The complete opposite of modern ARPGs. No flashy, big numbers on screen, no dashing or teleporting around, just a slowpaced walk on dark corridors of mayhem and brutality.

As someone that loves Diablo 1 and has likely played it for multiple thousands of hours across various vanilla playthroughs, mods, speedruns, etc. I will say that in terms of gameplay and loot this feels the closest to a successor to Diablo. Yes, Diablo 2 was amazing, but it was quite different. This game captures the essence of Diablo 1 and modernizes it a bit (in a good way, stuff like quality of life changes) but stays true to the core formula. Its soundtrack and story are not as amazing, but I'd call them "good enough". The developer has also been updating the game with some nice QoL stuff, new content and balance changes, so the game will likely keep getting even better in the future. While I "only" have 23 hours in this game so far (across 2 slow/full clear playthroughs), I absolutely intend to replay this game more in the future. There's just that constant issue of having a big backlog of other games I also want to play. Absolutely recommended if you enjoyed Diablo 1!

A lot of fun, with a huge variety of abilities to employ. I was craving the lower speed and higher consequence of Diablo 1, and I got it! There are some minor things I might offer as suggestions for this or future games, but all and all, this felt really good! To counter some of the negative reviews I'm seeing: I played and beat the game with a melee focused wizard that buffed myself and used summons. Any class setup is absolutely viable. Also, while many of the items that drop don't have value-- that's the case with all ARPGs. You just don't have a town loop in this one. Which is something a lot of people don't like anyway. This fact this is sitting on mixed right now is criminal. It highlights the biggest issues that Steam Review face: the weight of a vote (up or down) of someone who doesn't get it equal to the weight of the vote of someone who does.

This actually good game makes you understand why Tristram in Diablo 1 is so important for the game itself. Let me explain: This game is a very bare-bones dungeon crawler that wears it's inspiration proudly on it's sleeve: Diablo 1. This part of the game is well executed and fun. Now, I could do a deep dive on the enemies and how the coven levels have an enemy that spikes the difficulty long before the end etc... However, in general it is all manageable and remains largely frustration free. This is why I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a very pure dungeon crawler where you survive on what you loot (there are shops on a few levels, but they don't buy items and I never really found anything in there that was really useful). This is the strength, but also the weakness of the game: As you have very limited space you will quickly realize that using it for health- and mana- and mixed drinks is the best use of the space, as no shop offers additional drinks that you can use to top up. Healing and refilling mana is not super straight forward in this game. I was unlucky and found very few drinks on one level leaving me with a nearly empty inventory when facing the next more dangerous foes. You can only heal or refill mana through 5 means: 1. potions (limited to luck with drops) 2. fountains (they don't refill and essentially replace a potion) 3. leveling up (in my play through that meant: 15 free heals, that is nowhere near enough to fill the gap) 4. Items (will come into play a later in the game and is insufficient if you get swarmed) 5. A spell that reduces you health after a few uses (never used it, because that is a nonsensical trade-off) In essence, you will prioritize every drink you find as if it was pure gold. This means that a lot of interesting weapons options will never be tried out because they would take up precious inventory space. This in turn makes most drops useless instead of turning them into a resource like in Diablo that you can sell to restock on potions and other things. This system could have been fixed rather easily by allowing players to somehow turn loot into potions. Given that it took me some 15 hours to beat the game, having the constant risk of essentially softlocking myself due to lack of potions to finish it feels bad. I fully understand that this brings tension (and oh boy did it work). But to me, this is the type of tension you don't want in such a game. A tension that tells you "I can stop playing at this point, because I will likely not be able to finish it" is not what you want your audience to think. I might sound nitpicky, but this is a problem that keeps this game just out of reach of greatness. But to be honest, this is still a pretty good dungeon crawler for fans of Diablo 1 (not that much 2 and especially not 3 or 4) that I really want to recommend. Just know what you are getting into. leave those skulls, focus in a specific weapon and have a long distance side arm that you can use to kite slower enemies around. Cherish items with heath refill and don't leave a single potion behind and don't waste them. Save often. Sometimes being too pure of an execution is not the most ideal choice.

I've finished 3 runs of the game so far: magic focused, 2-handed melee, and bow/crossbow. Given I still have some achievements to earn, I'll likely do more down the line. Tower of Kalemonvo, as many have already said, takes its inspiration from the original Diablo rather than its myriad fast-paced sequels and successors. That means it's closer to survival horror and dungeon crawlers than god simulators. With the achievements I have so far, I see very few people have actually beaten the game let alone reached the halfway point. Therefore, rather than elaborate ad nauseam about how ToK hearkens back to 90's gaming while building upon it like plenty of reviews have already done, I'll provide some pointers for actually beating the thing. Probably the most important stat to physical builds is Attack Rating. You won't do any damage if you can't hit your enemies, after all. Look for weapons with the "Accurate" prefix, and hang on to equipment that boosts the stat. Pumping Dexterity early on helps for sure, but in the late game you'll be getting much more from your gear than raw stats and can just boost the attribute only when you want to equip something. If you're still struggling to hit your target, remember that magic always deals damage if it collides. Hang onto items that boost Intelligence just so you can equip them when you want to read books. My most recent run (where I unlocked all spells) ended with my INT at 30, getting +20 from random loot for a total of 50. While that was still 4 dedicated levels' worth of stat points, it was far better than spending 8. Keep a sharp eye out for gear with wording like "+HP on kill" or "+MP% gained on hit". These are incredibly useful for not just surviving but thriving within the confines of the tower. Recharging mana especially helps nudge your character towards someone who can spam skills on a room filled with enemies and leave with nary a scratch. Not quite a Path of Exile character, but at least you won't crumple to a few zealous cultists. Keep in mind that percentile regain only works for basic attacks and combat arts, but on-kill effects do work with spells. Save scum, save scum, save scum! You have multiple save slots unlike Diablo 1, so make use of them. Don't like the book you got off that shelf? Reload! Got a bad shrine effect? Reload! Wasted a silver skull on a shop refresh only to get garbage? You guessed it, reload! Cleared a nasty room and now you're down to two potions? Split your save to see if it's recoverable, otherwise you know the drill. The game does get easier! When I first played the demo pre-launch and even in my latest run, the hardest floor was always, ALWAYS the second (the one with those relentless skeleton archers). Low on potions, rationing mana, savoring the refill that came with level ups... it was awesome! (Or maybe I'm a masochist.) However, as you learn enemy attacks, get good items, and unlock helpful skills, around the halfway point/last third the game will start to feel like a breeze (at least it did on Normal). I'm not kidding when I say I had to abandon full inventories worth of potions on old floors just because hauling them up was unnecessary. Good luck and soldier on! The tower won't explore itself!
