Vagante is an amazingly unfair game. While it gives you a challenging and punishing set of enemies, bosses, and 'puzzles' to go up against with rng spilled across almost every corner, there is not much to reward you for adapting to it's unforgiving mechanics. That may sound like a bad thing but that is what makes it so unique as well. Each mechanic in this game is clunky and rigid. Your spells, ranged and even melee attacks take time to set up. Some bosses require some foresight in order to even have a chance, some you can/must rush down without a care. Potions and scrolls change colors every time, so there is no prior knowledge there that you can take from your past experiences to better your next run. Map generation can either be really interesting, really unfair, or just straight bugged. Instant death traps are always soul crushing. a LOT of bosses and enemies deal so much damage that with your limited health supply it doesnt leave much room for mistakes. Some upgrades for characters feel absolutely useless. Whenever a stat is gained, the change is so small for how little upgrades you actually get (on average). Some bosses feel unfinished or not thought out entirely, ESPECIALLY in hard mode. (Im looking at you mushroom golem) The mage being the only one to mix potions feels unfair to the rest of the characters when you get them so often while identify scrolls can be scarce. But i love it for all those reasons. it's in this strange spot where it feels like an old quarter-eating machine. Its brutal and unforgiving but just as fun and addicting, each time you lose you just wanna go at it again. There is no story as to why you the player must fight through creature filled dungeons with death traps around every corner. Its because YOU want to, you have the desire to beat this dungeon, to learn and prove that you can overcome any challenge it has in store.

Genuinely overlooked roguelite with a fleshed out levelling system and all of the cruel-but-fair fun of games like Spelunky. This game has a charm that is both addicting and infectious; every secret mechanic you and your friends discover is a euphoric revelation in itself, and is best enjoyed without outside information.

it's a good rogue-like with rpg elements, it clearly takes a bit of inspiration from games like spelunky, but not in an overbearing way, it is still very unique and has plenty of content to mess around with, all the different classes have their own abilities and stats, and each level has an optional bossfight that gives you the levels to invest in your class's skills I do recommend this game despite its difficulty and level generation sometimes screwing you over (bosses spawning in very cramped rooms you can't possibly figh them, happened with me once or twice)

I was shocked to see that this game had dropped to recent mixed reviews. This game is such a love letter to the sensibilities of roguelikes of old. It is punishing, it is fair, it is cruel. Instant-kill boulders and spikes are very much not the biggest threats in this game, but they do absolutely set the tone. Looking at the "more like this" section for steam has me kind of taken aback. It has games like hades, dead cells, binding of isaac, enter the gungeon. This game is....not like those games. This game is much more like unexplored, nethack, spelunky. It is puzzling, slow, methodical. I wholeheartedly recommend this game, especially if it's something you're willing to spend a longer period of time with. I couldn't put my finger entirely on why, but Vagante is a game that I just keep coming back to again and again.

Vagante is perfect in the sense that coming home from working in the coal mines is perfect. It's brutal, deadly. But in the end it's all worth it :). (Also putting this review so that the recent isn't mixed because the game doesn't deserve it and it's great)
