as a huge fan of dicey dungeons, games like slay the spire don't really capture my attention; the dice are what really make it fun for me. for a long time i've been looking for something that scratches a similar itch. nothing else has really done it for me until dog witch. the dice add the perfect amount of randomness without having to read and learn tons of different card effects and getting bogged down in lots of math. everything is simple to understand but there is still plenty of depth. there are so many items which can have interesting interactions with each other, and the hats (which can be mixed and matched) add an additional layer of variety and challenge. i also really love the art direction and style. it's cute and silly, with all kinds of strange creatures that somehow all work together in the world being presented. the music is nice and relaxing, too. it helps that i am both a dog and a witch irl, so i can deeply relate to the main character. being called a "bad dog" makes me crave vengeance! i am NOT a bad dog!!

A lot of the negative reviews are saying there's too much RNG, and as someone who *has* bounced off of card games and roguelikes with too much RNG, I don't think this is true for Dog Witch. This game feels more about using your choices to fill holes in your character so all of your dice feel like they have a purpose, as opposed to making Number Go Up. Not to say there isn't fun synergies and effective strategies, but sometimes beating the game with a suboptimal build can be more rewarding than facerolling everything immediately. That aside, the lo-fi music is a perfect mood, the visual presentation is excellent and a full run takes less than half an hour to complete, making Dog Witch very easy to pick up and play. Content is a little light, but there should be updates down the road.

Dog Witch is a pretty fun "dice" building roguelite. The art is cute, the customization of the dog is fun, and overall it's a solid idea. That said, the RNG in this game is brutal and there's no real way to skew it in your favor except through more re-rolls (which are at the cost of upgrading a different item and you have to be lucky enough to have an item with that ability offered to you in the random offerings you get between encounters). You can be early on in a run and basing your strengths around a couple of item upgrades, only to not roll any of those upgraded items across your 3 total rolls in a turn and wind up in a run-ending position far too quickly. There have been entire turns where I've never rolled a single defense and my offense wasn't enough to kill the enemies that would in turn kill me - and it's only the second encounter. This is the most un-fun aspect of the whole game. I don't know if they need to add some dice odds manipulation early game, across the game, or what, but going from feeling real strong in one encounter to never rolling your strengths in the next and dying is just nuts and wildly discouraging. I'm hoping they find a way to address this because bashing my head against a brick wall of RNG with no way to get it to work in my favor at all isn't fun exactly, and what's here isn't quite good enough to overcome that discouraging feeling to keep me playing. I'm leaving this as a positive review though because I'd like to believe a patch will address this later, and the game as-is can be fun for a few hours. And at the price point it's at (~$9 USD) my frustrations aren't significant enough to keep me from saying give it a try.
