Sunset Overdrive is an absolute head-banger of a game (literally, with its punk rock soundtrack). In my headspace, I imagine it to be Tony Hawk, but mixed with parkour and an absurd arsenal of weapons. The movement did initially feel slightly unfamiliar, especially given that it has been a while since I last played a Tony Hawk title. But once I got the hang of it, everything just clicked and fell in place. Grinding rails, vaulting over obstacles, air gliding and chaining together parkour moves became second nature and is in fact highly rewarded in this game. All whilst shooting and killing ‘zombies’ (they’re called ODs here). Insomniac did a really great job here delivering a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s a lot of pop culture references, break the fourth wall type humour and curse words. If you enjoy Scott Pilgrim and its brand of gaming humour, you would definitely enjoy Sunset Overdrive. Also special props to the legendary and one and only Yuri Lowenthal (Spiderman, Persona 3, Persona 4) who delivered the voice lines of the male player character flawlessly. I played this game primarily on the Steam Deck and it ran surprisingly well. That said, it’s a battery hog. Some minor configuration tweaks can help optimise power usage, but keep a charger nearby just in case. Also, I recommend playing in 720p rather than the default 1080p - it noticeably improves aiming precision and overall visibility on the smaller screen. And if you’re going for the 100%, just be prepared for a lot of collectibles (like over 800+) that require a lot of traversal through urban landscapes and some deft footwork. Others might be a little on the grindy (pun intended) side - like levelling 20 weapons to max level. There are also achievements for racking up high scores in in-game challenges (the Buck National series of challenges). They aren't overly difficult, but can require a few tries to ‘git gud’. A pro-tip - invest in the Hairspray Bomb weapon with a Second Amendment mod - it absolutely shreds through crowds and helps in racking up the requires points needed for the high score. Overall, I enjoyed my time in Sunset Overdrive. It’s wild, stylish and has a lot of chaotic flair. Definitely a must-play if you’re in the mood for something energetic, irreverent, and uniquely kinetic.

It's essentially what Saints Row should have been! For me it is a hidden gem. It runs well on Steam Deck BTW

I love this game! Although the PC port is pretty buggy compared to console. There's fixes on the community page which require digging into the game files. It doesn't take long, it just isn't very convenient. I would highly recommend attempting these fixes before diving into the game. My first couple hours on PC were fine until I was hit with the "Corrupt File" error, which erased all of my progress on my save. Luckily, this happened pretty early on. If the game is on sale then go for it! Just beware of the issues.

It does in fact run on steamdeck. There's a weird error message when you first launch the game and one of the save files always says it's corrupted, but other than that I've been having no issues and a great time.

Absolutely amazing! It's a crime how unpopular this game is. The gameplay is a perfect mix of joy and relaxation, the performance is great, and the visuals/effects are stunning; this is the kind of game that I love. Plus, the game has plenty of different and creative weapons that feel so good; some are very addictive and make you want to keep killing monsters over and over again. The movement and grinding mechanics make the game incredibly fun and an absolute must-play for me.
