Age of Reforging: Freelands is a plausible attempt to recreate Kenshi's "craft your own story" magic on a medieval fantasy foundation. The gameplay, especially in combat and world exploration, is a reminiscence to Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. The world map is populated by bandits, monsters, merchants, villagers, and soldiers that are constantly at odds with each others. You can of course take side with one of the belligerent in said conflicts, such as saving a group of poor villagers or helping bandits to rob them instead. You have all the usual cRPG stuff. Trading, crafting, sneaking, stealing, skill checks, murderhobo-ing.. all included. If you played PoE, pathfinder, divinity, and bg 3, you immediately understand what to do. This game has a lot of content for an early access game, and along with that, comes a lot of bugs and crashes. There is no voice acting. The story is.. serviceable. There is not much to say honestly. Just imagine Kenshi with a storyline. That said, this game is really hard. I say this in a kinda bad way. Some encounters are straight out both unavoidable and unwinable. I'm no stranger to hard games like Dark Souls and Kenshi, they are hard but fair because you can choose to avoid many problematic fights. In this game, you'll frequently find yourself in a situation where the only way out is to load the game. For example, some orc ambushes happens so fast, yet the mc runs like my grandma (he is neither encumbered nor debuffed). Orcs have 0% avoid rate early on, hence once you get caught in the world map, you are not allowed to flee from the battle area. The orcs outlevel and outnumber you a lot and with only 2 party members, there is nothing you can do aside from loading a save. You can micromanage, but the feature is pointless when the controls are extemely clunky and unresponsive. I had my character stood frozen mid fight because the game decided to cancel his aggro after killing one enemy. Having a 360 degree camera also introduces a lot of bugs like being unable to select some enemies at certain angle.. and often i selected the ground instead of the enemies, making my crossbowman rushes to the enemies instead of shooting them. UX is a mess right now. Thankfully these problems are not inherent to the core gameplay and should be easy to iron out by the devs, assuming they continue to support the game.

This is my second strange game discovery this year. The game is clearly rough around the edges, but it's an unusual and intriguing mix of story-driven CRPG and sandbox gameplay. You get large open-area maps with both main and side quests, often with choices and consequences, but you can also freely roam the world, take on random quests from towns, fight monsters, and clear dungeons. You can build reputation with factions, cities, or even individual NPCs — and that's great. The concept is fantastic, even if there's still a lot of work to be done. The combat system and character progression are surprisingly deep and well thought out — I love it. It’s a mix of spending experience points to unlock skills and stats, while also improving weapon proficiencies and attributes through use. Combat and character attacks rely on physical hitboxes, a bit like Kenshi. It's not perfect, but the underlying design is impressive. You can customize tactics for each character — choosing fighting styles (like aggressive or defensive), setting up automatic skill usage, controlling attack direction, and adjusting how close or far they stay from enemies in combat. There's so much depth here. The variety of monsters is also amazing. Of course, the game looks and runs pretty clunky. A lot of the assets seem to come from the Unity Asset Store, and there are plenty of bugs — but the developers are actively working on fixes. I was 100% hooked — I played for 74 hours in the first week alone. So if you enjoy sandbox RPGs and CRPG-style systems, give it a try. Maybe wait for a few more updates, but this game is a hidden gem — not for its visuals or performance, but for the brilliant ideas at its core.

If you enjoy Pathfinder/Baldur's Gate/Pillars of Eternity, you'll enjoy this. It's a bit rough around the edges, but what it is, is trying to take the best out of a bunch of CRPGs and put together. Just don't expect Baldur's Gate 3 levels of quality. Think baldur's gate 2 instead...

More to follow, currently level 55 on my main character and his party, still only halfway through the story. The game is terrific, truly, a complicated and at times, very difficult, CRPG. I feel like a kid playing the original BG1/2 again. I would certainly recommend this to any and all crpg fans. Bugs, misspelling, and Unity engine. Unity requires frequent game restarts, always have and it always will, there are still many many bugs that cause or require a crash to desktop. These are not game breaking, but they can be irritating for someone who has little patience.

So i have currently played about 50 hours of this game, so is this game fun? Well yes it is and if you liked Blackthorn arena you will probably like this game. Is the game buggy as of me writing this post, yes it most certanly is, but if you played alot of BtA you are probably pretty used to all the bugs and wonk from this dev. Would i recomend buying this game? Well that depends on how frustrated you get of buggy games, i personaly have 3 characters that i cant continue playing with since the saves corrupted. But to me personaly its not that frustrating since i always liked to try out new character builds and so on. But saying that of my 50 hours playing i probably have atleast 30 hours that i lost from save file corruption....
