World of Kung Fu Review: A little gem of a game, but flawed. I wishlisted Wandering Sword, another indie kung fu game, as soon as I saw the teaser. This game, however, gave me doubts. I played WS first, but as soon as I started WoKF, I couldn’t stop playing! Retro Presentation: The graphics of WoKF are very basic, but charming. The characters look like Funko, very big heads with small bodies. The character art though, is really good, and with around 100 characters (most of them recruitable!), it amazes me the quantity AND quality of the art. The music is very basic, but there are many memorable tunes. The hauntingly beautiful song of the intro lives in my head rent-free. Both the graphics and music gave me Final Fantasy 5 vibes. Outstanding Character Creation One of my favorite RPGs of all time is Dragon Age Origins. One of the reasons I love it is because of the origins themselves, each one starting with a unique mini-adventure. While WoKF has almost double the origins, all of them start the same. HOWEVER, each origin gives you access to unique perks, like being able to learn certain kung fu styles. Speaking of martial art styles, like many wuxia rpgs, they are divided by weapon. We have Fist, Polearms, Saber, Sword, Musical Instruments, Finger and Hidden weapon. Each one has its own perks, and they benefit from different stats. There are a couple of styles outside of these categories. Story We create our character who starts in an abandoned temple, and along an unknown fellow, we see a match between kung fu masters. We then get to choose between some kung fu manuals and then begin our adventure. With little direction, we begin a little journey to become a known force in the Jianghu, the underworld of martial arts. While the game has a story, it is very free in what we can do. I will just say that you you should decide to be an honorable character or an evil one, since that will dictate a couple of things in the story, like certain kung fu styles and followers. Speaking of which, this game has A LOT of possible recruits, each with some minor requirements. At the end of the game, we will be able to join one of the powers of the Jianghu and then participate in a grand tournament. There are many subplots worth checking and I would say the story is on of the strongest points of the game. Combat System The game is not easy to learn. It has many variables that will make learning the game difficult, but after a while you will come to learn the game and then enjoy all of its complexity. Unlike other wuxia games, this one has kind of TTRPG stats, all of them affecting combat one way or another, and unless you want to learn “silly” kung fu (that is, special kung fu closed to high intelligence characters), you shouldn’t dump any stat. This game has a LOT of kung fu styles! There are divided by weapon, and some of them are cultivation, but not only that, there are a couple that have a philosophical requirement! What? Yeah, basically, in this game, you need to be a Buddhist, Taoist, Confucianist, Evil mofo or, almost at the very end of the game, you can become “open mind” and learn any kung fu, regardless of philosophical requirements. I find this very flavorful and will steal this for my TTRPG games ;) Exploration You can play this game with a mouse or a control, but the mouse has the benefit of revealing anything on the screen that is interactable, as well as letting you bypass any maze there is. Which is not bad, mind you. Apart from this, there are many secrets, and there is a lot to discover. This is one of those games that can be replayed a lot, and you will still find something new, recruit new characters, find new styles and get new endings. At the very least, a second playthrough opens new origins, and you will probably get a better experience after learning the ropes of the game. Is anything bad? Sigh… The worst offender is that there is some text at the end that is not translated, and it probably includes some cool lore about the setting. There are some bugs too, like after joining the Inn faction, you have to finish the game from there, since saving the game will corrupt the files, so either you do that or join another faction. Conclusion Even after the untranslated text, the bugs, the complexity, the repetitiveness of some fights or some strategies… I had a very satisfying playthrough from beginning to end and got really into the individual stories of some of the characters. There are also some genuinely humorous scenes, and there is a fight that, even if it wasn’t that difficult, was one of the most exciting fight scenes I have ever played in any videogame, and I’ve been a gamer since the Atari LMAO. Suggestions for Game Improvement Revise the translation and translate the unfinished scenes. Squash the bugs. Make collabs with other great wuxia indie games like Wandering Sword or Hero’s Adventure, and you will surely get another great in the genre, like the aforementioned 2.

It's fun. I did learn a Kung Fu that immediately castrated me though. It grew back though, so it's fine.

This game getting mixed reviews is so accurate. I got platinum in this game and I can assure you that there's so many flaws about this game that made it so irritating to play. So much time wasted because of so much bugs in many parts of the game. There used to be a time where progression was a bit of an issue because you don't know exactly where to go because your list doesn't necessarily specify which are the main quests. Even amidst all these issues, I still love this game because it pretty much gives you an authentic jianghu experience where enemies are higher leveled, the thrill of finding new manuals, joining a sect, and many more. Every build is viable with some obviously more broken than the others but it gives you so much freedom on what you want to do. Overall, it's a 5/10. I would actually place this as a mixed review but that doesn't exist and I hope the devs focuses on fixing the game's problems first before doing these moves such as porting it to mobile.

Fun game if you like wushu type games (my only previous game of this type was Wandering Sword). Definitely doesn't deserved a mixed rating. The translation is acceptable, overall. Lots and lots of paths (Street Heroes vrs Feather Robes, later Street Heroes splits into Wulu Palace, many sects to join and leave, etc) and choices (some of them with later consequences). You will probably want a guide for the poetry completion contests, though.
