We play this together with my son. And we both love it. It is a classic RPG system, the world is fun and if it gets to the level of complexity as its predecesor (Exiled Kingdoms) then tons of fun.

Quite a strong EA entry, at this point in time. I am struck by the fact that David has chosen to use the same Exiled Kingdoms game font. Made me go back and play Exiled Kingdoms on my GOG account ... So far, I am really enjoying this game. I especially like the fact that Archaelund takes place in the same game world as Exiled Kingdoms. Will keep putting in time on Archaelund here and there until 1.0.

Archaelund: A Blend of Old-School and Modern RPGs Archaelund combines both old-school and modern RPG elements, leaning more toward the classic side. It will remind you of older games like Morrowind, but with some modern features. The game uses a first-person view for exploring and interacting with the world, but combat is turn-based on a tactical grid. This mix might feel strange at first, but I think it works well because it makes exploration more immersive while still allowing for strategic combat. Combat & Exploration Exploring the world in first-person feels immersive, and the turn-based combat, which uses Action Points (like the original Fallout games), lets you plan your moves. This approach avoids the "pause-to-plan" combat systems seen in games like Pillars of Eternity, giving you more control over both exploration and battle. The game uses a d100 system (a 100-sided dice) for actions and combat. It can be confusing at first, but you don’t need to fully understand it to play. The combat feels like a tabletop RPG, more so if you are used to a d100 system. My two cents for playing - Make sure to check how stats affect your character by looking at the panel on the right. It’s important to understand these changes to build a character capable of doing something. - Skills are very important, some even almost necessary (like Crafting and Alchemy) so plan accordingly. - It’s a good idea to start combat on your own terms by using the environment to your advantage, such as setting up at choke points. Starting combat gives you a initiative boost for turn order, so that alone can be worth it. - Use abilities like Defend (which boosts your dodge chance) and Guard (which lets you prepare an attack for when enemies come close). This can help protect ranged characters and give you an advantage. Where Archaelund Needs Improvement Even though the game has many good features, there are several areas that need work: - The game has many classes, but most feel too similar. It would be better if some were combined or simplified to avoid confusion. - The level cap is 5, and casters feel weak. When their spells run out, they can’t deal much damage and are too weak in close combat. Adding simple damage spells (like cantrips in D&D or Pathfinder) could help, so casters aren't useless once their spells are gone but are not too powerful. - Skill checks are too punishing. For example, if your character isn’t skilled in lockpicking, it’s almost impossible to succeed. Failing these checks can stop you from progressing, like blocking "fast travel". While you can reload saves, it feels like a cheap fix rather than a good system. - The game relies mostly on traveling on foot. There are some fast travel options, like yellow orbs and ships, but they’re limited. The real problem is that enemies don’t respawn and there is nothing else to do once explored and area, so if you need to travel back and forth, it can feel like a waste of time. A better system, like the signposts in The Witcher 3, would make traveling less boring, bringing you in a certain region but without a cheap fast travel system (like the one in Skyrim, where you can teleport wherever you want). - The loading times are a big issue. In the overworld, it can take several minutes to load, which is frustrating. Reducing these loading times would help make the game feel more smooth. My final thoughts Despite these problems, I really enjoy Archaelund. It does a great job of mixing old-school RPG elements with modern features. But for it to become even better, the issues mentioned above—especially those with combat balance, fast travel, and loading times—need to be fixed in future updates.

Splattercat brought me here, and I am incredibly excited to see where this one goes. There is something special about creating a party to adventure with, especially when the diversity of options when creating said party is as high as this one. The exploration to combat loop is very engaging, and with some more polish it will be a great game.

20% jank, 80% sovl. In many ways, a spiritual successor to Realms of Arkania: the combat is not tactically deep* at this stage, but the game puts a lot of emphasis on exploration and character skills in the open world. *when compared to ToEE/KotC, I mean. It is certainly deeper than many turn-based RPGs from the last 10-15 years. P.S.: Had no CTDs in my 50 hours playing it, which is fantastic for an EA title.
