tl;dr A series classic, "pilot episode" or "AC2 beta version", with interesting story, but can feel very dated with many issues compared to anything later in the series, after all, this game was originally released in 2008, so I would only recommend this game only if you are big fans of AC series, or big fans or old (or clunky) games in general. I have finished the whole story in one day, took around 10 hours total. Completionist can take around 20 - 25 hrs total (with story included), but it is incredibly boring in my opinion, I do not recommend unless you like collecting 100s of collectibles around the map(s). --- Game breaking issue Before I continue with my other issues and praises, there is one big game (immersion) breaking issue with possible workarounds. What is happening? - every minute or two, there are 5 seconds freezes, this is super annoying and borderline unplayable. This is happening because the game is apparently trying to connect to old Ubisoft servers that are no longer available - Why does it do it? I have no idea, it is stupid, but i would suspect it is some kind of old DRM that was not patched over the years (no surprise there). How to fix this? you need to either: - turn off your internet or - add IPs of those old servers into your hosts file on your system, to redirect them to your local machine (localhost) steps to add the IPs to hosts file on Windows: - open notepad as administrator - open hosts file: C:\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (or wherever it might be on your system) - add these two lines at the bottom and don't forget to save after: 203.132.26.155 localhost 216.98.50.240 localhost Played this on Windows 11 25H2, and this fix worked flawlessly, not a single freeze nor crash, and I have tried modding it via nexus mods adding the "no lag" mod, but it did not solve it, only the two above mentioned fixes did so. --- Few other, lesser issues and my opinions everything feels clunky, the UI, the movement, the camera, only exception is controls, those were fine, apart of combat, that sucked ass, especially with many enemies around, but still manageable, you would get used to the controls pretty quickly. The parkour and climbing in general were fine, good enough in my opinion, and I did not expect much, but also was surprised how relatively good it was for such old game. The world was designed good enough, but everything felt very repetitive, all cities felt the same, with very minor differences. The quests and overall story felt super repetitive and predictable, and kinda underwhelming. Horse riding sucked ass, but thank god there was some form of fast travel (i recommend using it always when it shows). I can imagine the UI must have felt "innovative" at the time, but the functionality was,, meh, but at least it looked pretty and very thematic. (Seriously, why the hell were there like 4 "exits" needed in the menus to fully quit the game?!). Story spoilers below: The absolute ending was a bit,, weird to me, as it just left me in the modern-era room, with no significant hints apart the Eagle vision turning on once, and then left you like that, until you had to figure out that you need to view the room(s) with it, and only when you viewed your bedroom with it, the story finally ended and showed you credits. Must felt super confusing back in the day as well I can imagine lol. Apart of this ending, the final few combats, felt super ♥♥♥♥♥♥, like they just threw at you more and more enemies, and that was the whole thing, felt super lazy, apart the fight with the Assassins leader (forgot his name sorry), that felt a little bit "innovative" with the hide-and-seek mechanic. --- Final thoughts? Overall, I would rate this 5 / 10, with the bias of playing this in 2026, where there are just better thing to play. I have played this just because I am fan of the series, and want to play all the AC games, and never played AC1 somehow, and wanted to see how it compares to newer AC games like Origins and such. I must say, it felt better than for example Valhalla (which I still did not finish), felt like it has soul, and also it did not crash a single time! (take notes Valhalla, ffs) Why so long review on such old game? I like to write reviews, and I am just practicing writing my thoughts in some more coherent way. Thank you for reading!

Before Ezio, before fancy gadgets, before social stealth actually worked — there was Altair: the original parkour philosopher. This man jumps off towers like gravity’s optional, delivers one-liners colder than his sword, and somehow manages to look cool in 2007 graphics. Yeah, the missions get a bit repetitive, but back then we didn’t care — we were too busy losing our minds over “Wait… the Animus???” and “WHAT IS THIS STORY???” Altair walked so Ezio could stylishly run across rooftops. It’s clunky, it’s iconic, it’s pure history. Would desync for old times’ sake.

Amazing game, but make sure to turn off your internet, limit you fps to 60, and make sure V-Sync is on, otherwise the game will freeze every minute or so and you will die when performing a leap of faith, and you might encounter other bugs I am unaware of, but if you did the things I said the game will run great.
