Good game but doesn't itch my specific autism scratch. Has amazing potential but it's clearly tailored to a specific niche. I am not that niche.

Air Defender is to an ATC sim like Tower3D!, what MS Combat Flight Sim is to MS Flight Sim. Basically you are a military radar operator / air operations coordinator during the last days of the cold war. You're looking at a composite radar screen of the British Isles and the nearby European mainland, trying to determine if the contacts are incoming enemy aircraft trying to harm the nation. It is more of a simulation than you might expect - there's not much hand holding, and things mostly happen in real time. The actual display is a 2D composite radar display - think a lot of green to replicate a CRT - simulation with quite clunky controls that are no doubt reminiscent of the real thing So you'll see the map with a ton of tracks - mostly civilian - and start working through categorising them as "assumed friendly" for most civilian traffic, through "unknown" and "suspected hostile". To get confirmation of hostility, you may launch interceptors to ID the aircraft, if necessary warn it to leave UK airspace, and escalate all the way up to engaging the enemy if they don't respond, or show hostile intent. The enemy will sometimes be obvious - approach from the North Atlantic without the correct squawk or any kind of flight planned route. Other times they'll spoof the system and try to infiltrate UK airspace by looking like a legit civilian operator. So this will require the player to investigate tracks and look for irregularities but I will say at this stage the irregularities are seemingly quite obvious to spot once you're looking at a track. This is complicated more by the sheer volume of tracks to look at rather than analysing the data itself. In addition to initiating and managing fighter intercepts, there's mid air refuelling of those interceptors to consider, movement of supplies and aircraft around the UK to place them for best effect, AWACS aircraft and a few other management features. Also to investigate an aircraft, there is a rudimentary way of contacting civvie ATC units to enquire about tracks that are suspicious. While doing this, there is a limited but very effective amount of voice acting already that nicely fills in the imagination gap about what is going on out beyond your radar display. You'll here interceptors launch and then progress their intercept procedures and a few other radio calls. But - its EA. So there are bugs and inconsistencies - it's playable but some of these bugs in the UI do get frustrating. There's also a distinct lack of QOL features - as I emntiuoed the civilian ATC interface is just a basic set of commands to type in to a text box and that process gets old quickly. The voice acting I mentioned is very limited too - I really wish there was more of this because it adds so much to the atmosphere. It's also more of a sim - not a game. For me that's awesome, there are plenty of games about apocalyptic outcomes, I like the focus on a single aspect here. But if you're wanting more of an RTS game or a dry logistic strategy this isn't it. What I'd like to see developed? At the moment it seems to be very cold war focused. I'm sure a lot of the day of a cold war radar operator was indeed spent looking for Ivan's Bombers. But I'd like to see some more general stuff going on like civilian emergencies, maybe even a hijack, some civilian SAR coordination, and that kind of thing. The engagements at the moment are quite dry - do the intercept and get a basic ID. This is quite limited at the moment - I'd like to see and hear more from the pilots about the contact they're intercepting. And if it gets all the way to engaging in combat, how about some CSAR to pick up survivors? And while we're at it, focus on the Sim aspects in terms of the radar and display functions. Are there some failures that can be modelled? Jamming? Stealth aircraft? Things that may require the player to delve into the technicalities. Anyway, If what I've described sounds interesting take a look. I think it could be a really great addition to the sim scene and something which is unique for what it simulates.
Air Defender, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
EDIT: 12/1 - Many of the issues in this review are now patched! You can now complete the training missions. There are some issues that persist, but the developer is making steady progress to solve them. I stand by my original recommendation, and when these bugs are resolved this game will be a classic! The Good - This is an immersive game. The graphics are simple, but period plausible, and the audio is a treat. The whole game is a pleasure to play, even with what follows in this review. Once fixed, I expect this game to become a classic in the ATC genre. Mission are also varied, not scripted, which provides high replayability. The Bad - Some things are unintuitive. Tooltips may help. The tutorials cover a lot of items, but it is easy to forget important details, so you end up doing the tutorials more than once. Tanker tracks are a pain to set up, with the track starting off map for some reason. Once airborne, the tankers do not do anything. A couple of the tutorials cannot be passed as a result. The voices are excellent! However, there needs to be several more versions of the same voiceover, to make it less repetitive. Ordering up a tanker and being told to "get it sorted" in the same voice, with the exact same words, ends up subtracting from one of the game's strengths. The Ugly - Some stuff just does not work, tankers in particular. In addition, fighters seems to scream to their caps and intercepts, so they burn all their fuel quickly. This is somewhat realistic, since combat aircraft have far less range than people realize. This is also why they require tanker support. But it would be helpful if they could manage their speed and altitude better to conserve fuel. High altitude and reduced throttle saves fuel and extends range. These options should be included, even if abstracted as a simple instruction. Tearing across the UK at supersonic speed isn't practical if you burn all your fuel and cannot make the intercept. - L11 mode does not work. - I am not sure AWACS is working. TL/DR: I enthusiastically recommend this game! Although in its present state it is a little difficult to play, the issues are entirely fixable, and once done it has incredible potential to be a classic in the ATC/wargame genre. Indeed, there is nothing quite like it, and it plays realistically, which is a refreshing development.

As-is, its buggy as hell and you'll probably need to complete every tutorial and watch the developer videos that go into further detail to have any idea what you're doing when the game is actually working. This is still an early access game from an indie dev that's barely been out for two days. It's got great bones and what I can play is fantastic and such a unique concept. I'm glad I gave this guy the $20 and look forward to seeing where things go.

EA just dropped and I’m already blown away. I’ve been following this game for months, and after 30 minutes in Early Access I can say it’s exactly what I hoped for. Air Defender nails the air-defence vibe. It scratches the itch you've never known you had. It’s early, rough in places, and clearly still growing, but the foundation is fantastic. Even now, the depth is surprising. If you’re into aviation or strategic sims, this is absolutely one to watch!
