I love this game; almost 25 years since I first played it, I still find myself coming back to it multiple times a year. It's deeply flawed- the balance between different units and leader traits is terrible, the AI blatantly cheats, all sorts of now-standard QoL elements are missing (why is Joao always "Annoyed" with you? The interface won't tell you, and it doesn't matter because all of the AI can and will declare war at random). None of that detracts from this being the only Civ game where it feels like a dynamic, living world, with real empires and massive battles, without being bogged down in so many options and mechanics that late-game turns take an hour each. I wish there was an option to just observe the AI play entire maps against itself- it does a better job colonizing land and keeping matches lively than any 4x opponent before or since. It's also like two bucks on sale, so just buy it if you have any interest at all in the genre and haven't experienced it before.

It's just like I remember it. There are some things you need to fix before playing this game, sadly. Resolution is wrong for modern systems. 1. Browse the game local files. 2. Find the folder Conquests and open it. 3. Find the file named conquest.ini and open it with notepad. 4. Add KeepRes=1 at the bottom of the file and save. 5. Start the game and enjoy normal resolution Into movie is kinda broken. 1. Find the file named conquest.ini from before and open it with notepad. 2. Add PlayIntro=0 at the bottom of the file and save. 3. Start the game. Now the Intro won't be playing. When you open diplomacy, there is a sound bug. 1. Go to https://www.indirectsound.com/ 2. Download the file and browse the game local files. 3. Find the folder Conquests and open it. 4. Extract the dsound.ini and dsound.dll into the Conquests folder. 5. Start the game and the sound bug is now fixed. Enjoy the full experience with this old great classic game on modern systems.

People call civ 4 the ultimate classic civ, but honestly, civ 4 is more of a weird inbetween than it is a true classic game (which IS why it's the best one) This however, is probably the best true classic civ game. CIV 1 and 2 are really fucking old and dont really even run on modern systems, and their UI is nightmarishly old. this game was the first one to have a functional UI, and somehow, is still better than civ 7's on launch despite being from 2001. it's also extremely moddable.

This is the peak of Civilization, I say this as a completely unbiased person. We have MILF Montezuma and GI Jeanne d'Arc, stacks of 20 spearmen treading through nuclear waste, railroad spaghetti so good it'll make your toes curl, man's first interpretation of facial micro- sorry, macro-expressions, ... This game is the meme that keeps on giving and I will forever cherish it. ♥️ It's also legitimately fun to play, not just funny. I found Civ 6 so bloated and busy with its many menus and DLCs that it sort of turned me off. I was surprised to return to this fossil of a game and then have more fun with it overall. Civ 3 also has a couple of features that aren't in the series anymore, like having a city view, designing your palace, the civ leaders and your advisors having a wardrobe update every era, ... it has spirit, it's a vibe.

Civilization 3 was and is, by far, the best Civ game ever. I do not understand how Sid Meier could deviate from the concepts, GUI, look-and-feel, etc., of this great game. Civ4 started to deviate by removing the 'defensive' stats of units, diplomacy seemed much more limited, and the graphical design was very bad with the 'giant units.' I won’t even mention Civ 5, which I played for maybe 30 seconds before immediately uninstalling: Civ 5 is an insult to the Civ lineage. Civ 6 I played for a few hours, but it just feels painful—it’s as if they deliberately threw away all the great ideas in Civ3. Combats, for example, which were always central to Civ, are now almost nonsensical to me. First, it is nonsensical and a pain to remove unit stacking. 'Ghost' garrisons that 'magically' exist in new cities are just nonsense. Unit movement points causing units to 'wait' until the next turn to move to hills or similar terrain is just a pain—all the excitement of combat in Civ 3 was removed. Diplomacy feels 'pre-defined' and dull compared to Civ3. And the interface is catastrophic compared to Civ3—the wonderful and very practical advisors's screen where you could see all your cities (and citizens' heads!) and all your units (per city or per unit), etc., are gone and replaced by useless and awkward elements. Wonders don’t feel like wonders. Shields are gone. We no longer have the 'feeling' of the process of building and accumulating shields. New 'features' like the 'civics tree,' districts, and other additions are merely minor and unnecessary complications that don't add any real value... I could go on for a while. I really beg Sid Meier to reconsider Civ3, which is objectively a wonder of the world. I am sick of people thinking that they need to change things just for the sake of change—even things that worked well! Keep the things that work. There are, however, many minor changes and improvements (e.g., new units, some details or 'bugs' in the diplomacy, etc.) that can be addressed. But 'change for change’s sake' is simply equivalent to stupidity and generally leads to very unsatisfactory outcomes. In the culinary world, you don't improve a recipe by randomly changing all the ingredients. Please, Sid Meier, if you read this: It’s time to revive and continue a 'true' Civilization lineage that fully embraces and builds upon the core principles that made Civ3 an unparalleled masterpiece. P.S. Please note that I have been playing Civ 3 since it was released around 2001-2002, and I still play it today. Before that, I played Civ 2, which was a fantastic game as well, though I must admit that Civ 2 now feels a bit "dated" to me. Civ 3, however, still doesn't feel like an old game, even here in 2024, which is solid proof of its enduring greatness.
