One of the most beautifully written story-driven games of the 7th console generation. It’s a real shame we rarely get games like Beyond: Two Souls anymore. While widely known, it remains an underrated cinematic masterpiece. The narrative depth is outstanding, and the way the ending splits into multiple distinct outcomes based on choices you made throughout the entire playthrough makes the journey feel truly personal. A unique, emotional psychological thriller. 10/10
I was born with a strange gift, the ability to fart the alphabet! Had a bad outcome, because I wasn't able to see the quick-time events through my tears. I'm not crying, you are. Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you this game, which is kind of the same thing. Doesn't it suck when you see reviews for games you liked, and they disappoint you? Or you feel guilty for actually liking a game that many don't? My wife’s boyfriend though tells me if you liked this game a lot, then that's all that matters. I really enjoyed Beyond Two Souls as a movie. Yeah it was over the top, but it was acted well and really touched me. I loved the different ways the story was told but I do think it could of been told in sequence and not in fragments like it was told, but this game is one of my favorite games ever made. I do admit that this game is meant for people for are a certain type of gamer. A gamer who rather prefers story over gameplay. If you like games like The Walking Dead by Telltales or QuanticDream's previous games, this is the game for you. Everyone has all of these reasons for disliking the game, even going so far as to writing novels explaining why it was a bad game, but... I enjoyed it. Even if the decisions didn't make a large impact on the game, it was good. I've never cried over the end of a game before but dammit, I did with this one. I'm glad I played it. The Navajo chapter alone was an unforgettable part of a story that left far behind most films released today. Does it have flaws? Of course but I still consider this to be one of my all time favorite games. Beyond: Two Souls like Detroit is to Heavy Rain feels like a spiritual successor to Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. Shadowy government conspiracy. Mystical mumbo jumbo. Cliche sequences ripped straight out of a terrible B movie. But like Fahrenheit, also has some fantastic moments of genuine emotion. Cages games always have one thing in particular going for them: A phenomenal soundtrack. I don't know where he gets the talent. But they manage to convey so much... It touches a lot of heavy topics, homelessness being the one that crushed me the most, but also the scene with the mother, the bullying that main character received as a teen, the attempt at the bar and the revelation at the end. The acting of both Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe was also great and I loved both interpretations. Pacing and structure may be a little crazy with the jumping back and forth, but it keeps you on your toes and makes things interesting. The real problem is in the usual QuanticDream "slow parts" where you basically do nothing except walk or touch furniture. It works in movies because their plots are deeper, but in games things need to move faster. And when they do, Beyond is great. The train stage, for example, or the ending, or the entire homeless chapter. Even that crazy Navajo chapter that seems pulled from another game, injects some horror elements into the mix which I liked (being a huge horror fan). Above all, the ending hits me hard every time. Especially that revelation. That was easy to predict maybe, but it's still genius. I really liked getting into the head and heart of this young woman. All of that said, I can see how these Quantic Dreams games are not aging well. But people need to understand that it was different playing them when they came out - this kind of interactive, cinematic storytelling, to this degree, was a new, interesting development in the narrative-based game genre. Many games have since improved upon and superceded this implementation, in smaller parts. But this sh*t was COOL when it came out. Newer gamers in general seem to have a hate-on for everything Quantic Dream. These games were important because they pushed the boundaries of the genre. A lot of what's jank today was the norm 10 years ago. It's like watching old movies or shows and being like "how did people enjoy this" without thinking of how it was then. I really never understood the bad rep it seems to have. After discussing about this for years, by now I came to understand it's just "overbearing dudes" that cannot get into the shoes of a young girl. All in all, one of the best games in the genre I have ever played. Games are more than just shooting, platforming etc. This is a much more intelligent game for people who like to think, feel part of a journey and its emotions… it’s a whole experience as you follow all the parts of this girls life! I have been playing games since the 80’s on the ZX81, arcades, etc etc... right up to now and this is an amazing and heart breaking emotional storyline which in my mind should be experienced by everyone at least once. I highly recommend it, just remember it’s a game from its own time. 8/10
Pretty great cinematic driven game and the casting/acting was pretty solid too. 100% would recommend a blind playthrough like I did. I would also recommend doing one in chronological order just because the timeline got a little confusing. For any achievement hunters, the one for all endings was a bit tedious(rep[laying the same chapters a few times). Game also doesn't support widescreen (cuts off the QTE's entirely so the first two hours were long headbanging moments for me) and the QTE's as a whole felt a little wonky after adjusting my resolution. Overall the story is what keeps you engaged and going...suspenseful, emotional. 8/10
