I was confused by the mixed reviews so I looked through them. After translation, it seems they were focused on difficulty and gameplay loop, which are fair to critique, though I wouldn't normally be this demanding during early access where these two points are most likely to change. However, I also understand that this is the only way players in certain countries can actually get heard. I agree that especially at the beginning, the damage you take is immense (that first mini-boss is death from full health in about 10 seconds if you're not ready), and even regular mobs (e.g. dogs) can take sizeable chunks out of you, whereas the healing you get back sometimes equals less than a single hit. There IS meta-progression to reduce damage taken and create healing builds, but definitely a smoother dmg/healing curve could be placed. Some complained that having to choose between run upgrades and meta upgrades is an inane decision, but... that's literally Hades. A bit strange to fault Echoes for this when it's the norm. The negative reviews have valid concerns, but are less lenient that regular EA reviews tend to be due to limitations those players have in sharing opinions. I also think their concerns are easily fixed, so I don't want the negative reviews to prevent people from enjoying what I think is one of the better Roguelikes out there, especially one with such a satisfying spellcrafting system. Here are my reasons for enjoying this game. The smoothness of combat. The creativity of the spellcrafting system. The variety of visibly and mechanically different builds that aren't just math-goes-up. That's not even covering the great music! It also has a good baseline for a story with the interesting worldbuilding, though I would need more concrete examples of that story unfolding beyond the few key character interactions I've seen. The gameplay loop currently keeps me engaged more than the other Roguelikes to have come out recently, because it truly feels a lot more like you're building something new everytime, instead of following a to-do list. I tend to fall half-asleep playing some well-rated roguelikes because they eventually reach a rhythm where you stop thinking about what you're doing, but not with Echoes: even if you do build a lawnmower of a build, you still have to be present to make use of it, and the animations are truly too beautiful to not enjoy watching over and over, especially as they evolve. The long and short of it: please give this game a try, it has both an excellent foundation and limitless potential to be amazing. I'm being selfish here in wanting to see this studio do a lot more with Echoes, and I hope a lot of you will want to be just as selfish with me!

TL;DR: Great core premise, adds something to REALLY set it apart from other isometric action roguelikes (Hades, Cult of the lamb, Magicraft, etc..) Atmosphere is great and there are some hiccups, but that will get fixed in time. Worth buying/watching. Great game so far, the premise is based off of their previous title, mages of mystralia with a bit of carryover world lore (which I LOVE) So far, the gameplay is great and atmosphere/ graphics are AWESOME for this kind of indie game, really makes it timeless. The gameplay is honestly really fastpaced but allows for some breathing room for slower paced builds. I also love that it's voice acted, there's just nothing like a game being fully voice acted when you weren't fully expecting it to be so, really lifts this game into a polished gem before it even hits 1.0, and I'm here for it. You will probably think of the multitude of isometric rougelikes out there when you first see this game. There are a lot of comparisons to Hades and whatever. I think that this games CORE mechanic, the thing that really makes it stand out is the SPELLCRAFTING. It is delightful to take a basic charged "arrow" spell and turn it into a self replicating "DPS shield spell" in one run and then having it be a volly spell that leaves a DoT feild the next run. There is a lot of modularity and it's very unique in that way. Just like their previous title, they actually have SPELLCRAFTING, akin to how a real wizard would have to study and make their own unique spells. Many caster themed games seem to ignore it, and in my opinion, wear the wizarding robes as more of set dressing for whatever genre they want to push. There are some bugs and kinks and some things in game need to be smoothed out for balance. Content could also be expanded (ofcourse) and I feel like there could be MORE affixes and suff, but it will come with time, so I'm not worried. It's fully functional and decently optimized, I personally haven't had any stutters, but granted I haven't filled my screen with particles that my eyes bleed. Personally I'm really hoping they add more active spell types, flesh out two more elements (Lux and possibly umbra/ chaos if they wanted to be spicy) and if they REALLY wanted to blow my mind, co-op. But that might be too much to ask. That said; this is a game that will be worth looking into as development pushes into 1.0, it's a delightful gem and the Borialis team KNOWS that it's something special. I can't wait to see where they take this game!

I feel like I need to drop a positive review asap, to support the developers... First, about the game. When the demo was available, only the first location and the first set of four spells were in acess. I spent about four hours with this demo. Now I've started a fresh save to get a feel for how the progression has changed. Well... On my second run, I killed first boss. Maybe my hands still remember demo experience. But I'd call the progression good. Either way, after every decent run, there's something to improve. There are clear goals - the spells. I want to try all of them. And overall, for me personally, all the interest revolves around the core mechanic - combinatorial spellcrafting. And within 3 hours, I've already gotten enough to feel the power. Incomparably small compared to the trailers, but already noticeably satisfying. The technical state at the moment (on my system) is also outstanding. No lags, no bugs, no thing. Smooth. The only downside I can personally point out... Spider mother is too strong, and the stone shield (Exae Gaea) is too weak. But that's just my take. Maybe I haven't fully figured out all the possibilities yet. However, I have something else to say, because I've read the negative reviews... So here's the thing. This is not Hades. You might think that because there's a story, because the characters talk a lot and are nicely drawn, because each run is divided into rooms where you choose the reward you want at the next turn - that this game is "copying" Hades. In my opinion, you're thinking too narrowly. Hades set a bar that perhaps is desired to be matched. What I described above is just the surface. But the substance... If you're a Noita fan - you'll have fun here. No, you probably won't be able to make a spell that summons a nuke that creates a black hole after exploding, which turns into a cute little deer when it expires. But the essence is preserved. Simplified, but for the better. Not everyone will like Noita in its original form. But what attracts me to it, for example - is shown here just as well. And really. Enough with comparing games. I could compare the combat to Curse of the Dead Gods to make it look bad. I could say the pacing is worse than Dead Cells. And the balance is much worse than The Binding of Isaac. But the truth is, neither the combat, nor the pacing, nor the balance are worse in comparison - they're just a matter of preference. In your (or my) own eyes. Launch the game. Give it time. Use your imagination and engagement. Enjoy. This game is capable of giving you that.

sad to see this game with mixed reviews. The demo was great, and the full release is great as well. There are so few spell-crafters out there... People will complain about the difficulty, and then play Hades or Noita >_>

I heavily disagree with Kenn's review, yes you have to learn the timing to dodge properly (the dodge has a longer cooldown than Hades, and that's a GOOD thing), but like wth ? Once you learned it you're good and I actually find it too easy to avoid attacks from many ennemies in the game without even having to dodge, just by running. Like the big armored ennemies from the first area are so slow, you never haev to rely on the dodge. You have 10 hp left when you finally craft a powerful spell ? What the hell again, get good I guess ? No, seriously, it's like in Hades, the memories you get are random, so some runs you may struggle to have a powerfull spell, but most runs, by the time you reach the first guardian you have at least one very good spell out of the two equipped. I ran out of available slots in two different runs actually. So I don't understand that review at all. I don't think the game is unbalanced, it's like all games in this genre, once you learned the patterns, you don't get punished so badly, it's litteraly the goal of these typa games. "Restart, die, restart, die, restart".... It's a roguelike.... and I got to the 2nd guardian in my third run. If you played Hades how are you so bad at this one ? In one run I made enough meta resources to unlock one more passiv and two new spells... The only thing I agree with, is that some of the "minor" bosses, like the shadows are a little overtuned. At least once you reach the mountains, like the stone guy's shadow is way faster there and kills you fast if he hits you, so yes, you really need to dodge and move properly to avoid his heavy damages. But again, I think that's exactly the goal. As far as I'm concerned, I think this is the best roguelike I played since Hades 1. Oh also, AMAZING soundtrack, when I reached the first boss and heard Gamelan music from Bali starting, I had goozebumps. I love Indonesian music, check Tari Legong Kraton Lasem on youtube if you want more. Wishlist: It would be nice if you could test the different spell forms/element variations in the lobby before buying them, I ended up buying the Air version of the Fireball only to realize I didn't like it (I expected rapid mid range linear air strikes, it ends up being a circular melee like move)
