I wouldn't really call this a game; it's more like a choose-your-own-adventure book presented in a game format. The gameplay is very much like reading one of those books, with each branching choice leading to a different plot path. It's quite slow-paced and feels more like reading a novel than playing a video game, so patience and time commitment are needed. Did I mention it's like reading a book? That being the case, the story is compelling and characterizations are given a lot of weight, with even small interactions sometimes having unexpectedly large impacts. The graphic novel stop-motion art style is well done, with detailed characters and environments evoking a steampunk "age of explorers" setting. The cramped and semi-claustrophobic feel of ship confinement is well conveyed as the mysterious crisis grows. The GUI, however, is clunky and could definitely use some streamlining. Resource management isn't intuitive and "turning the page" on literally every line of dialogue quickly gets tedious. Several hours into the game it still feels like very little progress has been made. While this fits perfectly with the story, it's the opposite of what engaging gameplay should do. The engrossing story almost compensates for this shortcoming, but the slow pace and clumsy GUI might lead to this being a book that never gets read all the way through. Even so, if you like a good story and have a few hours to spare, this is worth a look.

I just want to start off by clarifying that the Pale Beyond is not a horror or a mystery game. It's a survivor game which tells the stories of people trapped in extreme conditions with you having to lead them to safety. The game's strength is by far its story. The Main characters each have compelling backstories and goals which drive their personalities and conflicts with each other. The writing is great at writing nuance characters, no one on your crew is a bad or comically evil person however just like people in real life their flaws can cause conflict with others and you dealing with those things as a leader is the gripping part of the game. Even the minor members of the crew have been given enough information so you at least get an idea of who you're dealing and some even have a little arc. Honestly I can't imagine playing this game without the epilogue but even still I wish some of these minor characters also appear in the epilogue so we can get some closure on their small but impactful stories. By the end of the game you will genuinely come to like these people and NOT want them to die which will drive your gameplay. The main story itself is also VERY well written as events progress in a logical order to a clear end goal. The writing also takes into account a surprising number of variations with the choices you pick so you really do feel like the people and the world are reacting to your leadership. This is all backed by beautiful artwork and great thematic music during key moments. The art and music deserve the highest rankings by themselves. This brings me to the last part of the review. Gameplay. So the survivor mechanics are well establish and familiar to anyone who plays games like this (Explore, collect food and keep people healthy). The game is also pretty forgiving to a lot of newbie mistakes so I wouldn't stress if you're not perfectly optimize. Outside of one or two clearly designed traps for first runs I doubt you will lose many people without specifically trying to kill people. Over the course of the game its engaging enough that you won't mind as you're reading the story but I would be lying if I didn't say I wish the game would have built off of these mechanics towards the end game (maybe go for a base building angle). The worst mechanic however is the timeloop system. So this gets unlocked at the very end of the game and.......it's not great. The biggest problem is that this game is a good length game (I clocked in 8 hours) and I have zero desire to go back and redo 5 hours of gameplay just for a few changes to the story. The story is good, but not THAT good. Yea, the game doesn't really feel built for this sort of game mechanic as it sort of functions as just using save scuming to redo your choices while offering you some different dialogue options. To be fair though I didn't really use it much so I could have missed something. Anyway the game doesn't make you use it and honestly the story ends just as satisfyingly without it. With all that said the writing more than makes up for the game mechanics and I still highly recommend this game.

I bought it in a bundle, and played it on a whim. It took me to the end of the world, and then it stayed with me.

I think this is a good one-shot game. It creates the illusion of choice nicely, but after trying to play it a second time, I discovered that the choices I thought I had weren’t really choices because, after selecting a different dialogue option, I would be forced into the same outcome anyway. I don't think I will play it second time. I liked the gameplay experience. There’s no ticking clock, so you can take your time to read the dialogue and make your choices. I enjoyed the experience overall. The ending was interesting, although I either didn’t fully understand the story or noticed some contradictions in it. The graphics is amazing, and I love how every single character was designed. Beautiful art style! One more thing to mention: the game is a little bit buggy and I really disliked no possiblity to stop playing in the middle of the chapter. Some of them were quite long and I sometimes had to restart them because I had no time to continue playing them to the end.

An excellent initial release from a new studio. Resource management with believable, well-written characters, emotional soundtrack, and gorgeous, hand-drawn artwork. I never thought a game like this would have me constantly thinking about it when I wasn't playing it, yet here we are.
