Sometimes the review writes itself in the chat window if you’ve got the right friend to pull it out (thanks, Vitlök!): – So, how's this vomit party game? Looks interesting but I can smell jank. – No, not at all, it's fast FPSing in a metroidvania setting, highly playable and really gripping, I had a blast with it. It's pretty short. Scumhead getting his sophisticated design legs. It announces his much more confident approach in Mohrta, but it's rather short and not very involved. I would have loved more of it, frankly. It exudes copious amounts of creativity despite the limitations, very similarly to Mohrta in this regard. – Aaaaaaaalright, consider me a bit more convinced hah. – It's a five-hour game at the very most, not a big time investment. – 5 hours can be a blink of an eye or an excruciating eternity, depending on the game. – Now you're getting philosophical and there's really no need for that in this case. :) – No, I'm serious!... but I see what you're saying. – Well, let me put it this way, then: it has fast FPS action, creatively interconnected world, fun exploring abilities (you can regress to your foetal form, how about that?), lots of secrets, NPCs to wax narrative with, and a full short self-contained story that's nicely told, to carry you forward. Plus, monsters don't repeat themselves nauseatingly and the boss fights are fun and not too punishing. Nothing excruciating about it. Also, there’s no ammo management (weapons have unlimited ammo), there’s no fall damage, it has a very generous save system that restores your status Dark Souls-style, but without respawning the monsters around you, everything is simple and straightforward, distilled with a single purpose in mind: FUN! Something like that, ha ha! You're turning me into a salesman with your scepticism. :) – Hahah. Isn't that's what reviews are for? :) But alright, that's quite a pitch! – Ha ha, thank you! I hope it did the job! LATER EDIT: And it did the job indeed! :) Here's the link to Vitlök's fantastic review: https://steamcommunity.com/id/witols/recommended/1549750/

This is a bad game. It feels like it was made purely for the joy of creation, driven by the idea of what the game should be - rather than what it actually was. Like, it's made by someone who shouldn't make games. But they didn't get the memo, and made it anyway. And thank the stars for that, because this game is a delightful experience. It's very much a first person Metroidvania - and it certainly plays like one. The world feels large without actually being clumsily huge, it offers good interconnectedness with no fast travel; and the top-down Doom style map really helps out with exploration. Vomitoreum has a strange relationship with combat. There is no ammunition whatsoever: all your weapons can fire indefinitely. No reloading needed, either. I actually liked this. Another unusual thing is that once you kill something, it stays dead. No respawns on saving or leaving the area (not that you can leave the area, the world is seamlessly connected in a single map). So backtracking is boring... right? Not necessarily. The areas and rooms are mechanically small, but visually large: this means that you'll often have some kind of vista to look at while travelling. The world is detailed and strange enough that observing the weird surroundings takes combat's role as a way to sweeten up traversal. Of course, you'll still have to fight through the new areas, but is the combat actually good? Kind of? Again, mechanically not really, but there's enough aesthetic variety that your "What the unholy F-" senses will be doing all the work. So it's still fun, even if it's "bad". One area in particular has enemies that tie excellently into the story's upcoming twist; a tense and engaging moment. Mechanical complexity be damned, it's good stuff. The bosses are a different story. They all have a theme and there's even some dialogue here and there, but they're either easy or bothersome; never truly difficult. The final boss has a small amount of strategy involved in the sense that just circlestrafing will not work, you need to do gasp something else. But I don't care! Do you care? You shouldn't. I'm the first person to fire a game into the sun for having bad gameplay, but in this case it's not bad. Even if it is. I... look. Friction is bad, until it's good. Can you imagine doing anything without friction? Holding a fork? Walking? Having sex? The trick is where the friction is to be applied. Vomitoreum applies it in places you'd normally not expect, while smoothing out the other parts. And of course, this goes without saying: the game's aesthetic is where it's at. Wonderful body horror mixed with Christian and sexual imagery - hell yeah. Unfortunately, the story requires both some curiosity and a degree of being able to read between the lines to make sense; the last third is going to very disjointed and maybe even nonsensical otherwise. I liked it - even if I'm not entirely sure if my interpretation is correct... It's a strange, acquired taste-type experience. Not for everyone. Glad to have a friend who got me to play this! Vomitoreum is a great experience but a pretty weak shooter. The exploration is very rewarding thanks to a good diversity of environments and an unusual art direction. The way your moveset expands is also nice, and the map is designed to loop back onto itself in neat ways, Sadly the FPS combat is without challenge and very forgettable, more or less every boss can be beaten by circle strafing and holding M1. The story is simple but i loved its presentation and tone. A couple of well made cutscenes paired with good music and sound design can go a long way, as it turns out.

Finally a game that dares to ask “what if Metroid Prime took place on a single massive DooM map and was also extremely goopy?”

Rough around the edges and the shooter elements are a little simplistic, but definitely scratches the metroidvania itch while giving you a very well realized world to explore and learn about.
