A Discord server friend recommended this game to me, so I gave it a shot. To be honest, this usually isn't my kind of game. There are definitely some issues with it. The story, although mostly clear by the end, tried to use a form of abstract presentation by scattering it about in notes and documents throughout the game. As far as I understand it, the premise is rather odd. Somehow, a great white shark saves a young girl from drowning, gets attacked by people, and then gets rescued at an aquarium? Then somehow a jealous man envies the aquarium director's success and shoots him/his fiancee; in the meantime, a couple of sea creatures use a magic stone to transform into human-like creatures and trap other people in their world. Hard to follow, right? I'm still not sure what the devs were trying to communicate with it aside from some yuri vibes in a weird world. It's not without its positive points though! I did enjoy how experimental it got and how it tried to play around with indie horror game tropes in a cute RPGMaker style 2D game. It had an excellent soundtrack and the VAs for the main characters in it did a great job. Overall, I could tell the developers wanted the players to take the game/story seriously. Some of the sections involving music and performances were really well done. A final note: If you like yuri, for sure, it's definitely in there. Retro was a cool character. There's even some hint of yaoi placed in it, but it's mostly at the end of the game and all rather wholesome. I'd cautiously recommend it, but it's definitely not the game of the year or anything. Just keep that in mind and you should be fine.

A truly emotional journey that stayed with me long after it ended. The story is deeply moving and had me in tears. The stunning pixel art creates a beautiful atmosphere, and the voice acting adds so much depth to the characters and their moments. I highly recommend this game. It’s a heartfelt experience that’s absolutely worth your time.

Some very classic-feeling RPG Maker horror. Its pretty rough around the edges, with quite a few mismatched tilesets in the maps and some cheesy writing, but I found the whole experience very enjoyable. Part of the fun was just seeing all the usual RPG Maker-puzzle-horror game silliness, but I think it manages to balance it out with some genuinely nice atmosphere, a lot of creative ideas, and a very endearing passion for marine life. I do fit into a niche demographic of people who really enjoy aquariums and are very nostalgic for RPG Maker games, so it almost feels tailor made... 🦀

The Aquarium does not dance is a somewhat short but nice and fairly tight game. The artwork is really well done and detailed, with quite a few CGs that are nice to look at. The music is really calming at the low points, and intense when building tension. The characters, for the game's length and goals, are used well and by the end tell a pretty emotional story in a setting that really hasn't been explored enough in games. If you like RPG maker horror games, it's a pretty nice play. Not to mention the very nice English translation not present in the freeware release. With that said, I think there is one misstep the game took that overall dampened the experience, and that's how it did its horror. Specifically, I think its use of gore worked against it. There's a lot of potential for horror in this game, especially body horror, but it goes fairly untouched on except for once or twice. There's also a lack of monsters beyond a couple, and their (pretty good) appearances feel pretty brief. It ends up making the gore feel forced, and by the end it took me out of the experience. If they removed gore entirely apart from just a select few scenes and focused more on unique monsters and the creepies' implications, it would've been way more immersive and made those scenes much more impactful. One final note, the game's puzzles are fairly simple and straightforward beyond one nearly unsolvable one. I'm not sure if it's a localization problem or it's just horribly obtuse but don't feel bad if you get stumped and have to look it up, it's just not well done. With all that said, I really did enjoy my time with The Aquarium does not dance. You can do it in 1-2 sessions and it has some pretty well rounded strengths, leaving for a satisfying experience without it overstaying its welcome, so especially on a sale, I think it's worth trying out.
