June 2025
A messy, often shambolic game with lots of puzzling design choices. Aside from the obvious bugs that everyone will encounter, this is loaded with dozens of little issues that add-up. There are areas that you would assume have secrets, but offer nothing. Worse yet are the single tile alcoves you can roll into that occasionally softlock the game. The inventory screen is nonsensical even on its own merits putting aside the bizarre decision to not show passive equipment pick ups. Sometimes keys are quest items, sometimes they appear in your hud. Poorly signposted deathpits all over the place, which are especially off-putting in a (somewhat) non-linear game like this. The sparse cutscenes seem weirdly inserted in as hazy filtered video files despite being made with pixel art which gives them a weightlessness that entirely dulls their impact. There's an overall sense that this is the first pass that should have been cleaned up before release. However, it's also admirable in many ways. This pushes backs against many of the fashionable trends you see in the glut of 'indie' 2D action/search action games that saturate the Steam storefront. This is a 'metroidvania' that is actually mostly linear. There are very few secrets, upgrades or reasons to backtrack to previous areas. I see this as more of an asset than a flaw and the lack of a grid-based map with a percentage in the corner supports this design choice. There is more of a c64 sensibility permeating the world design in this than is common in its peers. It doesn't do too much handholding nor does it ever seem obtuse. It's brisk, generally well-paced and uses its simple mechanics well. The platforming and enemy variety are satisfying, though this is definitely lacking in boss amount and complexity. For something this short, I would have hoped for 2-3 bosses in each area rather than the 0-1 on offer. The greatest strength of this game is its visual design. This is aesthetically in line with something like Batman NES, with strong blacks and deep, saturated colors. It's very striking and charming in a way that few contemporary pixel art games pull off and feels more in-line with actual retro games than the imagined retro aesthetic that permeates so many of the other throwbacks. I know this review is mostly full of complaints, but there's also so much interesting and fun stuff in this game. There is a lack of polish and cohesion which is very frustrating since so many of the individual components are quite good. Still, an easy recommendation for fans of this style of game.

Explore, kill skeletons, explore, kill bats.....repeat. Very Metroidvania. Not a bad game. If you're a fan of the genre, grab it when you see it on sale.

This game has great artwork and music that really captures the retro aesthetic. It is a very difficult game, a bit rough around the edges, but overall has solid and fun gameplay at its core!

TL;DR: Game lacks some polished, yet is fun to play after you gain some abilities/upgrades and gives you a good amount of challenge if you grew up with some old ]platformers like Castlevania, Rygar. When the game starts you get a lot of cheap damage and the game trolls you a lot with some traps, seems that after the 1st and 2nd areas the developer noticed and level design improves after that. Also the game "teach you" that you can go down in some places but then punish you when you try in another ones, not a big deal for me thanks to the frequent checkpoints but may frustrate some people. Environmental hazards AKA insta kills are all over the world so you will get kill A LOT. You have been warned. Control is a bit "unresponsive" due cooldown with melee attack I would like to be able to attack a bit faster or at least be able to start walking faster. It reminds me a bit of Castlevania for NES. The game has couple of issues, but is understandable as was developed for 1 person. And after 6 hours playing there's not big troubles with the bugs I got, appreciate the amout and frequency of checkpoints which help to avoid loose any progress. -There's a bug in the first map if you open the Redefine Keys menu you can't back to play (need to reset the game from steam client) -Also is quite easy to get stuck in places where you can roll and there's 1 tile of free space. Then Start menu doesn't work and again need to restart game from steam client. But be not mistaken, the game is worth it, after you go throuhg the very first 2 areas/maps the game start feeling better and once you get all the abilities the controls feels much better and the game is way more fun to play, totally worth it. The ice block magic is very fun to use and once you learn to use it and abuse it you get some interesting results. Bosses are as of now the only thing I feel "meh", but I'm yet to finish the game and the last Boss I defeated improves over the previous ones. The metroidvania part is there, but I would say is not very "metroid" you can backtrack to find some stuff, there are couple of sidequest which will require you to backtrack to find some items but those are optional (like in you will miss some upgrades probably). -Musica/SFX/Pixel Art are on point no complains here. Presentation is also great -A map or some hints will improve the game a lot. Areas are small so you won't get lost but is hard to keep track of every visited area from memory So in short yes the game is fun to play and the full price is fair. UPDATE after finishing the game: (SPOILER ALERT) I got mixed feelings at the end, like the game let a void on my gamer heart, right at the time I wanted more, the game ends, the final boss is not that hard with the right amount of health upgrades. It's not only that the finall boss feels unfinished, but also liike I'm missing some final and epic level towards the finall boss, I liked how the story goes and the dragon rides you to the final boss, but it feels like there was not time to give me something else, a level, 2nd or 3rd final boss form, a level riding the dragon (shoot em up or just pure action/platforming), don't know something feels off, I just know I wanted more.
