It was originally a DLC for Black Flag, which was made independent to allow its content to be accessed without owning the original game. Here, we find Edward Kenway's second-in-command, Adewale, as the main character, embarking on an adventure to liberate the slaves in the region. Unsurprisingly, it uses the Black Flag game engine, since it was originally a DLC. The graphics remain stunning despite the passage of time, and the game offers beautiful landscapes both on land and at sea. The game follows the Black Flag formula, with part of the adventure taking place on land and the other part on the oceans. The game features numerous dynamic events related to the liberation of slaves. These events repeat regularly, allowing players to "farm" liberations to unlock the main missions. The game area is smaller, allowing us to freely explore various locations to liberate different plantations and slave ships. Depending on the number of slaves freed, we will unlock upgrades for our equipment and ship. The adventure will take 10 to 15 hours to complete, depending on whether you want to unlock all the achievements or not. Ultimately, it's an adventure set in the Assassin's Creed Black Flag universe, primarily focused on liberating slaves. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3744052272

what was meant to be (and also, still is) a dlc expansion for ac4 black flag is now sold as a 12 dollar game on steam, gotta love ubisoft for their shenanigans. apart from that, it's not a bad game to play. it's just not that very interesting or different. 4 hours of stripped down assassin's creed 4.

I mean its alright, just buy the black flag gold edition and don't get this as a standalone game. You get to play as Edward's buff quartermaster Adewale and it's pretty short, didn't hate nor really like the story. I guess a 6/10?

This game is a dlc and a sequel for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag...However the purchase of this version is more likely for have this unique game as a standalone game as if you buy season pass/Gold Edition for Black Flag ..you will have this game...but is still nice to have it and play/replay it. Adewale is one of the best assassin ever ...from a slave to a fearsome assassin... Brand new story that is happening after 15 years since events of Black Flag Gameplay is same as Black Flag ..which is of course very fun.. awesome and unique...difference ..the new charm of this new experience of the world from Adewale's eyes .. Don't purchase this only if you didn't bought Gold Edition or Seasson Pass of Black Flag...if you did and want add new game to collection ...do it ..your money :)

As much as I wanted to love this game, it’s hard to ignore that Freedom Cry isn’t a full-fledged experience it’s very clearly a DLC, and the limited scope shows. The content feels short and somewhat padded, which makes it difficult for the story to fully explore the powerful themes it introduces. There was a real opportunity here to deliver a deeper narrative about slavery, freedom, and resistance and while the game touches on these ideas, it never really gets the time to develop them in a meaningful way. The emotional weight is there, but it’s spread too thin across a campaign that’s over almost as soon as it starts. Progression is also held back by the need to upgrade your ship before you can advance certain missions, which feels more like filler than genuine progression. That kind of design made sense in Black Flag, where you had a massive world to explore, but here it feels like an artificial way to stretch out the runtime. It’s still awesome to play as Adéwalé. His brutal combat style, his presence, and the way he fights with raw power make him one of the most memorable characters in the series. The blunderbuss in particular is an absolute blast to use literally. The finisher animations, the sense of strength, and the sheer ferocity of his attacks all give him a unique edge that stands out from Edward Kenway or other assassins besides Connor of course. Visually, the Caribbean setting remains beautiful, and the music still nails that Assassin’s Creed IV atmosphere. If you enjoyed Black Flag and just want more of its gameplay with a darker tone, this expansion delivers that. If you can grab it on a deep discount, it’s definitely worth a try.
