A compelling sense of mounting dread and great use of a singular location star here, alongside the titular Skinfreak, in a game that cements Torture Star as the king of indie B-horror, and Black Eyed Priest as one of the best developers carrying that mantle. These games have always been small, scrappy, brutish, ugly, and proud of it, and Skinfreak continues that tradition in much the same way as previous titles. But it's done with the flair and confidence of people who have spent years honing the art of interactive exploitation. You already know whether or not you like these sort of games, and if you do then I'd say Skinfreak is a great showing of everything you crave. The environments are jagged and polygonal. Vibrant colors bleed out of light sources like Argento's own blood. Death comes loud and violent. And in the absence of death, there is only silence, the buzz of fluorescent lights, and a parade of vaguely farcical obstacles to your character's goal. The atmosphere is thick, the scares are jarring, the puzzles tickle your brain, the characters turn your stomach, and the story keeps you interested enough to press on through the ever-present threat of loud jumpscares and horrifying face textures. An absolute top-tier piece of trash, and a great way to spend an October evening.

BEP always has great games that scratch that corny 80's horror low poly itch. It's a fun, simple puzzle game with cool atmosphere. My biggest complaint with this one is the saves. It's pretty pointless to ration them out by the hour, and the tension at the very end is spoiled trying to get away from the killer because the dialogue is between awkward, clunky chases. It sends you aaaall the way back to the beginning of the cutscene when you die and it's obnoxious. Aside from that very annoying bit, I think it's a fun time for halloween.

TL;DR - This is an adventure game, that happens to have a horror atmosphere and story. I mean this in a very positive way: This game is just a fun stupid game. The game, setup, and execution are cheesy and it is fully embraced. I got some laughs out of it. The scares are actually humorous themselves. This is by no means some mind blowing experience, but I enjoyed it and got a kick out of it. I recommend if you're looking for a silly game to kill an evening on. GRAPHICS: The pixelated PS1 era graphics are enjoyable, in my opinion. It adds to the cheesyness. Overall the aesthetic is done well. It's not incredible, but it's not bad by any means. Check the screenshots - what you see is what you get. SOUND: Sound design is solid. It isn't God's gift to mankind, but it does it's job fine. GAMEPLAY: This is where I will have a few complaints. First and foremost, know that this is an adventure game with a horror story. There is VERY minimal survival horror aspects to the game. It's finding items that work together to complete tasks to further your objectives. There are some minor upgrades you can get: speed and inventory space. This leads to my first complaint. They limit your inventory in the game, specifically at the start of the game. If you don't do things right, you will have to drop items and recollect them later, which is QUITE tedious. On a positive note, there is a room you can use to grab items within the building regardless of where it is. Next issue is speed. You start the game EXCRUCIATINGLY slow. You can get upgrades to it to make it bearable, but the slowness can hurt a lot, especially if you get stuck and need to backtrack...or go long distances. Speaking of slowness, the game itself is quite slow. Overall performance is fine, but entering other rooms, can just add up time to an annoying level, especially when traveling on the elevator. In certain spots if you die, you have to go back to the main menu then reload your game - which takes a significant amount of time. That all being said, these things didn't ruin the game for me, just annoyed me. STORY: It's there. It doesn't do anything new or exciting. I don't even know if I'd say it's good. It just exists, but it did make me laugh and I enjoyed the silliness of it all. It's all stupid in my favorite way. IN CONCLUSION: I recommend if you're looking for a game that is stupid, yet fun to go through. It only takes a few hours to finish. You can tell the devs enjoyed what they were doing with this game, there is a surprising amount of detail paid to small things throughout the game, which I greatly appreciated. I've spent more money on worse things, and for a cheesy horror game around halloween - it hit the right spots for me.
