Tales of Xillia was my first tales game and I really enjoyed it back on the PS3, it wasn't without it's flaws and thankfully this remaster has addressed some of them- I wish it did more but as it is? It's good. The good: -120fps in the field and combat. No more 30/60fps. -Goes to 4k 120 and seemingly does it without any hitch. I haven't gotten to the larger spells that'd drop the framerate hard on the PS3 but so far? Smooth sailing. -Comes with all the US DLC, I'm pretty sure there was more DLC in JP but none of that is here. You got your xmas outfits, maid/butler/school/retro tales outfits. -The art/videos seem to be either upscaled or they used higher res files. I didn't see any upscaling artifacts. -EN/JP audio. -I THINK the english audio is a bit higher in bitrate? The voices still sounds compressed but I recall it sounding worse on the PS3 version. If the voices bothered you then it'll probably still bother ya here but at least JP is right there. -Load times seem to be better, not that they were bad in the OG but I feel like they've manged to speed it up. -You have access to the grade shop at launch & unknown difficulty. Though I'm not sure you want to do unknown without the best weapons that you could carry over. And they give you enough to 'buy' all of the options there. Also if you're unsure if you want the 2x or 5x or both for EXP or any of the ones that say you can turn on and off? Just take them and enable or disable them as you're playing vs cutting yourself off entirely. -Co-op is intact. If ya liked playing with a friend? Ya still can here. The mixed: -Textures are upscaled but I feel like they could have been done up a bit better? I'm not sure if they didn't have the source files for the textures but the textures can be pretty blocky. -You can use older tales themes in battle- I figured this would work like Berseria where you could pick what song but you can instead make a . . . playlist of songs? You can pick what go on it but I'd prefer more specific ones. And on my list there's only 2 from Berseria and about the same for the other games. (This might be deluxe only, IDK). This is a bit annoying since some costumes come with a battle them- which I figured this would be a means of turning it off. But no, you can't select the default Xillia battle theme or turn off the costume music. Not that I've seen anyway. -No button options, so if ya got a PS or Switch controller and you prefer those visual prompts? Only Xbox here. But the inputs are fully remappable in game. The bad: -I figured they'd do better to improve the rendering distance since there was a lot of obvious pop in in the OG game and it'd happen at like 20 feet in some towns. It seems to be the same here or only slightly improved. -Very, limited graphics options. Resolution, framerate, vsync, AA and that's about it. I'm aware this is a game that should run on a lot of systems but still odd to see it so limited. I think the game is worth it, might want to wait for a sale given I feel there's some lacking aspects but overall? I'm happy with this remaster but I will say it feels pretty barebones, but what is here is good enough and it's certainly better than the PS3 version. Which it was fine for the time had a LOT of slowdown in later battles. Sunburst and moves like that killed the framerate in that game. Edit: Since some folks don't seem to know where the options are? You have to get past the grade shop and scroll down in the next screen. There you can edit graphics options but ya gotta dig through ALL the other options. When I said it's lacking in aspects, this is kinda what I meant. Lacking graphical options, but also ya gotta find where they even are.

Xillia was one of a few Tales games I was always hoping would get remastered, since I've never been able to play it on the platforms it released on initially. I can't judge in comparison to the original, but I can at least voice my thoughts. Good Things: 1. Full settings breakdown before you even start the first cutscene, immediately after hitting new game. While it's odd that you cannot go through the settings on the main menu itself, this is a very welcome thing despite that. 2. I can't speak for others, but at least on my hardware (Win11, 3080, i7 11700K, NVME drive), I am not finding any stutters, tears, or visual glitches, perfectly clean on the regular settings with 120fps. [Edit @ Oct31: Did end up noticing some screen tearing. From a quick search, Vsync may not operate while in Borderless Windowed, and decided to just force it in the Nvidia control panel anyways, as I don't care for playing around with dedicated full screen. Screen tearing fixed after the fact. Tearing was minor enough that it only really occurred with high movement (maximum camera swivel, or quick camera transitions in cutscenes), so it may be related to camera optimization.] Complaints: 1. The camera swivel, with controller, and at maximum settings, still feels like mud. Even at maximum, I don't think anything can be done by it somehow having acceleration coded into it, as it has a slight acceleration and deceleration on start/stop. 2. There's... a disturbing amount of voiced lines, it feels like a lot of the ones mid-combat, that have odd audio quality/mixing. Specifically within the JP voiceover, cutscene voice lines are clean, but outside of that there's a mish-mash of ones that sound great, some okay, others like they were taken with a cheap 5$ mic in a public bathroom. I'm unsure if this existed in the original, but I must still mark it down anyways right now. 3. I have to be critical: why is there DLC to buy levels in the game...? Pointlessly predatory monetization is not a good look, and I surely hope nobody is actually lazy or foolish enough to buy such rubbish. This is all for now at roughly an hour and change of gameplay, I'll likely come back to this to add as I find more things.

Because I saw some misinformation, I’m writing this review. Some people complain about missing VSync or graphics options, but you can actually access them from the main menu. Go to New Game, progress through the grade shop, and press Start Game. Then you’ll find an Options menu — scroll down until you see Graphics Settings. You can also access this menu anytime after loading your save file. I don’t know why the developers set it up this way — it’s a poor design choice — but the graphics settings do exist. A proper review of the game’s quality will come once I finish it. So far, it works fine.

This is a pretty solid remaster of a game widely considered to be unfinished and rough around the edges despite having an acclaimed battle system. They remade the entire game in Unity this time instead of just using it as a wrapper like they did for Graces. Despite this, the game feels mostly identical outside of the menus feeling about twice as laggy as they did on real hardware, which is honestly a major flaw. Gameplay seems mostly unchanged to a fault, meaning that bosses will still tech out of combos every 7-12 hits. This famously makes melee combat pretty dry and not viable compared to Rowen and Elize spamming Fireball and Bloody Howling, so if you were hoping that was fixed, you're better off waiting for the Xillia 2 remaster. As the game is fully remade in Unity this time, this by proxy means that modding will be the easist it's been for any Tales game next to Arise. If anyone is a talented Unity modder and wants to help mod out the bosses teching out of combos, please contact me. Deck performance is great and unlike many games with the Verified checkmark, this game actually deserves it. Locked 60FPS at all time, native 800p resolution and uses less than 30% CPU and GPU even in heated battles. Considering the Switch version is barebones, runs at 30FPS and has no Switch 2 enhancements, this is the best option for anyone looking to play the game on the go.
