April 2025
Voidwrought is a visually striking, atmospheric action-adventure that, while intriguing on the surface, repeatedly stumbles over frustrating design choices and pacing issues that hold it back from greatness. Let’s start with travel. The fast travel system in this game is bafflingly slow — around six seconds per use — and considering the constant backtracking , this quickly becomes a noticeable drag on the experience. And backtrack you will, over and over, thanks to a map system that starts out promising by indicating your next objective but drops that feature entirely after the second boss. From there, it’s a guessing game where you mark countless spots on the map, hoping you'll remember which was which when you eventually get the required ability. Even when an NPC later marks a few locations for you, it feels more like a token gesture than meaningful guidance. Combat is another mixed bag. At the start, your damage output is pitiful. Enemies take five or more hits to kill , which is unacceptable for a first impression. While things improve as you find upgrades, combat hovers between "fine" and "annoying" — never quite reaching satisfying. The small melee range exacerbates this, especially when dealing with enemies that explode or are surrounded by poison gas, which forces the player to either trade hits or resort to spells. Boss fights suffer similarly; with how close you need to get to deal damage, some of their attacks feel nearly impossible to avoid, with little room for counterplay outside of sheer patience. Enemy variety is one of the game’s better points, and it’s appreciated because you’ll revisit areas constantly. Unfortunately, aberration encounters (mini-boss fights) are disappointing. Most of them throw two weak, poorly designed enemies at you instead of one memorable encounter. Unsurprisingly, their attack patterns desynchronize and you’re left playing the waiting game. Mechanically, the game can feel like it’s actively wasting your time. Elevators crawl at a glacial pace. The slither ability — one of the traversal upgrades — is slow and awkward. Even mundane things like opening certain doors involve pointless QTEs where you mash the attack button. It’s all filler — tedious padding that feels like it should’ve been caught in QA. The vault puzzles are easily one of the worst mechanics here. Puzzles in non-puzzle games often feel shoehorned in, and this is no exception. Unfortunately, these are tied to damage upgrades, so skipping them isn’t an option. It’s a frustrating, irrelevant hurdle between you and the improvements that make the combat tolerable. To its credit, Voidwrought looks fantastic and sounds even better. The art direction and music are genuinely standout — if you value a dark, moody atmosphere and enjoy uncovering lore, there’s something worthwhile here. Movement, too, improves later on once you collect a decent set of upgrades, and it feels good when you’re actually progressing through new content. I finished the game in 7.5 hours — and I probably thoroughly enjoyed about 4 of those. I left behind an entire ability and plenty of collectibles, but I felt I’d seen enough. It’s hard to recommend Voidwrought without caveats. If you come for the exploration, art, and audio, you’ll probably find those worthwhile. But if you’re hoping for a combat-driven experience that feels consistently rewarding and tight, this game misses the mark. The combat is there, but it’s merely serviceable, and sometimes even a chore. Final Verdict: A beautifully atmospheric game marred by clunky, unbalanced combat, needless filler mechanics, and irritating pacing issues.

Summary: Voidwrought is a 2D action-platformer inspired by similar souls-like metroidvania games, and developed by Powersnake. Taking place in a hand-drawn world of cosmic horrors, you play as a shapeshifting protagonist on a mission to dethrone a lineup of false gods who apparently all missed the memo on staying in their divine lanes. But it’s not all smiting and slicing; you also get to expand your very own shrine, because who doesn’t want a cosy cult base for your loyal, slightly unhinged followers? With smooth controls and customisable playstyle, Voidwrought satisfies the thirst for those looking to explore yet another fascinating labyrinth in the metroidvania subgenre. Gameplay | The Experience: Rating: ★★★★☆ The game is fast-paced, action-platforming at its finest, where you’ll dash, leap, and cling to walls like a caffeinated spider. With multiple multidimensional worlds being your playground, every nook and cranny could lead to a hidden treasure or secret room, making the exploration aspect of the game one of my personal favourites. Additionally, there’s dozens of collectible artefacts to choose from to support your playstyle, but once you reach the mid-game, the overall difficulty takes a nosedive. Nevertheless, between slaying false gods and digging up rubble to expand your shrine, Voidwrought offers an entertaining experience—even if it gets a little too comfy later on. Graphics | The Visuals: Rating: ★★★★★ Voidwrought stuns with its hand-drawn aesthetic, blending eerie beauty with cosmic horror in every frame. From the opulent, corrupted Court to the chilling depths of the Old Waters and the grim leftovers of the Abandoned Expedition, every area is a visual gut-punch. The game also serves up a collection of eerie enemies that could be straight out of your darkest nightmares—or your weirdest art class. Honestly, the world of Voidwrought is like exploring a haunted art gallery where every exhibit might try to kill you—and you’ll love every second of it. Sound | The Music: Rating: ★★★★★ The beautiful and spine-chilling soundtrack in Voidwrought also enhances the game’s overall atmosphere. From the sinister hums of exploration to the heart-pounding battle themes, it’ll make you feel like you’re living in a nightmare... but a really well-composed one. It’s like your own personal soundtrack to existential dread, with music that pulls you deeper into the void. Story | The Feels: Rating: ★★☆☆☆ With deep lore filled with forgotten gods and doomed expeditions, the world of Voidwrought feels like a dark fantasy mystery novel you can’t put down—if only you had all the chapters. Its backstory is well written but cryptic, and the main story itself is a bit… elusive. With no clear narrative to follow, you’ll often find yourself wandering a lonely, desolate world, piecing things together like a detective without a case. Furthermore, the characters each carry a sense of mystery, with unique designs and backgrounds that spark curiosity. However, despite their potential, these characters are often underexplored with limited dialogue and involvement in the main story. Overall, while the lore is intriguing at best, the lack of a concrete storyline can leave the experience feeling empty and detached. Replayability | The Value: Rating: ★★★☆☆ Voidwrought took me about 12 hours to reach the true ending, which, compared to other games in the genre, feels a bit like leaving a buffet just as you’re getting started. There’s no New Game Plus yet, but if you’re the kind who loves tinkering with different playstyles or making different choices in side quests by starting a brand new run, there’s some replay value to dig into. As a proud completionist, I squeezed an extra 8 hours out of the game by scouring every dark corner and crevice, which I honestly found to be an enjoyable aspect of the game. Now, considering its cost and playtime, I’d say it’s worth it even at full price—especially with plans for new content on the horizon. Final Thoughts: As a fast-paced action-platformer, Voidwrought excels in diving headfirst into cosmic horror with its solid gameplay, stunning visuals, and a mesmerising soundtrack. The combat is slick, the customisation is satisfying, and the lore is well written—though the main story is about as clear as a foggy abyss. While the mid-game difficulty takes an unexpected coffee break and some fascinating characters don’t get their time to shine, there’s still plenty to love for metroidvania fans, especially if you enjoy searching for hidden treasure in every corner of a beautifully-crafted world. Short but packed with potential, Voidwrought earns a thumbs up from me. Overall Rating: ★★★★☆

Review After 100% Achievements Killer art direction and music with this one! Bosses are fun, overall a pretty easy metroidvania in terms of the ability to become powerful pretty quickly. If you need to satisfy that Hollow Knight itch, Voidwrought is the game for you. Tons of collectable achievements spread across a very big map. Movement and combat feel amazing after you pick up a few abilities. I really enjoyed the exploration and side quests, even though the game is on the shorter side it still offers a great gameplay experience! Had fun finding all the hidden secrets in this one and I’m just thankful for all the awesome metroidvanias we’ve been getting. This was made by a small dev team of a couple people…well done and I look forward to seeing what comes next. I just about 99% Voidwrought recently. (missing one item on the map because of tedious collectable tracking + extremely hidden breakable walls) A very good attempt of Hollow Knight wannable Metrodvania. The art and map design is good overall, but there is some pacing issue + frustration in the beginning~ mid point of the game. One core issue of this game is it's TOO OPEN in the beginning of the game. A good Metrodvania , like Hollow Knight, will start the game with a semi linear progression path , and branch out to open world AFTER they give you sufficient tools to traverse the world. In Hollow Knight's case, the normal pathing you'd take is Green Path -> Mentus Lord , which grant you access to air dash and wall climb . Unless you do some sequence break via poggling , you're are pretty much blocked off venturing into other Biomes UNTIL you go through Green Path and Mentus Lord. Dev make sure you have means to traverse the rest of the world. Voidwrath does not do that. Around 80% of the crucial traversal methods are either optional unlockable , or hidden at the edge of the world . I literally get Wall Climb and Double Jump after I already explored like 95% of the world already. This makes my whole exploration a tedium to get through obstacles because I simply don't have the tools to traverse the world, and lead to lots of needless backtracking. Sometimes I venture into couple biomes without any means to progress and have to just turn back multiple times. Also bosses become too easy later on because our weapon upgrade is too op and our character has way too much health. Healing is kinda weak in this game because you can't replenish the flask easily , and they don't heal much, so in return , dev just gives you so much health you can pretty much trade blows with bosses until they die , which take away all the challenge in the game. Some other minor issues including way too many extremely hidden breakable walls at very random spot with zero hint makes 100% completion super tedious . Charms locking to 3 without any method to expand the slot kills the diversity of the build . We should be able to expand the charm slot later on, but given the bosses are so weak, maybe that's not very necessary, but nevertheless a wasted potential . Relic has some balancing issues too, with around 20% very good and 80% completely pointless. Also no means to upgrade the damage of the relics too = another wasted potential. Overall this game gives me an enjoyable 20 hrs~ adventure , but with some tweaking and polishing, it could have been so much more.
