Best Paper Mario since Thousand Year Door, easily stands alongside Bug Fables as one of the best turn-based indie games to mimic the Nintendo Legend. +Banger soundtrack (get the supporter pack) +Hilarious dialogue +Rewarding combat and character building +Puzzles are just right at making you feel clever but not killing your brain +Lots of collectibles and side quests +Perfectly Paced +Runs likes a dream on the Steam Deck +Priced well under what it should be (get the supporter back)

The game is overall really solid if you're looking for a Paper Mario style game I'm currently not close to beating the game, however, there are some pet peeves that I have with it so far. They don't detract from the overall game but some things I'd wish they'd included. No cooking/recipes for item combinations, as far as I've played there's no way to cook or combine items for more powerful ones. What you see to buy at the shops is pretty much what you get. Attack ups don't really work for multi-hit attacks, basic attacks that you use that have 2 or more hits instantly go down to 1 for the second hit. However, some of the special attacks they do gradually go down in power instead of directly to 1. Just not your basics, which is a pet peeve of mine if you've played Paper Mario. Again, just some issues that I feel could've been added to make it even more enjoyable for me. Again, overall a very solid game and would recommend for anyone wanting a Paper Mario-ish game

I lost track of time and played it for start to finish in a single sitting of 19+ hours (with the Pit of 100 Trials equivalent, lacking just a few minor collectibles). It's that good. Slightly harder than its inspiration, but very very fun.

I completely lost track of time while playing this awesome game, spending hours enjoying it without even noticing. I’ve just finished the first part, and it’s already proving to be everything I was hoping for and more: - Excellent writing, charming characters, beautiful visuals, and a compelling story; - Great gameplay with an amazing turn-based combat system, featuring fun action-based timing, item management, and multiple difficulty settings; - A semi-open world with rewarding exploration and clever puzzles; - An outstanding soundtrack, colorful and beautiful locations, memorable characters, office and outfit customization (some of which even seem to unlock special features in different chapters). I’m already calling this one of the best games of the year and the true heir to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, sharing the podium with Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. Highly recommended.

To note, I've played "Escape From Ever After-Onboarding" which was a standalone of the prologue and first chapter, and that took me 4 hours to do everything. The game is inspired by Paper Mario, and you can tell it's made with love. The soundtrack for the prologue is jazzy and just feels nice to listen to as you go through the starting area. The characters somewhat remind me of Shrek at times, with your starting partner being sarcastic, dry, and wanting to murk all her enemies. With the second being a loveable, cheerful goof, to change things around in the party. The world feels so vibrant (and dark at times) and it's so nice to see. The settings are fantasy areas mixed with science, blending the Story Book worlds and the 'Real' World(which also reminds me of how Shrek did it.) The characters also help bring the world to life, with your partners commenting about events just like in Paper Mario. Some are specific to who your partner is at the time, so it'll be interesting replaying with your favorites to see what they say. My only negative feedback is the combat. It didn't change in Onboarding, nor the demo, nor the actual game. Perfect attacking to get the bonus, and perfect blocking to take less damage, is almost impossible. You have to be pixel perfect. People asked for it to be adjusted but it has not been changed. I've played almost all the Paper Mario games, and a few of games based off it, and this combat is the hardest. Luckily you have settings to turn on "perfect attack" and "perfect guard". It's what I did, because I wanted to see more of the game. TLDR: Game is based on Paper Mario, the world and characters are great. Only con is combat being too hard with it being pixel perfect for bonuses, but settings can fix that.
