Note that I played the 2016 remastered version of this game. It's a sloppy effort with many textures left in incongruous low-res. More importantly, it crashes a lot. Though there is a community-made mod that fixes the crashes I would still recommend you buy the original instead. The devs are knowingly selling a broken remaster—for 9 years at the time of this writing!—and should not be rewarded with your money. The original BioShock is a masterpiece of backstory and environmental design. It thrusts you into an evocative and cynical world, where every new area revels in discovery and delight. The premise of BioShock 2 is that you're back in Rapture, again , though this time as a different character. Since BioShock 's forte is in discovering its setting, reusing that setting in a sequel immediately limits its ability to surprise you. The result is that, though this is a full-length game, it conceptually feels like a DLC. But that's not so bad in itself. It does feel great to be back in Rapture and the new character is fun to play. Unfortunately, the story is hard to follow. Perhaps more critically, it feels tacked-on. It doesn't seem like the world of BioShock really needed this subplot. It does fill in one gap in the story of the first game, but it wasn't a particularly loose thread. That said, there is a sequence near the end of BioShock 2 that is quite surprising indeed. It's so awesome that it makes me wish there was more of it in the game as a whole. Besides the story, this game is more combat-focused than its predecessor and in this respect it holds up pretty well. There are many power upgrades and weapons to mess around with and some of the enemies are pretty cool. It's all quite exciting for the most part, but in the latter third of the game it gets repetitive: same enemies, just more of them at once. There's even a DLC named Protector Trials , which is 100% combat. I skipped it because I had my fill in the main game. Just don't skip the Minerva's Den DLC, which is a side-story for what already feels like a side-story. And it's actually a better side-story than the main side-story. Am I making sense? In any case, it's worthy. The bottom line is that if you've finished BioShock and want more of its gameplay then BioShock 2 will deliver. Otherwise, it doesn't break new ground or significantly expand the BioShock universe. Depending on your expectations, that might be pretty great.

It's 2025 and I'm playing this series for the first time. I understand the story in BioShock 1 is supposed to be incredible (and it is), but BioShock 2 literally threw me for a loop in comparison. BioShock 2 feels much more gracefully aged with it's controls and gameplay mechanics. It literally just felt like a more improved BioShock 1. If there was any critique, I'd argue this game felt more... repetitive than the first in terms of gameplay loop. It feels like half of the time I really was looking for Adam to gather, where in BioShock 1 exploration seems to be more encouraged? I'd say BioShock 1 had the best story in the entire universe if Minerva's Den didn't exist. Minerva's Den was so engaging from beginning to end. If there are people still curious about this series and have no clue if they'll like it, I I'd almost recommend buying BioShock 2 and playing Minerva's Den first. It's sweet and has a similar impact to BioShock 1's story. Onto Infinite. Hoping for good things!

This game is a piece of art. I don't understand why it's so hated, I loved it. The gunplay is perfect, it's a direct upgrade from BioShock 1's. It's very satisfying and smooth, not clunky or stiff at all. The mechanics are all great, too. Hacking isn't a pain anymore like in the original game. You don't have to construct an entire pipeline. now, you just have to time your click on the green bars correctly. The story is decent. It's certainly not as beautifully written as the original, but it's still pretty well-done. The game introduces new enemies, like prototype Big Daddies and Big Sisters, which make the game more challenging and spice up the experience. There are also new weapons, like the Rivet Gun, the Drill, and the Spear Gun. These are neat additions that make the game more unique. I only experienced two crashes throughout my playthrough, both of which happened when entering the train to progress to the next level. Otherwise, the performance was excellent. I highly recommend playing BioShock 2. If you were disappointed by the first game's mechanics and gunplay, or if you just want to play all the BioShock games, BioShock 2 is the way to go.

So here’s the thing: I loved BioShock. Like, “still think about it while brushing my teeth” loved it. So when BioShock 2 came along, I braced for disappointment. Everyone told me it was the “weaker sequel,” the “unnecessary cash-in,” the “awkward middle child.” But you know what? Those people were wrong. BioShock 2 slaps—and I will die on this rusted, leaky, underwater hill. From the moment you boot it up and realize you’re a Big Daddy, the tone shifts. You’re not a confused outsider stumbling into Rapture—you’re part of it. You know its decay, its cruelty, and now you’re stomping through it with a drill arm and a deep sense of regret. It’s like BioShock, but from the other side of the porthole. The combat? Vastly improved. Dual-wielding plasmids and weapons? Yes, please. The drill? Incredibly satisfying. The hacking mini-game? Thank you for not making me play pipe dream again. Everything just felt smoother, tighter, and more fun. I was still setting things on fire and electrocuting Splicers in puddles, but now I did it with the confidence of a genetically modified scuba dad. And the story? No, it’s not as twisty as the first game, but it has heart. Actual, emotional heart. Sofia Lamb is a fantastic antagonist—ideological, manipulative, and terrifying in a cold, clinical way. The Little Sister dynamic? Beautifully expanded. The ending? Genuinely touching, depending on how you played. I didn’t expect to feel things while stomping around in a diving suit, but here we are. Sure, it reuses assets. Yes, it doesn’t have the same surprise-factor the original had. But it builds on the world, gives you a new perspective, and actually manages to say something different about morality, identity, and choice. That’s not “less than”—that’s impressive.
