XIII Classic (originally released 2003) is a first-person shooter based on the Belgian spy graphic novel series. Generally speaking, the game is more an action than a sneak game in my opinion, mostly due to mechanics and balancing issues, with a distinct style. The story evolves around the main character (XIII) who wakes up at a beach with amnesia and tries to recover the knowledge about himself. Just shortly after waking up and being helped to the next life guard station, the character is getting attacked and drawn into a mission to investigate a high-level conspiracy. Although the setting and style are refreshing, the game is lacking considerably in its finishing. After about 10 hours of play time in a normal approach, here’s my pros/cons list: Pros: ++ great, refreshing graphic novel style is well implemented (later somewhat copied e.g. by Borderlands) + graphics look good, even today due to the unique graphic novel style + Kennedy assassination similarities make it intriguing + intriguing start at the beach + flash-backs well done to peer into the character’s obscure past + general spy theme + unique, dynamic soundtrack + diverse levels + level design and environmental details well done for a game back then + skill overview to hint at what the character can do as well as potential play style (maybe meant to be a skill system with level ups, but scrapped) + cliff-hanger ending + after installing the unofficial patch 1.5, the old game is running well on modern systems (except the mouse issue in the game menu which can be circumvented by using arrows on the keyboard to navigate) Cons: -- Save system very annoying, the game will only remember certain checkpoints, which are usually very far apart, resulting in lots of mission retries and thus artificially stretching play time. At the same time missing an autosave functionality making it necessary for the player to manually save after all - Very slow weapon / tool change - Sneak attack mechanics have some major flaws, feels unfinished resulting in botched KO or evade moves - Music is way too loud, drowning out dialogues and sound effects - Very repetitive tasks - Repetitive missions - Many times shooting your way through enemy groups actually easier, resulting player taking less damage than taking the sneak approach --> balancing / sneak mechanics issue - Super mediocre weapon aim for a highly trained special agent - Very cryptic starting video - Long time missing explanation why the player is going through the missions and to the different locations - Characters remain very shallow - Weak weapon sounds - Plot slow and boring about ¾ through the game - Ultimately, the story of a high-level political conspiracy is rather hackneyed - Cliff-hanger ending somewhat sudden and feels added last minute to incorporate a plot twist Conclusion: Although XIII has some interesting starting points for a good, unique game, it does have too many shortcomings in mechanics and shallowness in the plot as well as characters to leave a more profound impression. If you enjoy an FPS-game with some balancing issues and rough edges set in a graphic novel style combined with a bland conspiracy story, you will have a good time. I personally find it rather disappointing though that the developers could have made so much more with these foundations but fall short of it using its potential. Rating: 4/10 points

XIII is an amazing first-person shooter from 2003 and is already a classic. It still holds up well today. The story is told in comic style and the gameplay also has many comic elements, which works very well and makes the game unique. The soundtrack is very good and contributes to the special atmosphere of the game. It is a shame that we never got a sequel.

Xlll is a rare gem of classic fps/stealth with comic book frames based ironically on a comic book from the 80s where the protagonist finds himself with a forgotten memory and from the start he finds himself in a game of intrigue and conspiracy to find his identity. Unfortunately, the ending adds a string to a sequel that has never been made outside the comics. The composition is a top notch noir with a certain degree of elevation depending on the certainty of being stealthy or found. It's a determined and recommended classic, but given its ending you're left waiting for a reliable game sequel that will never make it to the big screen.
