Pretty damn good, 30+ hours of content at least I'd estimate even for someone who tears through these, feels like a step in the right direction for Musou games in my opinion. Comparing the game to DW8XL, here are some of the things I like and don't like about it: Pro: -Standard bearers and other unique unit types add variety to a genre that desperately needs it and make killing trash mobs more fun and engaging -Maps are huge, hitting 1000+ kills in a battle is the minimum anymore rather than being a goal of some sort -In addition to maps being huge, Triangle/Y on the controller is now a dash attack rather than just a special, lets you travel very fast AND kill trash mobs at the same time -Just like DW8XL you can pick 2+ different characters per scenario, except now you don't have to actually pick playing solo you get both and can swap between them mid game on the fly -What used to be a neutral Triangle/Y tap on SOME characters in DW8XL and other earlier Musou games, a buff for your character mid fight, is now an R1 button press to get a buff for ALL characters (EDIT: After playing a little more of the game, I've found out many characters also have power-up combos you can do by holding R1 and pressing XX or YY. They do various things like powering up weapons power, giving your character extra movespeed, giving a defensive shield/barrier, or leaving proximity/time based traps) -Map system has never been clearer and easier to follow to an objective. Objectives are also color coded per playable character as well, so two characters can be doing two different objectives simultaneously now, very cool imo -Create a character and a unique storyline just for your custom character, very cool -Online CO-OP AND Split Screen! Con: -Unfortunately characters no longer have 4-5 total different musou gauge burn variations like in DW8XL, now everyone has 3 total -Standard bearer unit placement sometimes makes little sense, being put in unaccessable areas, out of line of sight, or occasionally even completely across the map for the unit they're buffing. Very annoying having to sometimes run past multiple named characters looking for a guy with a flag buffing people he can't see and is nowhere near (rare but happens) -In game shop to buff and buy new weapons is locked at first for some reason, and it's not very obvious to veterans of the genre imo -Can't put whatever weapon you want on any character like in DW8XL, every character only has 1 weapon no swapping with R1 since that's a buff now -Objectives sometimes fail for no reason because they're designed/programmed poorly. Second player AI can be awful sometimes, for instance luring enemies into ambush objectives is nearly impossible, one of your 2 characters will always automatically run at them full time knocking them down/back and away from the area you're luring them to. Creates the need to do an annoying back and forth quick swapping where you're making inches of progress at a time fighting against friendly character AI Overall I still recommend DW8XL as the ultimate Musou game but if you're looking for something to play after that, this is that game with less depth but better graphics and some QoL upgrades for an extra 15$, not too bad imo

An honestly really great re-release of Samurai Warriors 4. Great Storylines, characters, gameplay and weapon diversity. Thoroughly enjoying each of the campaigns and the narration method of explaining the historical events. The only negative item i have to share is that this is just the base game, it doesn't include anything from the follow-up 4-II. As a result it's missing characters like Naomasa Li and their storyline.

This is a great port! And it has all(most?) of the DLC's! I definitely recommend it! I only wish KT would go back and update some of their older ports released in the last 10 or so years to bring them to this level(Maybe DX-ify DW8 and DW8 Empires too). Here's to hoping for more older ports making it to PC(I wish for Warriors Orochi Z, please)!

Samurai Warriors (SW) 4 DX is the definitive version of the game with all previously released DLCs included in the package. It's a fairly decent PC port that runs pretty well and includes the A and B button swap (for confirmation action on Western and Japanese release) that's usually missing in older Koei-Tecmo ports. One annoying thing about the port is that it doesn't have a borderless window mode and this is one game that will require ALT-TABing often to look up guides. Now, this wouldn't be an issue if ALT-TAB didn't somehow prevent Steam Overlay from working, but unfortunately, it does and is pretty annoying. In terms of gameplay, its combat is clearly differentiated from the Dynasty Warriors (DW) series with the addition of hyper attacks where you can string together strong attacks for combos - it starts with a dash and is used primarily for crowd clearing; due to this addition, the combat action is a lot more fast-paced. SW4DX's combat is also more advanced than the vanilla musou titles yet it still manages to keep the controls simple. You can parry with a just guard for a counter attack and sidestep; using the spirit charge gauge, you can also cancel attacks, break opponent's guard and escape from juggles. I think in terms of combat mechanics across all Koei musou game's I've played, I like this one the most - it's basically some of the weapon type mechanics in DW8 being normalized with polish and additions. You also have 20 slots to create custom characters, which I've found to be really fun. You also have the freedom to re-edit your characters so nothing is locked-in, making it possible to progressive refine your character looks. Musou cinematics switches camera focus to your controlled character and makes it really enjoyable to see how your custom character turned out. One rather disappointing aspect of the game for me though was the lack of the ability to fuse/craft weapons which prevents making the weapon of your choice with the desired elements - it's a big deal because it's too difficult to net a suitable weapon and the rare/DLC weapons are a tad too OP. The story campaign is organized by clans and it tells the stories from their angle, with the Sanada clan (which Yukimura, the series' poster boy, belongs to) being somewhat of a focus. Chronologically, it can get somewhat confusing depending on how familiar you are with the events of Japan's Sengoku Period, which I wasn't and hadn't played earlier SW titles. The story's good as far as Koei musou games go; Sanada's story, especially, is well presented. I just wished they had swapped "Twin Cherry Blossoms" and the more solemn "Petals in the Wind" for Osaka Campaign (Toyotomi) when it's time for Yukimura to do his final charge. As for other game modes, there's the Chronicle Mode for unlocking custom character equipment parts where you play primarily as a custom character of your creation. It's a decent game mode but gets repetitive pretty fast. Nevertheless, you can easily create a new character within the mode and swap around custom characters, making it really fun to make new ones. This is a Koei musou title and ever since DW2, they've always had banger OSTs. Unfortunately, this one falls a little short for me - it didn't include BGMs in the older titles in the series, unlike the trend in newer DW titles. It's still a solid OST with my favourites being "Beginning" (especially this one), "Petals in the Wind" (both versions), "Whirlwind", "Raging Waves" and "Twin Cherry Blossoms"; while not being the most comprehensive, it's become one of my favourite musou OST. It's sad that neither the SW1/2/3 version of "Osaka Castle" is included, only "Osaka Castle (Redux)" as part of DLC (which isn't nearly as good imo); nor any version of the upbeat "Komaki-Nagakute" theme. Performance-wise, it's mostly good. It loads up quickly on HDD and runs smoothly for the most part during gameplay (on my R7 2700X + GTX 1060 6GB at highest settings) with some occasional frame rate drops which are quite trivial. There are occasional audio cut-offs during cutscenes but are pretty minor and doesn't destroy the experience. And, having upgraded recently to an R7 7700 + RTX 4060, I've not encountered any such issues. It's a fun game and I do strongly recommend the game. However, I'd suggest waiting out for a huge sale because it's an old title that is, to put it bluntly, overpriced. Bought the game when it was on 30% off but I wished I had held out for a 50% considering some of my earlier stated points. Regardless, this is shaping up to be my favourite musou title thanks to its combat and presentation. In terms of gameplay offerings, it may be somewhat limited; but it does very well in most of what it offers. PSA: Leave Legend of Sanada to the last when clearing Story mode - save the best for last. And be somewhat gentle with the button mashing, musou games tend to break your controller face buttons really fast. ;)

Some people play Candy Crush, some people play Angry Birds, but Musou games are my comfort food when I just want something to play. I played Samurai Warriors 5 on console as my first game in the series... and I didn't really like it. It just felt lacking in so many ways. Only afterwards did I learn over half of the characters had been cut and the game was massively downsized. Sure Samurai Warriors 5 is significantly better at telling the story of the Warring States period, but that came at a cost of gameplay and longevity, 2 things Samurai Warriors 4 does significantly better. I don't know why Koei finds it so hard to make a Musou game that has a competently told story AND good gameplay... they've proven they can do both individually. Just freaking make Dynasty Warriors 7/Samurai Warriors 5 in presentation, but a combination of Dynasty Warriors 5/Samurai Warriors 4 in gameplay! It is the same story every time, it shouldn't be this hard! D: Hire me and I'll do it for you. lol
