four new music tracks, elevate the original visit to Petrichor V to new heights. If you're a fan of Risk of Rain 2, I'd definitely reccomend trying this one out.

One of my favorite games of all time. Though I may have spent less time with it than it's sequel, risk of rain returns shines so brightly in a sea of remakes and remasters. I hope it is a guiding light for the future of the games industry.

This is everything a remaster should be. Risk of Rain Returns is such a fun game. They took all the good stuff they added in Risk of Rain 2 and transferred it over wonderfully into the styles of the the first game. It is a pure upgrade from the original which was already a fantastic game. Highly recommend.
