I, as a general rule, don’t play reflex-based games. If something needs me to respond quickly by pressing the correct button, I, by and large, will neither respond nor press the correct button. It’s not who I am, it’s not how I game, and I’ve come to terms with that. There is one exception. Spell Brigade is a bullet heaven roguelike. You - and potentially your friends/internet randos - play as one of several wizards dropped into a battlefield where the only goal is survival. Facing wave after infinite wave of crab-bug monsters, wizards upgrade their spells, acquire new spells, and do their best to scale their builds before the monsters inevitably catch up with them. It’s a game that relies on both a sense of strategy and an increasingly intimate understanding of its mechanics, as well as raw reflexive skill. Or, in my case, a keen understanding of how to cheese the mechanics well enough to not be as reliant on reflex. Moonerang and Vital Strike is the best combo, and you cannot change my mind on that. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3719694078 Like many roguelikes, Spell Brigade advertises that each run is different, and there is a great degree of truth to that. While the game can get repetitive if played back to back to back, the large number of wizards and spells means that any given run won’t necessarily have the same gamefeel as any other. Playing with Bryony and her giant plant spell, for instance, is a fairly different experience from Balthazar and his gross incompetence. While the general gameloop stays the same - kill monsters, run away from monsters, do occasional quests, kill boss - what approaches a player takes and the paths they choose to follow vary. This is especially true if players choose to add a modifier to their run, such as single spell or endless mode. While the gameloop stays the same, the strategies change, as does the potential for mayhem. This is, after all, a game that is fundamentally focused on mayhem. This is a game where the screen floods with colours, noises, and things all screaming for the player’s attention, to the point where some graphics settings provide the option to turn the visuals down a notch. The mayhem is both on the part of the enemies, who at some point will just become a mad swarm, as well as the players, who become a swarm all their own. This is especially true when playing multiplayer. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3719694253 While Spell Brigade only just released in 1.0, I have been playing it in early access for over a year, watching it grow and develop, with each new release being excitedly chatted about in my friends’ group chat. The vast majority of my hundred some odd hours in this game is not me loading it up to sit in stark concentration by myself, eyes glued to the bugs swarming around me, but rather, to yell at Jeff that his sperm beaned me for 180 damage again, or to warn everyone to stay away from the entire left side of the map because Jacob is doing Nonsense again, or to go resurrect Zach for the fourth time that run. This is a game that has come to represent silly dumb fun for my friends and I, a game we can load up any time we want to do something together that is both a challenge and satisfying, and know that we’ll all have a great time, and that most of all, that great time will be had together. This is a game that is at its best when played with a group who understands it, but doesn’t take it too seriously, and is happy to grouse when I start cackling because I put lightning on everything and now the game’s framerate is chugging along like it’s trapped in 1996. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3719694367 That we are still playing Spell Brigade is a testament to what this game can be. We are, perhaps, the fans the devs had hoped they would acquire as they built this game. We have our own memes, our own jokes, our own theorycrafting about which spells are the best and worst, and conversations about every update and patch. It’s specifically because of the combination of both variety and predictability that we continue to play. The gameloop stays the same, sure, but how Jeff is feeling about how he’s playing? What shenanigans Jacob is going to get up to in the corner of the map I can no longer visit? How many attempts it will take to kick the ball into the goal that appeared in the single least convenient spot on the map? These change every time, and it’s these subjective experiences that keep the game fun and a staple of my time together with my friends. There is still a lot to criticise with Spell Brigade. Its unlock system is a grind, and despite the time I have spent on this game, I have still not gotten all the achievements or unlocks. For those who play for unlocks or upgrades or completionism, this is a monstrously frustrating game specifically because of how much it asks players to grind for that completion. For players like me, though, who load up Spell Brigade to goof off and spend time with the people they love? It’s an absolute gem of a game, and I’m delighted by the love that has so clearly been poured into it. It’s a fantastic little romp, and I am always happy to give it just one more run. Updated thoughts after the 1.0 update I originally reviewed this game as “mixed” because while the core gameplay was incredibly fun, it felt like it lacked the content and polish needed for long-term replayability. After spending a good amount of time with the 1.0 update, I can confidently say my opinion has improved a lot. The core gameplay loop is still the same chaotic action roguelike experience, but the game now feels far more polished and complete. Around 80% of the UI has been redesigned, and honestly, it’s one of the biggest improvements. Everything feels smoother, cleaner, and much more responsive. Even something as simple as loading into the game and choosing between Solo or Co-Op immediately gives a better first impression. The new progression additions are also great. The new Covenants tab looks really promising, the Wizard Badges look amazing, and I absolutely love the new title system where you unlock titles by achieving higher ranks on levels. Small additions like wizard emotes are also surprisingly useful, especially when queueing with random players without voice chat. Crossplay is another huge win for the game and should help the community a lot long-term. The infusion system now feels way deeper too. The amount of combinations and builds you can create is honestly insane, and it adds a ton more replayability compared to before. Infinite runs also feel much better now with the added scaling and improved rewards. The new Ascension outfits are also really well designed. As for content, they added a new wizard called Knelly, alongside cosmetic DLCs like the Disciples of Sol’phish Skin Pack. There’s also the Ultimate Edition, but personally I don’t think it’s worth buying unless you simply want to support the developers, since it mainly includes cosmetics, a digital artbook, soundtrack, and gold/silver skins. Most importantly, the developers clearly listened to feedback. The game feels more polished, performs better, and during my time with the update I haven’t run into any bugs so far. You can genuinely tell the developers care about improving the game, and this update finally feels like the step the game needed. At this point, I’d absolutely recommend the game if you enjoy roguelikes, especially with friends. Whether on sale or full price, it now feels much easier to recommend because the difference between launch and 1.0 is massive... One thing that honestly really annoyed me with the 1.0 update was the achievement reset/rework. When I launched the game after updating, almost all of my achievements popped again as if I had just unlocked them for the first time. It’s frustrating because it completely wiped the original unlock dates and progression history. I liked being able to look back and see when I originally completed certain achievements, especially after putting so much time into 100%ing the game before 1.0. Now it just looks like I suddenly unlocked everything at once, which honestly feels really bad from a completionist perspective. I understand they probably changed the achievement structure internally, but I really wish there had been a way to preserve original unlock timestamps instead of replacing everything entirely!!

Great game to play on the Steam Deck. Well worth the money with amount of content already existing, but also with the regular updates we get for this game.

Originally, when my group picked this up, we thought it would be a good one off experience for all us to try. A multiplayer Survivor-like sounds great in paper and we definitely thought, for $10, why not? Lo and behold, every single week, we keep coming back to this game, which we affectionately call “Lil Wizzies”. The perfection is in its simplicity — a few boards, a bunch of little wizards with different skillsets, endless combinations of builds. Do we need some more music and soundscape choices? Sure. Can it benefit from some more bosses and enemy types? Absolutely. But as an early access game for $10 that keeps adding onto the roadmap? To say it’s worth every penny is truly an understatement.
