Super Woden GP, developed and published by ViJuDa, is a passionate tribute to the golden age of isometric racing games, capturing the spirit of 1990s arcade and console racers with a modern indie sensibility. It doesn’t try to compete with today’s ultra-realistic simulators—instead, it focuses on the immediacy and rhythm of fast-paced racing where quick reflexes, memorization, and instinct are everything. From the very first race, it becomes clear that this is a game designed for enthusiasts of old-school racing—those who grew up on titles like Micro Machines, Rally Cross, or Sega Rally—and who appreciate the purity of mastering a car from a fixed, elevated viewpoint rather than relying on physics realism or flashy presentation. Its top-down isometric perspective offers a deliberately nostalgic touch that evokes an era when racing was about track knowledge and timing more than horsepower and hyper-realism. The visual style of Super Woden GP is simple but distinctive, using bright colors, sharp edges, and clean environmental design to recreate the feel of classic arcade racing. The tracks take players through a wide variety of settings—forests, cities, deserts, and icy circuits—each rendered with minimalist charm. There’s a clear focus on readability, ensuring that every curve and chicane is visible even from a high camera angle. Despite its modest graphical fidelity, the game’s presentation has a cohesive retro aesthetic, blending modern polish with old-school clarity. The music perfectly complements the visuals: a lively, synth-driven soundtrack channels 90s arcade energy, giving races an infectious sense of pace and momentum. The sound effects are punchy and raw, and while they may lack the layered depth of modern racers, they reinforce the game’s nostalgic direction rather than feeling dated. Super Woden GP’s structure borrows from both arcade and simulation traditions. At its core, it’s a career-based racer built around progression. Players start with a small budget and a basic vehicle, entering minor races to earn money and unlock better cars. The game boasts an impressive lineup of over seventy vehicles inspired by real-world manufacturers, divided across different classes and performance levels. Races are grouped into various categories—sprint events, endurance challenges, rally courses, and championship cups—each offering cash rewards and new opportunities. There’s a clear sense of accomplishment in upgrading to a faster, sleeker car, and the steady drip of new content encourages repeated play. However, Super Woden GP doesn’t feature deep car customization or mechanical tuning; the focus is on mastering the handling of each vehicle rather than modifying it. This simplicity aligns with the game’s philosophy of accessibility and immediacy, but players accustomed to modern racing sims might find the lack of tuning options limiting. The handling model defines the experience, and it’s both a source of charm and frustration. Cars slide and drift with a heavy, momentum-driven feel that demands precision. The controls are intentionally unforgiving at first—one overcorrection or misjudged turn can send you spinning into barriers—but once you adjust, the satisfaction of nailing perfect laps is immense. The physics exist somewhere between arcade responsiveness and simulated weight, offering a tactile sense of traction that rewards patience and practice. Mastering each track becomes a game of rhythm, where anticipating turns and balancing throttle input matter more than outright speed. This learning curve is steep, and some players may find it alienating early on, but it’s also part of what gives the game longevity. Every victory feels earned, not handed out through forgiving mechanics or rubber-banding opponents. In terms of game modes, Super Woden GP offers a satisfying amount of variety for its scale. The career mode serves as the main attraction, encouraging players to climb the ranks by earning money and stars. Alongside that, time trial and single-race options allow for more casual play, while the inclusion of local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players is a standout feature. In an era when local multiplayer has all but disappeared from racing games, Super Woden GP’s couch co-op feels like a gift for nostalgic players who remember the joy of competitive racing on the same screen. The absence of online multiplayer is a notable limitation—it restricts competitive play to local sessions—but for those who appreciate a more personal, social racing experience, the local mode adds tremendous replay value. AI opponents are competent, though occasionally predictable; their consistency makes races more about personal mastery than chaotic luck. Where the game falters slightly is in its campaign structure and progression pacing. The need to grind for currency and unlock specific cars before entering certain events can become repetitive, particularly in the midgame when rewards slow down. The repetition is compounded by a lack of narrative framing or meaningful variation between championships, leaving some races feeling interchangeable. Yet, this minimalist approach is in line with the game’s old-school ethos—it’s meant to be about pure driving skill rather than storytelling. The visual filters and track design also occasionally draw criticism for being too uniform or for obscuring track details under heavy lighting effects, though these are minor issues that rarely disrupt the flow of play. Super Woden GP ultimately succeeds not because of technological innovation but because of its clarity of purpose. It knows exactly what it wants to be: a throwback to an era of pure, skill-based racing, where the fun comes from mastering the lines, shaving seconds off lap times, and feeling the joy of control. Its simple systems hide surprising depth, and its accessible yet demanding driving model ensures that every improvement feels meaningful. For fans of retro racing, it’s both a nostalgic reminder and a refreshing modern entry in a neglected subgenre. While its limited customization and lack of online features might deter some, its heart lies firmly in the right place. Super Woden GP stands as a love letter to the past—a game built not to impress with spectacle, but to remind players how rewarding it feels to earn victory one corner at a time. Rating: 8/10

Oddly enough, a competitive sim racing friend recommended Woden GP series to me. He said that it is arcadey enough to be fun yet includes a surprising amount of physics and a lot of content. Well, it's spot-on, this racing game was a pleasant surprise for me. Definitely it was made by fans of '90s top-down arcade race games like Death Rally (minus death) or Micro Machines (minus micro). It's fun. I'm a fan of some more hardcore top-down racers like GeneRally or Circuit Superstars, especially on long journeys with a Steam Deck but make no mistake, Super Woden GP has a great difficulty curve to be challenging. It is a nice addition to my Deck collection as it has a very tiny data footprint. You know, the more games you can cram into the Deck - the better. I'd also give a high-five for the music. The tracks are a nice pack of tributes to old-school '90s melodic yet powerful game and arcade music, sometimes even reminding me of '80s C64 composer masterminds like Ben Daglish. From a chiptuine musician: hats off, guys. I'll definitely let it roll ingame.

100% Achievement Review: A quick review based on my experience completing all the (available) achievements. Title: Super Woden GP Summary: Top-down racing game Personal notes: Super Woden GP is a old school top-down racing game. You race through different events ranging from Championships to Rally or weekend events. I found it to be very reminiscent of older Gran Turismo games but with an aerial view instead of first person. I enjoyed the classic retro art design and maps. I also enjoyed the soundtrack to a certain extent but was eventually lead to turning it off after multiple repeats. I thought that the manufacturers were well made along with a pretty extensive list of more than 70 regional cars from various points in racing history. I found the handling system to be difficult but rewarding after a slight learning curve. I ran into no issues running this game which was nice as well. Achievement-wise this game is pretty straight-forward but quite time consuming. I listed the ones I had the most difficulty with below. Two relating to the final, World Championship, while the other two are just really long distance achievements. Overall I really enjoyed my time with this game, despite the long grind for kilometres at the end of all of the events. It is a little bit of a niche genre but if you enjoy racing games I feel like you will enjoy this one, especially for its asking price. Time it took to complete: 28hrs Most difficult achievement(s): - Hardcore driver (You have won the World Championship playing on Hard level.) - Superstar (You have won the world championship with a reputation higher than 8'5.) - 3000/5000 KM! (You have driven more than 3,000/5,000 kilometers.) Difficulty rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆ 6/10 Overall rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆ 7/10

Being honest with you I want to play the sequel, but the first one came bundled in, which is good of course, but as you can imagine with so few spare time I wont be able to dedicate it to the first game. But from what I'm reading both games are quite similar, and the 2nd one is an improved sequel, so I did play this one as a kind of... proof of concept before jumping into the sequel. I'm really liking what I'm seeing, beautiful isometric visuals, nice gameplay and GT style progression,

I'm only reviewing for games (gems) that have less than 1000 reviews, but definitely deserve the recognition. And this game, as of today, has only 300 reviews. Top down racing game (oh really?), easy to play but needs time to master, because every car has different grip, accelaration, handling, and you also have to get used to the tracks, too. Graphics are nice, sounds are ok, and challenge is there to keep you fired up. If you like racing games in general, just go and buy this, and its successor.
