A Classic for a Reason I haven't played Diablo II before, but have always heard about how it's the best Action-RPG of all time. I've been waiting for the Steam release of the remaster for 5 years and finally, we have it. What took you so long Activision? Now please bring Starcraft, Diablo I and III, WoW... even though I am not interested in MMO. Gameplay and Remaster The remaster does exactly what it should. It modernizes the visuals while staying faithful to the original game. Every level, every new skill point and every piece of gear actually feels rewarding. You're constantly looking for your next upgrade instead of waiting for meaningless stat increases. The pacing is also much better. It gets into the action quickly and never wastes your time with unnecessary systems or live-service mechanics. Diablo IV has smoother combat, but I enjoyed Diablo II's overall game design much more. Finally, No Lag The biggest improvement for me isn't even the visuals. No constant rubberbanding. No random lag spikes. No always-online nonsense ruining the experience like Diablo IV constantly did. I can finally enjoy Diablo without fighting the servers every few seconds. Now I understand why Diablo II is a staple of gaming history. I tried it for the first time recently, with zero nostalgia attached, and I'm completely hooked. Complex doesn't automatically mean good. Diablo II is deep and complex, yet somehow incredibly simple at its core. Explore, fight, loot, upgrade, progress. The gameplay loop is ridiculously satisfying. But what I appreciate most is how restrained it feels. It's dim. It's dark. It can be slow. It isn't constantly trying to light up my dopamine receptors with flashing rewards, notifications, battle passes and endless noise. So many modern games feel like slot machines at a casino, constantly fighting for your attention. Diablo II just lets the game speak for itself. And there's something incredibly refreshing about playing a COMPLETE game. No Early Access. No waiting six months for the next content drop. No FOMO telling me I need to play this week or I'll miss something forever. The game is simply there. As it was. As it is. You progress because progressing feels rewarding, not because a timer told you to. I'm extremely pleased with my first Diablo experience. Decades later, I finally understand why this GAME is LEGENDARY.
It's 2002 and I'm playing Diablo 2. It's 2026 and I'm playing Diablo 2. I pick up this game every few years. It's simply one of the best games ever made. Also works on Linux through proton. I really hope that Blizzard won't ruin this game now that they might want to start developing it further. But it's Blizzard, they have the reverse Midas touch.
