Wonderful deckbuilding roguelike, 9/10. Don't worry about the negative reviews thrashing the difficulty - there are different difficulty levels, and if you have any experience with deckbuilding roguelikes (and you think carefully as you play), you won't have too much trouble beating the game. In my two runs so far (once in easy and another in normal), I've managed to beat the game without any 'OP' items or events. From how I'm playing, I've noticed that runs can move slowly when you think about how to optimize every single turn. You may either love that or hate that. It's not the same as StS or Balatro in which a turn would vary between 5 seconds and 2 minutes; instead my turns here vary between 45 seconds and 6 minutes. When creatures die, they die. And health is a coveted resource, so patience and planning is demanded of you to succeed in a run. Aside from the flow of the game, the game itself also has very unique gameplay and a spectacular art style, letting it step away from the giants of the deckbuilding roguelike genre and stand out on its own. The 'story' of the game is enjoyable, appearing in the form of diary fragments and a bestiary, encouraging you to collect and beat the game with new creatures each run. It's a 9/10 and not a 10/10 just for minor clunkiness, like problems with scrolling through creature abilities in certain menus, or not always being the absolute clearest with battle rewards. (All things which I imagine will be cleaned up over time.) I highly recommend checking the game out and giving it an opportunity to reach out to a larger audience - I'm genuinely shocked such a great game is flying so under the radar. Now excuse me while I go for just one more run.

I have beaten all the bosses so far (a mix of easy and medium difficulty) and I LOVE this game. It does so many things right and the core gameplay is amazing. With that being said, this game has so much more potential to truly be better. Biggest issue I have right now is there isn't really an incentive to keep doing runs. While many roguelikes have some sort of way you keep permanent items or unlock new abilities after every run (Hades you collect resources to upgrade your character to become stronger/ BOI unlocks new characters and arcanas), Decktamer doesn't seem to have this. Each run truly seem self contained in their own run. You unlock game modes as well as more potential monsters to see but you don\t exactly build up for something. Would love if you had a "hub" area where you can potentially upgrade your starters/bring more items etc. Game can also do better with connecting the stories to the run, like each run you're going deeper and actually making a difference. Finally, as for the 2 branching path system, if the game adpoted something like Slay the Spire where you can choose multiple options/events etc would definitely be better.

Before you play there is a mental switch you need to make. In this game you do not collect a team of cute pets to face the world. In this game you gather disposable minions you throw at problems often intentionally sacrificing them for a chance at a stronger new minion. The second you stop thinking about your cute little pets as your companion and see them as the disposable slaves they are the game stops being impossibly hard and the whole game opens up with wide tactical choices every battle. Without this mental switch well, you get some of the negative reviews here complaining about how hard the game is. If you use a taming item to heal with instead, that's 99% of the time a mistake. Healing that weak minion could also have been used to tame a stronger minion instead. This game is great IF you're willing to make that switch in how you see your pets. They are disposable slaves, use them as such. The game is great, very unique as this is not how pet games or deck builders are generally done. It's fresh, unique and the art is just gorgeous. Absolutely amazing work. sound is also very chill.

TLDR Peak deckbuilding + a pokemon nuzloke expiriense. Spending 3-5 hours on the demo to see if it will grow on you is a must for anyone who loves either of the two. So, this game's main premice is that your cards and enemy cards are one and the same. Each enemy can be tamed and added to your deck through depleting it's health to one and giving it food, and you will need it because monsters grow in strength fast. This game has some of the most meaningful and interesting choices in all of deckbuilders, because every single action result is permanent. Your creature died? It's gone. Simply indured? Well, damage is not removed after the battle too! You tamed an enemy creature/modified your creature/healed your creature? You just spent a limited consumable to do it, get ready to be powercrept if you ran out of them before reaching the final levles. In battles, the game allows you to freely strategize multiuple turns in advance, potentially leading to very complicated and satisfying plays. Meta knowlege is rewarded significantly, too, the game has a lot of delicious syneries you can get by adding traits to creatures. You don't need "to get a good rng for an op build or you will lose" either. This game is a condenced nuzlocke expiriense for people who don't have +500 hours in pokemon games. Especially on harder difficulties, where the main part of the gameplay is intensly looking at the screen and evaluating long-term pros and cons of your possible choices. If you know what that is and they look interesting to you - you MUST try the game out. If you don't, but you are an expiriensed deckbuilder player and you simply want a new, fresh game of the genre - try it out anyway, it might just grow on you. The only thing I can say that might be unpleasant about the game so far - amount of choices can be overwhelming, and it can take some time to understand what the game wants from you. This part of the game will not work out for everyone, which is why playing the demo in this case is important before buying it, thankfully demo is a full expiriense. I advice you to take it easy and just do whatever without trying to win to get a basic grip of the game. Getting a few loses is a learning expiriense that can help to get past a descision paralysis. It's worth a shot, this game might just become your personal favorite. EDIT: unlockable content makes the game even jucier. Each new final boss is better than the last.

This is an incredible deckbuilder. You have so many decisions to make every turn that it's a fantastic amount of fun. Definitely worth it, even at full price. Challenging and really fun. (I played the beta for about 10 hours about 18 months ago, and now have just revisited it on release day.. it was a must buy for me.)
