At first, I was really skeptical of this one. They removed a lot of the features of the previous game (Shiren: Tower Of Fortune) and didn't seem to add any new ones, other than quality of life stuff. But it's only after playing a fair bit that it's apparent: it really is the better game. The stuff they removed - particularly the Night mechanic - wasn't making the game more fun. And the quality of life stuff is really significant.
A very solid and well polished JRPG traditional roguelike mystery dungeon game. While it still has a lot of elements from archaic game design like hidden traps and heavy RNG, the smoothness of the interface, control scheme, and general polish already puts this close to the top of the list in terms of accessibility. While something like Brogue or The Ground Gives Way may be more tactical experiences, Shiren 6 at least offers a better on-ramp to that ecosystem of games without having to remember if an F is a fox or a fire dragon. I think a lot of people that grew up with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon coming to this are going to get a severe beating and not like the game as a result. Those who played Shiren-specific entries will find a lot to like here. In fact, fans of heavy RNG permadeath roguelike games will also find a lot to like. The game plays great on the steam deck, and people LOVE this game on Android at the very least. I figure the 'mixed' rating from recent reviews are from people buying the game on discount due to the charming graphics, getting bludgeoned over the head by the game's difficulty, and not understanding that failure in Shiren is necessary sometimes. Learning the game's systems, knowing when to send items back to the main campaign start, and building a "metaprogression" engine that way are key to success for this kind of game.
Shiren 6 is a phenomenal roguelike. At the surface, it doesn't look like much when you first start playing (and the lack of trailers and screenshots on the storefront doesn't help). It gives you contextual tutorials whenever you encounter something new, but otherwise you're pretty much on your own. It truly tests your wits — the more you play, the smarter you get. With 100+ hours clocked in, I can confidently say this is the complete opposite of a barebones roguelike. When you finish the game for the first time — clearing the first 31 floors and defeating the boss — it's a great sign that you're ready for the difficulty spikes ahead. The world of Serpentcoil Island expands gradually from there, with more dungeons to explore, more items to collect and use, and so much more.
Shiren 6 is a wonderful game and an incredible introduction to the Shiren series even for newcomers, and with some of the best quality of life I've seen in a game like this. Cutting away a lot of extraneous mechanics from Shiren 5 (night, etc) and putting more of a focus on runs where you dont get to bring items in with you make it feel a lot like the original Shiren, in a sense. If you've got any interest in mystery dungeon or roguelikes I think it's well worth it!
