I grew up playing this game on PS2 with my older brother back in the early 2000s. I’m 30 years old now and he’s pushing 40, so booting this game back up again was honestly a huge nostalgia trip for both of us. The gameplay is still fun, the atmosphere still hits, and surprisingly split-screen even worked with my buddy over Steam as long as we both had controllers connected. So yes - the GAME itself still holds up. In 2026, this game still feels like I was playing it for the first time as a kid - the gameplay was refreshing in today's world. A full game and story to complete with no stupid cosmetic store. Graphics still hold up surprisingly well for 2026 standards, we are talking a game made in 2001 I think. But there is absolutely NO reason this should cost $40 in 2026. Seriously. What exactly are we paying for here? This is a 25+ year old game with: No major graphical overhaul No rebuilt mechanics No modern multiplayer integration No expanded content No major quality-of-life improvements Barely anything added at all It honestly feels like they grabbed an old PS2 game, uploaded it to Steam, slapped a nostalgia tax on it, and called it a day. And before someone says “well don’t buy it then” - THAT is exactly why this is frustrating. I AM the target audience for this game. I’m literally someone who grew up loving it. Longtime fans should be the people defending this release, not the ones feeling ripped off by it. That’s the part that bothers me the most: This doesn’t feel like a celebration of a classic game. It feels like publishers testing how much nostalgia alone can squeeze out of people financially. If this was $15-$20? Easy recommendation. If this had actual remastered graphics, online functionality, restored content, or meaningful improvements? Easy recommendation. But $40 for what is basically the same game from over two decades ago is honestly borderline insulting to fans. I’m still giving it a thumbs up because underneath all the corporate greed, the game itself is legitimately fun and brought back a ton of good memories for me, but just know that I am deeply disappointed in the fact you guy's charged me 40 dollars for this - and that I probably wont be buying any future titles from you just due to this experience. Just know before buying: You are paying almost entirely for nostalgia.

This is the definitive experience for this previously console-exclusive title... only if the price weren't so high! Ignoring the wacky price, this is well worth playing. Somewhat short for an RPG, difficult for casual action RPG enjoyers, but runs well on Steam Deck. Achievements would have at least made the high price seem more worth it, but overall a solid recommendation if you don't mind paying this much.

Nostalgia Trip, (price even with the discount is ludicrous)

They don't make games like this anymore. Sometimes I go back to Dark Alliance just to remember the magic that surrounded every gaming experience in the 2000s. Still plays great, super fun stuff for your steam deck.

Although I have only 5.3 hours on record, I used to play these game a lot as a kid on PS2. There is still heavy nostalgia every time I start the game and enter the elf song tavern. I just remember playing through the game in coop with my friend during sleep overs. We always rented it and for some reason he could never save the progress so each time it was like we were playing a roguelike. I can still hear the trader saying, "swords, axes, bows. We have everything you need right here!" It's an absolute classic of the ARPG genre and while I wouldn't say it is worth the price they are asking it is a good buy on sale. It is a good steam deck game.
