I think Dragonwilds is a solid early access title, but it still has a ways to go in a lot of areas. They continue to release new content at a fairly solid pace. The game does not feel janky (for the most part) or buggy, which is a pleasant surprise when compared to most other early access titles in this or similar genres. Dragonwilds is very heavy on resource management. I don't think this game is particularly more similar to Valheim than any other game in the genre, but if I were to pick the closest similarity, it would be the resource gathering/processing/organizing gameplay loop. Like Valheim, the further you get into the game progression, the more you discover additional crafting materials. In my opinion, that is where the Valheim similarities end. Travel and fast travel, the "survival" aspect (hunger/thirst/sleep), combat, the leveling system, and the magic system all feel completely different. Some of those things still need to be worked on (melee combat and hunger/thirst). I would say where Dragonwilds sets itself apart the most is the rune/magic system; it is very unique, feels satisfying, and is necessary/useful in all aspects of the game, rather than just combat. Oh and reading a couple of the negative reviewers who think the combat is too difficult, I would advise you away from other games in the genre. Valheim is way more unforgiving even with it's melee combat feeling more polished. However, with Dragonwilds' parry mechanic being almost broken, melee combat relies heavily on dodging and is largely underpowered. But if you are correctly utilizing the armor system, magic (weapon enhancements), and consumables, even the melee combat (besides in main boss fights) is on the easier side when compared to other titles in this genre. For those who are thinking of trying Dragonwilds out because of Runescape/OSRS, the only similarities you'll see from those games are the rune based magic system, the skills, and some lore. Besides those things, the map is new, the NPCs are new (outside of some mentioned in the lore), and obviously it is a completely different type of game. So if you don't like the open-world survival craft genre, you probably won't like Dragonwilds just because of it's connections to Runescape. Also, just to note - the difficulty scales with the amount of people currently in the session. So if you have friends (rare) who you play with and you aren't all adventuring together, combat will be significantly more difficult if you're out fighting a direwolf alone while three friends are basebuilding than if you were fighting that direwolf alone while playing solo. So it's best to grab everyone who's in the session to go explore new biomes. Not really a positive or negative aspect, just something to keep in mind. Obligatory Pro/Con list: Pros: -Rune/magic system -Satisfying skill leveling/progression (still very much incomplete though) -Fast travel unlocked fairly early game -Surprisingly few bugs for an early access title -How quickly the developers are releasing content -Decent base building (and BB material/unlocks progression) -The graphics Cons: -Melee combat. Need to be able to animation cancel with dodge or something, and melee feels pointless during main boss battles -Hunger/thirst/sleep system. It's not that bad, it just feels like they slapped on a generic system so it could be considered a "survival" game -Lack of enemy diversity. For example, each new biome has a new type of rat. It gets to the point of being almost comical. There is also a demon mini boss in every biome, and each new biome they basically add a new attack or ability to it. In conclusion, Dragonwilds plays like a complete game; although content wise, it is still obviously early access. It's carved out a place for itself in the genre, even if just by its unique magic system and runescape style leveling system. There are still some mechanics they need to work on, but overall I would definitely recommend Dragonwilds if you are a fan of the open-world survival craft genre in a fantasy setting.

This completely blindsided me. Not just as a game, but as something I got to properly share with my son. We jumped in thinking we knew what we were doing. We absolutely did not. Those early hours were brutal in the best way. Every creature felt deadly. We were always hungry & thirsty, under-geared, constantly lost and getting wiped by basically anything we came across. But that struggle is what made it special. Sitting there side by side, laughing at how bad we were, dying, resetting and trying again. It genuinely felt like the start of a real adventure. Slowly things started to click. We found our rhythm. Learned when to fight, when to run, how to prep properly and actually survive instead of just reacting. Watching my son go from panicking at everything to confidently calling out plans, locations and ideas was insanely rewarding. The game doesn’t hold your hand, and because of that every bit of progress feels earned. We pushed deep into the world, eventually completing the dragon slayer quest - adventuring across the treacherous Fellhollow and making sure we unlocked everything we possibly could. Quests big and small, exploration, vaults. It all felt meaningful and worth doing. The world constantly rewards curiosity and there was always something pulling us forward. Then came the moment I’ll never forget. My son, who’s still very young, managed to defeat the mighty Imaru with me on our second attempt. The final boss mechanics in the current expansion are genuinely excellent. It reminded me a lot of early Destiny. Cleansing ourselves of the soul rifting, swapping between realms to stun the boss so the instant wipe mechanic didn’t delete the run, then making the most of the damage phases when they opened up. It demanded coordination, not just brute force. When we finally brought the dragon down, my son completely lost it. Pure excitement, yelling, laughing, unable to contain himself. One of those gaming moments you don’t forget. Something I’ll genuinely cherish. Looking at the roadmap and what’s still to come, here’s to many more experiences like this. I can’t recommend this game enough if you’re looking for a survival game that’s masterfully wound with the quirkiness of RuneScape, but built on a much more modern engine with huge potential. As a dad, this wasn’t just a great game. It was a shared adventure. 🤝

Really pleased with the content-focused direction and team growth that the devs have committed to. Roadmap is clear, realistic, robust and spans the entire upcoming year. The game will be in 1.0 by the end of 2026, which is great to see after the community expressed concerns that this game would flop. I'm writing this review as of the Felhollow update, which is its first major content release after launch. The vast majority of everything added expands on the game in a meaningful way. If the remaining three content updates are offering the same quantity and quality of content, this will be an absolute banger and definitely one to keep your eye on. The game is worth playing now, but if you'd rather wait until it's "done", you won't be waiting too long. If you like Valheim, you'll love this as they're quite similar. The main difference is that this game seems to be moving along much faster. Overall, a very welcome entry into the genre. Nothing ground-breaking, but it really doesn't have to be. This formula is still fun and doesn't need changing in my opinion.

I’m mostly a solo PC gamer, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds completely pulled me in. I never played classic RuneScape growing up, but this game made me understand the hype instantly. The progression feels earned, the world is dangerous in the right ways, and the building system is incredibly satisfying. You truly start from nothing and build yourself up piece by piece, and that sense of growth never gets old. I’m over 50 hours in and still having a blast. Exploration, combat, crafting, and base-building all work together in a way that keeps you hooked. It scratches that RPG itch in a way a lot of modern games miss. Honestly, it’s up there with the best RPGs I’ve played — and I’d even put it above Fable at this point. Can’t wait to see how much more they add.

My brother and I just put 70+ hours and went full completionist with this game, keep up the good work guys!! I'm personally an OSRS veteran who's been playing since 2006, but my brother approached the game from a fresh perspective, and we had a blast. The pacing is really so good. You never forget that it's a survival game, but you're never simply focused on just 'surviving'. It's quite goal-oriented (just as OSRS is), and the rewards we've received have felt not only deserved, but very fulfilling to achieve. You can feel your character becoming significantly stronger with each new armor/weapon tier, and it's incredibly satisfying to return with confidence to an area you once struggled with. Some of my biggest advice would be to unlock the personal chest (40 construction) as soon as possible and carry lodestone materials with you everywhere. Dying can be a bit tedious, and having quick teleports spread across the map can help reduce that inconvenience quite a bit. I think this game is severely underrated, and hope that it gets the love it deserves as more content continues to come out!
