Remarkably very deep and somewhat complex game. Updates tend to be a bit long in between due to the small size of the development studio, but they are high quality updates that add good content. Definitely a buy.

This game is tough. It's not handholding at all. It doesn't really tell you what to do and it only tells roughly how to do it. But when you are patient enough to get into it, then it's beautiful and brilliant.

Had this on my radar for awhile, and picked it up during Steam sale. Love the concept. It's good so far, but it's still quite rough in a few areas particularly in regards to QOL and UI issues. The English localization needs some work particularly in terms of labeling. The UI is just not good, but I understand that is getting an overhaul in the next major update. I would love to see an in-game wiki or recipe book. As it is, it is hard to figure out what you need to buy to build things, or how to manufacture something without hovering over each building. Developer should take a look at Captain of Industry. The item production chain guide in that game is fantastic. I would like to have the ability to permanently toggle off the roofs of buildings, it is very awkward when trying to build to have the roof reappear. Also click and drag to lay down building blocks would be great, as one by one click gets very tedious. Overall though, I definitely see potential for long term replayability. Active updates seem to be ongoing so that is good. Would definitely recommend with the caveat that it is obviously still in early access with all that entails.

I've had my eyes on this game for a while now and finally bought it. It has a lot of potential but also some glaring issues with figuring out how to do certain things. Overall I give this a 6/10. Worth it but I really hope they make it a little easier to figure out. Granted at the time of writing this the game is in very early access so it's not surprising it has issues. What I Liked [*]The music is amazingly good [*]The sheer scale of the game is enormous. You can build on multiple planets and moons, it's massive [*]Tutorial windows cover the essentials What I Didn't Like [*]I couldn't figure out how to put equipment in a room when I built the first room. I got the airlock and walls up and stairs on the outside, but when I select the room and click on the very tiny Equipment button on the right, it shows me nothing can be built. I got a little frustrated here at first because it took me forever to find the Equipment button because it was very tiny and out of the way compared to the Construction commands, and then when you find it you can't build anything. [*]Camera controls with your mouse feel really janky when you are on a planet. It zips around really fast compared to in space and you can't go up/down very much when on the planet view. [*]Tutorials are 100% text based and could be done better. They rely on you seeing exactly what they are talking about without highlighting anything or making things stand out so you need to be very focused to figure some things out...like it taking me 10 minutes to find the Equipment button. [*]After playing for a bit and getting stuck on how to do things I had to bail on the game and go hunting through youtube for videos of how people have been doing things just to progress. Kinda frustrating, would be ideal if the game makes it easier to understand how to do certain things. What I Neutral About [*]Graphics are good but not fantastic. I was expecting them to be much worse to be honest, so to me they are good. [*]While the graphics and music were pretty good, the UI feels very basic and could use alot of work

TL;DR Very mixed / limited recommendation - the game is amazing in some parts, but the biggest problem is the UI which is impressively bad. You can have fun with this game if you really want to play it now, and i don't know any other game that compares at all to Solargene, but it may be better to wait for it to improve first. My first impression was being completely blown away. I expected a cool looking, but in the end disappointingly shallow colony sim. My bar for physical accuracy and depth in scifi games is pretty dang high to be fair, which is why most games can't meet what i want - but surprisingly, i was not disappointed here. You have mining with resources depending on the planetary body and densities varying depending on where exactly you build a base, complex crafting chains, needing to tend to colonists' needs, interplanetary logistics - it's kind of everything i wanted. More than i hoped for. If you like me look at the screenshots and immediately start salivating - yes, that's exactly what the game is. With that said, it's certainly not perfect. The UI is pretty atrocious in particular, having the information you want on display is a fight and really you can't have much information available at a glance no matter what you do. I'm pretty sure you simply cannot manually rearrange windows, so all you can do is choose to minimize some but not others. It doesn't take a lot of open windows before some important info like your stored materials (arguably one of the most important info for an outpost) is completely invisible, because it's reduced to a tiny window with a scroll bar. Literally the info you need most gets treated as if it's one of the least important ones. Yikes! Be prepared to have to manage windows and/or scroll literally every time you need to check if you have resources for something. And it's generally just very difficult figuring out where you can build what, how you make certain materials, how fast your research speed is going to be etc. You'll have to just figure these things out, the first few hours are not fun because of this. A lot of the time, you literally cannot even see the name of an object! Once again, it's impressively bad. It's also otherwise not problem free, research sometimes just stops for no reason. Exiting the research screen for some reason freezes the game for a few seconds. Nothing too major so far, and any issues like this that i encountered honestly are barely worth mentioning given the UI elephant in the habitat. I'm also not too far into the game to be fair, still just working on a lunar outpost. But i think i've seen enough to know where things are heading. The one good news is that the dev is aware of the UI being atrocious, and a redesign is planned for the future. Generally it looks like the game is in fact being actively worked on and the dev cares, which is good to see - this looks like a genuine good use of Early Access from what i can tell. Still, this review talks about what the game is right now, not what it might one day be. And with that, i can only really recommend it for hardcore scifi fans that are willing to deal with a really bad UI. There is a diamond in the rough here, but it's one of the roughest diamonds you'll ever see. And even if you are in the target audience and very excited for this game, like me, you may be better off waiting for said update and hopefully you'll be able to have a much more pleasant experience. And to the dev - keep it up! I really really *really* want to see this game get more user friendly and otherwise to a place where i can wholeheartedly recommend it, because what i can see of this game now it absolutely has potential to be by far the best game in its niche, and i'm very excited.
