If you like turn based combat games, party based, you might like this. It is not great, but a 7 out of 10. Enemies, fights, missions, dungeons are a bit repatative. The pixel art looks dated and the game usually is in drab, shady colors. Spells and effects are not very spectaculair to watch. The gear is mostly a passive bonus to stats. But the good things are that it is challenging. Classes (8) do differ. There is a lot of levelling up, and especially the tech trees for abilities and spells is very nice and effective. The beginning is a bit punishing, but deeper into the game things became much easier. But still challenging. It takes elements of Darkest Dungeon, like time pressure, negative events and dungeon happenings, but you can save the game to avoid this if you like (there is an ironman mode). It took me about 35 hours to finish, including like 30 optional sidequests. Not a game I will remember for long, but okay. There are much more exciting turn based RPG's out there, but when you did those and are looking for more of the genre, this might interest you.

IMHO better than Battle Brothers, but don't expect any further updates, the roadmap is a lie and devs seem to have hit the eject button. Pretty good as it is tho.

Iron oath is a squad based tactical RPG. You build a company of mercenaries out of classes found throughout the world and level up their abilities and find gear. This is all pretty standard. Classes have a decent array of skills and you can choose which to use for each class before heading into a dungeon. There is a collection of aoe, single target and support/healing abilities to make sure every class can have a purpose in every possible class combination. Class skill leveling is relatively basic. There are 12 "talents" of which you can pick 6 to upgrade the ability. You can talent points when you level and all abilities share the talent points. Gear is also relatively simplistic with light, medium and heavy armor and classes having only 1-2 possible weapon types they can use. Battle Brothers and Wartales are similar mercenary company games, but Iron Oath plays more like Darkest Dungeon than those other two. While there is a world map and battles are fought on a hex grid, you proceed through dungeons with events that can happen on each possible tile. Sometimes you get a battle, other times you get a shrine that can give you a blessing. The skill system is also close to darkest dungeon in the way you choose what skills the class uses I do have a couple of issues with the game, but they are relatively minor. Time moves pretty fast. There are 120 days in a year, and it will routinely take you 15-30 days to get to a job site and another 15-30 back. If you collect a couple of jobs to do at once, you can easily pass a year and a half before you return to who gave you the job. Money also is a pretty minor aspect of the game. It does not take long before you have enough money to not have to deal with mercenary wages being an issue at all. I believe part of this is due to how fast time can move. Overall it is a good game if you like these types of mercenary company experiences. It is a different change of pace from Battle Brothers asthis has magic and legs.

This is a pretty fun game and the art direction is phenomenal, but for some reason, it couldn't hold my attention. I enjoyed the dungeon crawling, which can go sideways at any moment, leaving you in an enjoyably stressful situation. The combat itself SHOULD be awesome. There are varied classes, a bunch of skills, enemy weaknesses, and environmental hazards. Even so, there was something missing. Anyway, it's a fun game and even though it didn't hook me, maybe it'll hook you!

I 100%'d this game around December 2024 though i did not write a review until now for really no good reason at all. This game is really fun though it can be a bit annoying at times from my experience. Certain enemy types like to almost cheese a lot imo (those flipping bandits with falcons- yes i have a personal vendetta against those lol) but in general this game is well balanced and fun to play, even if one were to spend essentially 5000 ingame days doing sidequests and occassionally the main story. In game days go by really quickly ingame but don't affect the story itself, except for the massive dragon that tries to burn down a town every iirc 1000 days. This might count as a spoiler but i'm mentioning that dragon so that any new player knows to not ignore the dragon. ALWAYS help out the town it attacks ,even if you have to walk across the entire map (just make sure you are not overencumbered lol), as otherwise the town that is attacked will be practically burnt to the ground, though iirc this is temporary and it slowly but surely will be worth going to again. I do not remember exactly how it works but the only exception to this is 'Wealden', which is connected to a essentially separate story from the main story, and is worth a couple achievements on its own. (Go to the vanguard fort near Wealden (preferably with atleast lvl 15-20 characters, even on the easiest difficult) for that specific story. It's short but fairly challenging imo, even on the easiest difficulty.) I do wish to highlight that i did the entire game on the easiest difficulty, though this was no cakewalk (probably because i am not an expert at games like this one lol) as i lost at least a couple characters during my playthrough. The most devastating loss was when i misclicked my archer into the middle of the enemy formation, when i was intending to attack the enemy instead. This is the sort of thing you remember even months after you complete a game lmao But genuinely, even if you do the easiest difficulty and 100% the game like i did, it is well worth the money and even though many encounters will feel remarkably simple/easy... there will be encounters that are a challenge, especially in the more difficult missions. As for all the other difficulties in the game , i have not tried any of those but i'd imagine they are just as well-balanced as the easiest difficulty. I truly learnt a lot from playing this game and it has made me better at games in general , even though i did by all means go through the entire game on practically baby mode.
