Truly an Underrated and Underlooked title, If you couldnt stand the old Fallout 1 & 2 games but you really want a Narrative Top-Down XCOM Turn-based style combat then look no further, this is pretty much the modern take of it all with its own brand, the jokes are almost similar in how dark humor is treated, its a serious but wild wasteland where strange things can happen, with the main goal being to assist the region and seize it for the Arizona Rangers, you'll find yourself fighting against the unexpected. It has that Larian Studios (Baldur's Gate / Divinity Sin) feel in its gameplay, its a whole story narrated for you, going from point A to point B, there is a point where you can unlock the World Map and go where ever you want, but there is a Main Story is follow, and along that way you'll be able to unlock Companions and build up to a party of 6 people (Including your 2 Starter Characters), Make sure to pick your Rangers wisely, You'll definitely want to set up a composition of various specialites, you may want a Medic on the team of course, but what about a Demolitionist that can deal with Crowds?... a Science geek that knows their way around Energy Weapons and Craft special recipes?.. How does a Mechnical Robot Expert sound? This game has multiple roles but a tight squad you'll have to roll with throughout the game, In my playthrough, my first one, we had a; Designated Leader with High Charisma who can boost everyone with a buff, A Heavy Gunner, Gunslinger, Medic, Melee Expert and Some crazy guy we let tag along As a narrative, this game gives you choices.. a vast amount of them, usually decisions that are not inheritly good and evil... although you can be a total prick doing so or keep looking the other way when its something thats not entirely your business, its that wonderful RPG dialogue where your stats can affect conversations, theres specifically a Kiss Ass or Hard Ass stat where you can chat someone up or chat someone down which unlocks skipping certain fights.. Oh! And the best part about skipping fights is you get allll the exp rewarded to you if you were to be in a fighting situation with any NPCs involved! So theres no feeling like you have to erradicate everyone you see just to level up. I do recommend giving this game a shot when its on Sale! It even has a Co-op mode which is where most of the fun resides in! But solo is just as good if you want to immerse yourself in a dark goofy adventure, I would love to see a sequel to this game or even a Spin-off but i wouldnt hold my breath for it.
The Wasteland franchise... somewhere in-between, Fallout was birthed from Wasteland's limb, lifeless body and completely outgrew the mother game from whence it hellspawned. And thus, Wasteland was forgotten despite WL3 carrying forward everything that made Fallout great in the first place. Wasteland 3 is a blast. Don't sleep on it! I was shocked by how good it is. I wasn't part of the Kickstarter campaign and yet remain convinced this must have delivered on almost everything it promised. It's raucous fun, campy as hell, combat is hugely improved from Wasteland 2 (or so I hear) and super enjoyable, speaking as a big isometric RPG fan. The story is good, player decisions actually matter and the character designs have a recognizability to them that I thought lost to the 90ies (yeah, I'm that old). In fact, the way players can solve missions differently reminds me of ye olden golden Deus Ex, holy grail among games, at least to a degree. That's a big honor to bestow. The music is great. The whole game is a labor of love, even around its rougher edges this shows. On a tangent, it's also refreshing to see an apocalyptic setting in the cold north that isn't Eastern-European and gives you slav boi depression. You will like this if you liked... - Fallout New Vegas (EXPLICITLY New Vegas! Fallout in general doesn't count. Peak knows peak.) - Any game made by Obsidian, really - The Mel Gibson Mad Max movies (Wasteland has cartoonishly evil factions reminiscent of the gangs, Fallout can be disappointing faction-wise) - XCOM - Any game that features a vehicle that's also, somehow, a character. Fun fact: I was blown away by the cynical product placements in the game. You can eat Snickers. There's something so audaciously funny and arrogant about the fact the developers just put it there because you can't really copyright the word.
"Every monster was a human first" Well, the Wasteland game series has a difficult fate. The original Wasteland became a starting point for post-apocalyptic RPG games. In our time, it's a product for "their own". And it's damn good. Mechanically, Wasteland 3 feels like any modern turn-based RPG. You might think it's extremely casual, but just be thankful that Wasteland no longer turns you around with its huge number of mechanics and percentages of success when you take any action. Seriously. Wasteland 3 is still a real Klondike of stories, mechanics, role-playing, and exploration of the world. The atmosphere here resembles a kind of mixture of a classic wasteland experience adjacent to the total hopelessness of Frostpunk. If you think that top-view games can't convey an atmosphere, you're very wrong. The memorable tracks and ambient of the locations only emphasize this. And despite all the darkness, Wasteland 3 never loses its sense of dark humor. One moment you're deciding the fate of a cult, the next you're fighting killer robots alongside a communist AI version of Ronald Reagan. This game is absurd, and it knows it. The level design has become noticeably cooler than in the second part. Even on the world map, you are now moving on a specially equipped car, which can also be used in battle in an open area. The interface also became much better and more convenient. The storyline is, on the one hand, simple at first glance, but for the sake of the genre, it can become absurdly interesting. Believe me, it may surprise you. But there will always be a problem, and Wasteland 3 is no exception. The game is not in the best technical condition, and sometimes you have to load a save or restart the game to solve them. Be prepared that in the final location, all these small flaws will begin to seriously interfere. There is a feeling that Yuma County Speedway was made in a great hurry, and on the way to minor bugs, there are very noticeable remnants of cut dialogues, etc. In conclusion, I want to say that Wasteland 3 is not only a triquel of the cult first part, but also a worthy representative of modern RPGs in general. __________________________ «Каждый монстр сначала был человеком» Что ж, у серии Wasteland непростая судьба. Игра находится не в самом лучшем техническом состоянии, и иногда приходится перезагружать сохранение или вовсе перезапускать игру, чтобы решить их. Будьте готовы, что на финальной локации все эти мелкие огрехи начнут серьёзно мешать. Есть ощущение, что Yuma County Speedway делалась в огромной спешке, и по пути, к минорным багам там добавятся очень заметные остатки вырезанных диалогов и прочего контента. В заключение хочу сказать, что Wasteland 3 - это не только триквел культовой первой части, но и достойный представитель современных RPG в целом.
This game is almost wholly responsible for me getting into CRPGs, its post-apocalyptic setting and story tone were immediate, while the gameplay reminded me of playing fallout 3 but from a top-down, isometric point of view and I could not get enough. Then came the knowledge that fallout was inspired by the original wasteland, that the isometric designs and party-based rpg was a WHOLE GENRE. Haven't looked back, thanks Inexile
