TLDR: Deep build variety, excellent QoL features, and a satisfying endgame that shames titles with far bigger budgets, this ARPG punches well above its weight. There’s a hub that you can go back to at any time, then warp areas that you warp to for the story or endgame content. I love the hub and how everything I need is always there, but the levels themselves are a bit tedious and often too large. Thankfully, there’s not too many cave biomes, but things like caves are just a big annoyance to navigate. There is a narrative, and like most ARPGs, it’s not the big focus here. The gist is that you go back in time to witness significant events and fight through them. There didn’t seem to be anything significant here, and I’d say the story was just mid. Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – The gameplay loop is very similar to ARPGs - you’ll traverse from one point to another, while killing hundreds of enemies, gain loot, progress levels, and build out your character. The endgame is mostly the same thing, but with a focus on perfecting your gear through the augment system, where you destroy a legendary and add its effect to another item by using currency gotten through harder and harder content. Between the vast character progression, talent trees, loot, skills, masteries, I fell in love with the sheer number of ways to build your class. This perfectly satisfied my ARPG itch in a way few games do. The difficulty is very flexible and forgiving. The campaign offers 5 different difficulty levels that are designed to offer you better rewards when choosing them, but also its optional, and you can complete the campaign on the lowest setting. The game doesn’t start to get truly difficult until you do endgame activities and don’t have optimized stats, like resistances capped. Graphics (Quality/Technical) – Very poor, but serviceable. A fine line is toed here between being so pixelated that it's hard to understand what's going on, and pixel art. I would say this is PS1-era fidelity. The technical side is great, the game runs smooth with next to no issues. What really carries this category is how versatile the game options were to not only key binds, but all the options available. Things like loot filters, minimap options, cursor options, there is so much quality-of-life her that it’s amazing. I didn’t notice any major bugs. 1440p @ 240hz | installed on SSD Audio – Nothing great here, there’s music, it’s present but not really noticeable. There is some voice acting for certain parts, like for boss intros, it sounds okay. Replay Factor (Longevity) – Very good. A single run through the campaign will take you around ~15 hours. You can then spend dozens of hours on endgame perfecting your character and build. There is also 5 different classes. There are some overlap between them, but generally they are unique enough to warrant testing different builds and setups. The big thing that this game lacks is a seasonal component and leaderboards. I can overlook the leaderboards, but the seasonal thing is pretty intrinsic to ARPGs, so I’m disappointed to not have some sort of option for a refresh/new content every few months. Final Verdict – Chronicon is an ARPG that was developed by a single person, and despite the incredibly small dev team, manages to do so many things right, things that other, bigger, ARPGs often miss. This tells me that the developer knows what makes a good ARPG and plays/enjoys these types of games. This makes Chronicon pure joy the play. Chronicon offers all the foundational elements of ARPGs that the big names do, like Path of Exile, but also respects the players time through many quality-of-life features. You can change your build and respec at any time, for no currency cost. There is a loot filter, there’s auto loot, there’s great loot design with set bonuses. This is a game that promotes experimentation and fun. But Chronicon does have some shortcomings. The story is fairly pointless, the graphics are pretty terrible, and many of the zones are too large and easy to get lost in while being hard to navigate. Most of those are pretty small complaints, but my biggest one would be the lack of longevity related to leagues or seasons. Chronicon missed a great opportunity to have seasonal resets every few months. Overall, this is an easy recommendation. To me, the base game is scores better than the big names, like Diablo 4, it’s just missing some additional support that would make it a truly great experience. But still, the base game is the perfect experience for ARPG veterans and newcomers alike. Recommend? (Price) [Y/N] Yes $14 is a good price point for the amount of content available.
