The Most Underrated Masterpiece in the Series As an AC series lover I must say that Assassin's Creed Rogue is the most underrated game in the entire franchise. If you liked Black Flag, you will definitely enjoy this one too. Why you should play it: [*] Amazing Story : This game shows the "other side" of the war. You play as Shay Patrick Cormac, a former Assassin who joins the Templars. [*] Deep Character : The internal conflict of Shay is written very well. You really feel his pain and his reasons for changing sides. It’s not just "good vs. evil"; it’s much more complex. [*] Fun Gameplay : The gameplay is almost the same as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. If you love sailing ships, exploring cold oceans, and naval combat, this is perfect for you. [*] Great Atmosphere : Exploring the icy waters of the North Atlantic is beautiful and feels different from the Caribbean. [*] Impressive Musics : The music is truly impressive and fits the exciting moments of the game perfectly. These powerful melodies get stuck in your head and make the action feel much more intense. I played Assassin's Creed Rogue for about 50 hours and completed the game 100%. For me, this is one of the most unusual parts of the Assassin's Creed series, because here the plot literally turns the usual game formula upside down. In most parts, we play as assassins and automatically consider them to be the right side of the conflict. In Rogue, it's the opposite. The main character, Shay Cormac, starts out as an assassin, but after certain events, he completely changes sides and starts hunting his own order. Because of this, the whole story feels different: the Assassins no longer seem unambiguously good, and the Templars unambiguously bad. In terms of gameplay, the game is very similar to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Once again, there is open-world exploration, sea voyages, and battles on the ship Morrigan. But the atmosphere is different: instead of the warm Caribbean islands, there are the cold waters of the North Atlantic, icy shores, and icebergs. Naval battles remain one of the most interesting parts of the game, especially when you have to maneuver among the ice or ambush enemy ships. Interestingly, the developers left very small details in the game that connect Rogue with Assassin's Creed Unity, and many players simply don't notice them. The final mission takes place in Versailles, where Shay carries out a mission against an assassin — this person turns out to be the father of Arno Dorian, the main character of Unity. In fact, this event becomes the starting point for Arno's story. In addition, some Templar documents and dialogues in Rogue mention the order's plans in France and preparations for future events, which later unfold during the French Revolution in Unity. Even the time period of the games almost coincides: the finale of Rogue takes place just a few years before the start of Unity, so both games actually show different sides of the same era. For example, in some Templar camps, you can hear a conversation between two officers, where one says that “the real struggle will soon move to France,” and the other replies that the Order's people are already preparing there. In the context of the series, this looks like an early hint at future events in France and the conflicts that will later form the basis of Unity's plot. Interestingly, Rogue and Assassin's Creed Unity were released at almost the same time, but show the same era from two different perspectives: Rogue from the perspective of the Templars in North America, and Unity from the perspective of the Assassins in France.
Short and Focused: The Perfect Franchise Spin-off Assassin's Creed Rogue is often described as "Black Flag in the Arctic," and that's both its greatest strength and its core identity.
