Before buying this game I read some of the reviews, and noticed a common complaint was the difficulty, and lack of viable synergies that make winning runs possible, which almost dissuaded me from buying it. I am so glad I bought it anyway because this game hit all the marks for me. The creature art is incredible, the music and sound design is immersive, and as an avid Slay the Spire, XCOM 2, and Inscryption enjoyer, Decktamer's gameplay really touched on a lot of my favorite components of these games, while adding its own unique flair with having to tame and mutate the creatures in your deck into killing machines. As to the difficulty, I truly think that the game just has a steep learning curve that many people are still in the process of mastering. Once you "get it" though, a lot of the harder parts of the game become incredibly rewarding in the way that a difficult boss in Dark Souls is rewarding. For a game in which the whole draw is turned based strategy, it would be a disservice to the player if it was easy. Look up a few winning runs on hard diffculties/bosses if you're feeling stuck, it can help get the creative juices flowing on the kinds of ability interactions you wanna look for.

My recommendation for Decktamer comes with a big asterisk because while its core is incredible, it has some glaring flaws that others have pointed out. Everything that's positive about the game is readily obvious and I won't talk about it as much; it's the negatives that only come up a bit later and are more worth discussing. While this hasn't stopped me from enjoying it enough to keep playing, I suffer through some of these issues while knowing that they're issues. So: Pros: -Amazing art and creature design -Immersive atmosphere -Well-written bestiary/diary entries -Genuinely thought-provoking strategy -Moody soundtrack; every layer feels that much more oppressive, yet hauntingly charming -The mutation system is REALLY creative and lets you make some fascinating team compositions Cons: -Both the in-run difficulty and the difficulty settings are overly harsh (I'll elaborate below) -Some abilities and build types straight up become unusable past Venturer -The undo feature on some modes is very unintuitive, as it only takes you back to the moment before you let combat commence. Items are still wasted, monsters still are placed, the whistle is still used up, etc. -There isn't enough to do between battles, leaving you fighting an uphill battle against attrition that also quickly gets draining Most of my criticisms only arise after Explorer and Pioneer difficulties, which is where I've spent most of my time in the game. I'll go into a little more detail about why the difficulty can be an issue. Difficulty can always be a dicey subject but it's very worth discussing because the wrong kind of it can create annoyances rather than challenge. On Scout and Venturer (Easy and Normal, in essence), I have no issues whatsoever. I don't think I ever played on Scout past the first run I did and Venturer generally feels right. It's when you get to Explorer that suddenly there's this MASSIVE leap. Not only do your creatures not heal, but your mutagen needles deal damage to them, which really hurts the want to experiment because even 1 damage is massive in this game. Items are also suddenly more scarce, compounding the newfound healing problem. It cascades a bit. Because you get fewer items in general, you get starved for the food items that serve the dual use of getting new monsters and healing the ones you have. This scarcity creates 2 more problems: you have so few of them that using them to heal is more often than not a waste; and because they only have a -chance- of catching new monsters even when you're saving them, failing a single capture can straight up put you at enough of a disadvantage that you may as well forfeit the run. It really is that extreme. You are going to lose core members of your team unless you risk catch attempts as low as 30-50%. Again, the lack of something like a shop or non-combat event between battles really hurts your ability to survive in a way that often feels unfair. The player should have a little more control. That being said, this is for all intents and purposes a roguelike Nuzlocke: you are meant to lose monsters as you go deeper into your run. You are meant to make tough calls and sacrifices. I love that part about it. I'm also completely hooked on the strange, but consistent lore, unique systems, and amazing music. My playtime should tell you that overall, I adore this game. I just also see where it will push people away and where it could be improved.

An URGENT Message to the DEVELOPPERS !!! Please UPVOTE so they see this !!! Endless mode NEEDS the option to have effects explanation TOGGLED OFF, i'm currently in Normal Difficulty waves 37 and each battle is taking 15 mins just from effects being explained alone ! Also some of us, myself included run the game on older PCs so please consider also the option to DISABLE cards shining effects on card when injected with MANY syringes, it takes way too much GPU power and would be nice to not have on if desired even for Mid+ end PCs I'v been a retired gamer for a while and this game made me dust off my old laptop just to play it, help this message go through so i can reach wave 100+ ( Yes possible ) and i'll post my progress for all to see ! LOVE THIS GAME !

You KNOW its a GREAT game when you beat the "true final boss" after many tries and instinctively say to yourself that you HAVE to review this game. its not just a good game, its a great game. the replayability is basically infinite. many different modes, many bosses, secret bosses, tons of different builds, a randomness that does not feel RNG (it feels really well balanced), yes ofcourse, very occasionally there will be a run where you just get cooked, but that gets less and less prevalent as you level up because new creatures that are very good become unlocked and show up through your runs. look, i've played almost every roguelike, i've played a ton of deckbuilders, i'm not entirely sure but i think this might be the top contender for a roguelike deckbuilder, it quite simply is a great game, specially for the price, i mean are you kidding me :D? i've played this game non-stop since i got it, its that frigging good. but what really sets it apart? i finally have a game, sitting in my library, which i'm willing to say i can infinitely play without getting bored of, and in a way that doesn't consume me or infuriate me with bugs and gimmics and crashes. my only hope is that this game gets infinite DLCs to make it even more fun, which is honestly not easy at this point.

Before you play there is a mental switch you need to make. In this game you do not collect a team of cute pets to face the world. In this game you gather disposable minions you throw at problems often intentionally sacrificing them for a chance at a stronger new minion. The second you stop thinking about your cute little pets as your companion and see them as the disposable slaves they are the game stops being impossibly hard and the whole game opens up with wide tactical choices every battle. Without this mental switch well, you get some of the negative reviews here complaining about how hard the game is. If you use a taming item to heal with instead, that's 99% of the time a mistake. Healing that weak minion could also have been used to tame a stronger minion instead. This game is great IF you're willing to make that switch in how you see your pets. They are disposable slaves, use them as such. The game is great, very unique as this is not how pet games or deck builders are generally done. It's fresh, unique and the art is just gorgeous. Absolutely amazing work. sound is also very chill.
