a curious comparasion to civ6. Many mechanics present a more desision rich gameplay, and many of those desicions are so much more flavourfull. take civics. In civ4 you have a dilema of abandoning slavery, pushing harder on military control etc etc. It aint perfect, but in comparasion to civ6's civics it kinda is. What happens when you get 50% on making builders? +5 power when fighting barbarians? Its a mechanic sure, and its fun in its own right, but the flavour is board game, not civilization strategy. The combat is where it shines the most. Civ 4 - you're thinking where along your wide border should you take your army and strike, how much garrison should you leave to hold the city while you try to continue your campaign. Watching out for the sneaky enemy squad slipping past you and striking your weakspot. It AINT perfect! You can do so much more, lean so much harder into it, but... In civ6 youre mostly concerned with moving your carpet of pieces through a bottle neck, or spreading them round a city and throwing them into its walls, trying to het its health bar down while the unoccupied city is doing a ranged attack on one of your units every turn. On a micro level too. Civ4 - enemy's on a hill, hard to attack. Civ6 - enemy has a bonus +10 power when fighting units of civs in golden ages , hard to attack. You know what i mean? The expansion i like better too. The cities grow fast, and you end up in a position where the borders are established so much quicker then in civ6. You're making decisions! What resourses should i prioritise, what land do i mark as my own, should i start a war with this guy invading my territory? In civ6 you're building districts. Which is fine, if you like it, but oh, the flavour! that being said, i never finished a game lol. Couldn't get that invested. The graphics are ugly. A cool experiense though
best civ game ever,would definitely recommend to all others that enjoy civ and turned based games,currently trying to get a long term co-op game going,full scale wars against a.i.no short and easy games here lol message on steam or can jump in if you see an open spot in game,can also message me on xbox im using same name
I wasn't expecting much from a Civilization game from 2005, but I was surprised to find this to be actually really fun and enjoyable. Great gameplay, great soundtrack, just a great game. The graphics are a little dated but I personally don't mind them much. The UI is a little older too but it's fine. Overall, it's a really good game and I'm glad I got it for dirt cheap on sale.
