April 2025
Loved it for what it was. Went in blind with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised, especially as I read that this is the studio's first game. Pros: + Large multilevel areas to explore + Exploration is encouraged and rewarded + Lots of collectables for the magpie gamers + Interesting/novel discovery-exploration modes + Moderately well-developed story and somewhat multifaceted characters + Lore-rich (more like lore-mid, comparatively speaking) + Customizable play style + pace + Interesting combat mechs/skill combo effects + Pretty graphics/design - [though not especially original or unique stylistically] + Combines lots of my fave games' best attributes + You can play the whole game with your base armor set and just keep upgrading it with better resources as you go- or switch to another set for different (not better/worse) perks Cons: - Honestly I just want more of this game. It was too short for me even though it's not an especially short game if you 100% it. - There's definitely some jank but not game breaking jank (imo) - Boss fights and farm-upgrade-grind get repetitive feeling (** not as tediously grindy as a lot of similar games though) - Wish the lore and story were more important to the game play. To expound upon this: I wish reading the lore, knowing more about the characters, and all the dialogue options mattered to the gameplay. I wish engaging with the story and NPCs could give you an edge in the game/affect the way things play out. As it is, there's a ton of dialogue and interactions that are very interesting but ultimately superfluous which reduces the incentive to engage with it instead of just smashing keys to skip interactions/scenes.This is just not that kind of choice dependent RPG game - and that's okay. -END OF RELEVANT CONTENT- reading further may be upsetting, as I discuss my FEELINGS about themes/aspects of this games that are contentious in some realms. I also use language that could alienate some sensitive socio-cultural groups or confuse people with a myopic world view disorder. It is also just full-on word vomit that is borderline incoherent. Do not use up your mental energy trying to get through it. You have been warned. I now divest myself of reactional liability. --------------- - (super personal gripe & possible spoiler-ish) - not a value judgement: I do not like romance in games generally unless it affects the actual game play/unlocks items/gear etc. - The affinity mechanic did not register with me at all, so I was gobsmacked to have my NPC coworkers confessing their undying love for me- seemingly out of nowhere - near the end of the game. Some of the dialogue was admittedly flirtatious but not overtly so. Maybe it's just the 'tism speaking, but without any of them outright stating that they had amorous intentions, I would never have guessed they were not all just being kind, considerate, and a bit overly chatty people. There were times I began to wonder if the wording was "vibey" but I just did not see it coming. Then I got worried that my "decision" about returning someone's feelings would affect the game. I genuinely got mildly upset because I liked all the romance-able characters equally. Laen was probably most platonically attractive to me bc I related to them the most- but unfortunately they were the first character to profess their feelings and I got anxious about all the options and possible affects of my responses.... TO BE CLEAR: it does not affect the game, it just gives you different dialogue options and you get a very tame suggestive cut-scene with your selected lover. You may even have the choice to take no lover. A quick google will probably supply a complete breakdown of the romance causation-web, I just don't care enough to look. I'd have chosen them all if it were an option. I picked the guy Arekim(sp?) [A-Wreck-im!? I hardly know him! You're welcome.] I only chose him bc I was cursed to be born as a vanilla cishet femoid ... but he was far less interesting to me than the other two. All in all, I just felt very meh about it all and could have done without it. Rant concluded. After playing for a while I looked at some reviews and was more surprised than I probably should have been that this game got blasted for being "woke". Some comments noted that it would end up failing due to its “obvious agenda pushing”. The most lenient of these reviews called it "another 'girl with a sword' game"... so, you know, way different than the vast majority of "boy with a sword" games ?? which I guess is how I'll reductively describe most games I play now. Thanks to the resulting rabbit hole foray, I was gifted several minutes of intense eye-rolling calisthenics exercises and sad chuckle reps as I immersed myself in the rich, pungent world of "male gamer" subculture. It seems to be largely sustained by false-masculinity posturing, impotent rage-fueled bloviating, and RealDoll/ED Med sponsorships. This game is good for what it is. It’s nothing more or less than that, and it certainly isn't some weird trojan horse for THE GAYS and FEMALES to corrupt your poor mind with bizarre propaganda about.... idk buying a Subaru or adopting rescue cats? The very normal humanoid social interactions between romantic partners & friends within the game do not even come close to resembling the Alphabet Mafia insanity that I see screamed about constantly...but never seem to encounter/experience in the real world. The boring, consenting adults having mundane relational dynamics (with fantasy seasoning), will not turn your pet frog gay. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if the inconsequential dialogue options and female characters with agency do in fact make you question your sexuality or feel insecure in your masculinity, you likely had a "pre-existing condition". I played through the whole thing and am still, unfortunately, very straight and as averagely female as they come. ✨Thus I must trudge on through this veil of tears, married to my cishet husband and engaging in monogamous heterosexual banality until we perish at the hands of an LGBehtehQwa Antifa insurgent who "weird science"s in to existence from this game file.✨ I can easily admit that plenty of media products have tried to hide bad writing/cheap and lazy designs/productions behind a forced facade of "diversity" and hollow or completely disconnected "strong female"/(exceptionialistic-feminism-cloaked) PCs- this just isn't one of them. It's a fun, colorful, adventure with dynamic characters. It was well worth the money I paid for it. ------- In summation: It's a novel combo of lots of trending game elements and is worth playing if you've got the money to spare. Play it for yourself and make up your own mind about it.

Every once in a while, a true gem of a game comes along that absolutely reinvigorates my love for the medium. This here is a game that, if I had discovered it around the age I played something like Legacy of Kain, this game would be my entire personality and a formative part of my being for the rest of my life. I am so excited for people to discover this and fall in love with it. The art is beauitiful. Im a games animator and concept artist and this game consistently takes my breath away on that front. Then theres the writing, which is so far ahead of other attempts to tell inclusive stories with diverse characters that it is actually baffling how they achieved such genuinely fantastic story telling and made it so easy. There are exchanges between characters in this game that have actually taught me to reflect on healthier and better ways people can communicate on complex differences. If that isnt world class writing and characterization, I don't know what is. On a gameplay front, there is a lot going on but its packaged in a very easy to digest action adventure wrapper. The team has somehow combined Shadow of Colossus, Monster Hunter, Zelda and also ?extraction looter?! and it all works! It is criminal in how few people know about this game as of my writing this. Do yourself a favor, treat yourself to this game and support game devs who have clearly worked their asses off to make something truly special. What a special, love filled creation. Bravo!

If you're an old BioWare fan, this is what you've been looking for. A charming, brightly colored RPG that combines my favorites from BioWare (storytelling, companion/NPC growth, romance) with a Shadow of Colossus style combat with some magic weaving thrown in. Add some really interesting world-dynamics (temperature, day/night, etc) and I think this is legitimately a fantastic game. I'll be recommending it to everyone I know, and really hope that this title helps solidify the studio's future.

Short answer: buy it! It's worth it. Long answer: this game takes what I see as a lot of great things from a lot of great games, and combines them into something that is both really easy to get into and really interesting. You can tailor your experience to what you want it to be, which is awesome. - The movement is free rather than restrictive (a la Breath of the Wild). - You can always gather more resources, and while that's helpful, there's never a penalty for "running out," they're only ever positive. No punishments. *You have unlimited arrows.* I love it when arrows are either free (like this) or cheap (like the Horizon games). - In almost every situation, you can wait until you're ready to fight a boss, or run away if you decide you're not ready. That progression is entirely up to you. You can even choose to not fight (most of) them if you don't feel like it (kind of like Terraria in that sense). Choosing to defeat them will likely prove helpful in your future endeavors, especially in the knowledge department, but hey. Up to you :). I appreciate difficulty options, because I stink at every game I play, so that's a great thing. It doesn't have to be a souls-like to be fun. You can mix and match armor, and there's no penalty to doing that (you're not missing out on a set bonus). There are pieces of armor that boost you in many ways that you can choose to suit your fancy. Run fast? Climb forever? Be a tank? Can do, buckaroo. The voice acting is incredible and engaging, and while the conversations are concise enough to drag on, there are also tons of extra dialogue options to go through if you want to (or, you can spam click through and skip the conversations in two seconds, but don't, because they're great :) ). And while many people are critical of storytelling and "it has to be perfect," I think this story is genuinely engaging enough to please most of those people. I'm really enjoying it. There's no rush to do anything, ever. You can talk to everyone, every day, spend hours exploring, build up tons of resources and over-prepare for everything, and you don't lose out, which I think is awesome. You could also just rush through only the main quests! One interesting thing is that there isn't a typical leveling system for improvement. But! Don't take that to mean difficulty is stagnant or you don't feel like you ever improve. As you progress, you will find both resources and ways to use those resources that will improve your abilities, as the enemies around you also tend towards being more difficult. There is a very well-balanced combination of personal progression and improvement, increasing knowledge and opportunities at your home base, enemy scaling (not really the right word, as one type of enemy doesn't get harder, I don't think, but different enemies that are harder do pop up in later stages, as expected), and story progression. In my opinion, it is one of the best systems in a game I have played in quite a while. All of this combines into a game I have wholly enjoyed. Because of the things Yellow Brick Games have chosen to do or not do, Eternal Strands is unique, but in my opinion, that is a very good thing. It has great qualities you might come to recognize and relate to other games you have played, but it's not a copy-cat. Again: buy it! It's worth it. (okay now I'm done with the review, I have to go back and play more hehe, things are getting exciting (for the fiftieth time))

This game came out of nowhere and surprised the hell out of me. I only learned about it via a Fully Ramblomatic review (Yahtzee), but the description of it being "Fisher Price Monster Hunter meets Lego Shadow of the Colossus" got me interested enough to buy it. It is an incredibly solid game. its not amazing. its not Earth shaking. However, it is enjoyable, functional, and finished. And in an industry inundated with Eternal Early Access, Live Service, and Rougelike games, having a simple, small scale game that just works and has an enjoyable gameplay loop, and fun characters.... its just... NICE. Its fun and exactly what it needs to be.
