TLDR; I think it has a great loop even though personally it takes too long for a run to finish. I spent way too much time playing this game. I stopped close to achieving the true end a few months ago and finally jumped back in to close the chapter once and for all. I got very disappointed with the ending and felt happy that I am free instead. I did not try the harder difficulties because it effectively nerfs a disable mechanic, and I do not want to waste half a day just losing the run. I have unlocked most of everything important by the 4th or 5th run because the base progression is not very useful, equipment unlocks add unnecessary clutter to RNG while you can unlock 1 or 2 characters per run. In the beginning you will unlock some of them as you recruit them but later on it becomes a relationship meter mechanic, essentially offspring and variations. In order to do that, sometimes you have to use characters that are pretty useless until you get the appropriate equipment. As with any game of this genre, there is a meta and it is often empowered even further by RNG equipment drops. One of the characters can essentially grant everyone immortality while healing to full after every fight. This ability can be triggered every turn provided you can accumulate enough resources during the battle. Later on, the character can even heal mid battle. Needless to say, most of my runs are centered around this character once available. There's a small pool of bosses and traits that you can inspect, but all of them are pointless against the immortality-granting tank. The game somehow devolved into setting up the following scenario with the current selection of characters : collect resources for immortal skill, take out enemies one by one, ensure tank does not die. However, I still failed runs because I got too greedy with character unlocks and the enemy just out-dps my resource collection. My final run did not have the immortal tank due to a requirement for the true ending, but the battle design is good enough that it was still somewhat of a comfortable win, albeit a bit slow and tiresome. I would have enjoyed this game more if things move faster, even at 50+ hours in, I don't think I have even done 15 runs. Average run is around 4-5 hours each, some faster due to failure. I would recommend this game if you have the time or do not intend to chase the true ending (it is not worth it anyway).
An enjoyable turn-based roguelike in the vein of Darkest Dungeon. + Perfect information - no RNG + Intuitive turn-based combat system based on denying the enemy turns, a la Metaphor: Re Fantazio or the Fuga: Melodies of Steel series + Affinity system that gives you cutscenes between party members and rewards you with alternate appearances and movesets - Runs take a very long time (2 hours +) and the incremental improvements that persist between runs are not as significant as I prefer - Irreverent tone can detract from the story. Think Borderlands. - Indie title; no voice acting, and occasional bugs requiring hard rebooting the game and loading the last auto-save. For the price, very much worth a look if you are a fan of the genre. 8/10
This game is so very slept on. I go back to it again and again and always enjoy it. The battles are engaging and the stakes are always high, and every decision you make can and will affect your run. The characters are cool, the effects are fun, the story is cool, and the worldbuilding is actually breathtaking. I do wish that the character banter matched the energy of these things. Often you will interact with something in the environment and get a goofy, almost fourth wall breaking, piece of dialogue that pulls you out of how awesome this game's world is. As for the world, think Star Wars + cyberpunk (The tech and aesthetic, not the game). It's a roguelite JRPG. A run lasts about 2-3 hours. There is some meta progression, but nothing super game breaking. The balance of the game almost requires you to have amazing builds to win a run, so you'll definitely need to learn the game and most likely won't win your first run. My take, if you like JRPGs, Roguelites, Star Wars, or cyberpunk... you should pick this game up. And definitely if it's on a sale. At the time of writing this, It's on sale for less than $5, and I have over 270 hours in game. Well worth that price.
Short review after doing the game on 3 runs (finished extreme): a rogue-lite multi run turn based RPG with a classic side view battle system. Pros: - Decent pixel art style both for the environments and characters - Main attraction of the game are the multiple rogue-lite runs you will do, after you complete the campaign you can start again at a higher difficulty. This is not a normal new game plus like in other RPG as here all of the game systems support this (you unlock new characters, one new area and boss, weapons/items, perks, progression system, skills per run that you can use in your new runs) - Great turn based combat system utilizing a break, critical and stagger system (certain attacks break enemy characters which means they forfeit their turn, critical attacks get extra damage and abilities and stagger delays the enemy attacks, using these systems is beneficial and mandatory in later runs) - Decent amount of enemies and bosses (you will not be fighting many per run, about 100 however all of the fights are strategic and long) - Good weapon/itemization system allowing for many builds Cons: - Lackluster main story and barely and side content - Too few different regions makes multiple runs fell the same, not enough variety - The path system of your party in the world areas is broken and dumb For a classic turn based RPG fan this game will not do much because of its poor story, side content and world exploration however for a turn based battle and rogue-lite fan this game will tick all the right boxes because there are not many of these kind of games out there so i can recommend this game to them.
