This is the first game that's hooked me since last August. I originally didn't buy it because it doesn't have controller support, but I got a mouse for my Steam Deck so I can try some new things. Stray Path didn't immediately appeal to me—perhaps because I'm not a cat person—but it went on sale yesterday so it felt like time to give it a go. I think the game's biggest strength is its simplicity. You click to attack and the enemy retaliates if it can. You can inflict status effects, but enemies can do worse to you. You grow your stats when you find blessing alters, you get extra bonuses for clearing out stages, you collect rune stones to upgrade relics you find, and the relics are really the key to surviving a run. It took about an hour to beat for the first time on easy mode, which is about twice as fast as it usually takes. That's not to say the game doesn't pose a challenge, but that I figured out ways to exploit it almost immediately. My job involves finding exploits in systems, so I'm kind of tuned into this sort of thing every day. It does pose a unique challenge, compared to other games I've played, and I didn't feel like it was too easy—just really easy to understand. Most games take me twice as long because I don't understand how they work. I would've finished on my second run had I managed to understand why one enemy kept killing me when it didn't advertise it would. So, this is where my complaints come in. I don't understand how certain things work in the game, and I'm not sure if they're supposed to work how they do. There's one enemy in the fourth location that would basically insta-kill me if I attacked it and it had the opportunity to retaliate. Nothing on the card indicated it would do this, so I still don't understand why this happened, but I just followed a lot of cursed paths to get rare relics that generate a ton of items after one kill, used those to weaken the enemy with indirect damage, and then finished it off with a standard attack. So, in a way, it was kind of fun trying to figure out how to beat an enemy that didn't act the way its card said it would, but I think I'd still prefer things to work according to the stated rules. Also, I've unlocked most of the emblem equipped slots, but only one emblem. I've unlocked absolutely nothing else in any category, and I don't know what I'm supposed to do to unlock these things. You'd think that beating the game, even on easy mode, would unlock at least one thing but no. It's possible that the unlock conditions are somewhere in the bestiary, but I haven't gone searching for them yet. It's really weird to me that the locked slots tell you what you're going to unlock rather than the condition for unlocking it. I would much rather be surprised by the reward then not know how to gain the reward. All of my complaints about Stray Path have to do with missing information. I'm sure there are a few things I just missed because I sometimes rush my way through things and often ignore instructions in favor of just figuring out how to play on my own, but Stray Path has an unusually good and short tutorial, and you're forced to do it properly, so I actually paid attention. I'm going to just look up how some of these things work, but I don't think a game should put you in a position where you have to go elsewhere for information that could be easily provided in the game. All of that said, this is a really fun game. I realize I complained about issues than I complimented the game, but I really enjoyed it and want to play it more, but I'm getting tripped up because of the issues. But to even things out I'm going to try and articulate the good stuff (besides how easy it is to learn). I think one of the things I really liked was the amount of control the game provides you. While your options dwindle as you go on, for half the run you pretty much have the ability to choose the paths that contain what you need as you proceed to the next stage. If you need rune stones, you can choose rune stones. If you have at least five rune stones, you can safely choose the relic upgrade path and not miss out on anything. The game doesn't give you a ton of relics right away, so they're easy to manage and keep upgraded. You don't have to make any hard choices right away as you figure out your approach to the game based on what you find. I really like this. Wildfrost, which is my favorite, does not do you any favors like this and it's my one complaint about the game. I spent a year breaking that game completely, so I don't ever lose, but some runs are just annoying because the RNG isn't balanced. Stray Path does a great job of giving you the opportunity to always find what you need without too much trouble, and it's your mistake if you don't make the best of it. I appreciate this a lot, because you never feel like it's preventing you from enjoying your run. As with most roguelike/roguelite games, it's the artifacts/relics/bonuses/upgrades/etc., and the synergies you can create between them, that makes them fun. Stray Path allows for some really interesting synergies. Earlier, I mentioned the card generator relics. These are fairly easy to get if you follow enough cursed paths and/or can afford rare chests. Items aren't always very useful, but lots of items exploit the game in a fun way. As soon as you have your first kill, if you have three upgraded item-generating relics, six cards just get spammed out and cover up enemies. So, you not only get lots of helpful stuff to use, but you can pick off enemies solo more easily. In the later stages, this is super useful because enemies synergize with each other. You can also exploit relic abilities in fun ways. There's one, whose name I forget, that stacks damage on items in your inventory every time you attack or use an item. Leave a bomb in your inventory for several stage and you can one shot every boss (except for the final one, though this tactic is still very useful in that fight). So, if this kind of stuff appeals to you, you'll probably enjoy Stray Path. I just wish I could figure out how to increase the difficulty and unlock more things. :-P There's so much more game I can't play without knowing that... ***** UPDATE: I am an idiot. Unlocks happen in the beastiary and there's a giant arrow with text that says "UNLOCK" bouncing up and down on the main screen. I have an unusual talent for looking everywhere something is not. So, I my complaint about that is not valid. :-p
