I'm flabbergasted and shook. I don't know how two people made this. The puzzles, combat, length, atmosphere; all of it is at least double A quality, if not triple. The second to last dungeon might be my favorite of any Paper Mario game and it's not even Paper Mario. There's not much I could say that hasn't already been said by other positive reviews. I typically list pros and cons, but this was all pros. Hard stop. Believe in your dreams. Make art. Play games.

Best Paper Mario since Thousand Year Door, easily stands alongside Bug Fables as one of the best turn-based indie games to mimic the Nintendo Legend. +Banger soundtrack (get the supporter pack) +Hilarious dialogue +Rewarding combat and character building +Puzzles are just right at making you feel clever but not killing your brain +Lots of collectibles and side quests +Perfectly Paced +Runs likes a dream on the Steam Deck +Priced well under what it should be (get the supporter pack)

Often when there is a Paper Mario-inspired title, one might question whether it's worth checking out-- as a large part of the appeal of that series is the titular plumber himself and the world he inhabits. A game can have similar mechanics, along with similar aesthetics, it can draw a lot of inspiration from that beloved series, but it's the execution that ultimately matters. To that I say--- I can't remember the last time I couldn't put down a game. Escape Ever After manages not only to capture the spirit of a Paper Mario game, but it also shows a lot of heart. The colorful worlds, the quirky, yet loveable characters, the absolutely jazzy soundtrack, all tied together with silly bits of dialogue that is sure to make you laugh. I was captivated from the start, and I found myself sinking consecutive 10-12 hour gaming sessions of it. I simply needed to see what happened next. The sense of comradery makes the group feel more connected, bonding as we traversed through the fairy-tale worlds, each with their own twist on the classic tales you know and love. Some jokes you knew where coming because of knowing the fairy-tale, and yet they still managed to catch me off-guard, resulting in many a good chuckle. The story also felt fairly well paced, and more so, managed to catch me off-guard in the direction it went, along with a few heartfelt moments that made me pause for a moment in what had just transpired. The battle system adds a nice layer of challenge, and while it felt slightly daunting at times, it was never due to the game being unforgiving as it was my stubbornness in using the absolutely adorable dragon, Tinder. It truly made me value each party member, as each skillset can truly change how smooth a battle plays out, with no single companion feeling overpowered. There's a good sense of balance in the game, but rest assured to those worried about it being to hard, or those worried lackthereof a challenge, you have different difficulty options. At the time of this review, I finished the game at just a lil over 23 hours, and I can say I felt bittersweet when it was over. While I'm sad my journey was over, I'm happy I can revisit any time I can. As soon as I was done, I was compelled to write a lil review, which might be my 2nd or 3rd ever I've written in my 10 years on Steam, but I loved it so much, I truly hope others give it a chance. If you're looking for a game like the classic entries of the Paper Mario franchise, I cannot stress enough to you that this game is worth all it's worth and more.

10/10 👍 A true soul-successor to PM & PM:TTYD In an era of gaming where games are not really fun and just hyper-money extraction mechanisms; this game shines above the rest delivering an incredible story, witty dialogue, fun mechanics, and tons of extra content for true completionists and trophy hunters. To note, I've played "Escape From Ever After-Onboarding" which was a standalone of the prologue and first chapter, and that took me 4 hours to do everything. The game is inspired by Paper Mario, and you can tell it's made with love. The soundtrack for the prologue is jazzy and just feels nice to listen to as you go through the starting area. The characters somewhat remind me of Shrek at times, with your starting partner being sarcastic, dry, and wanting to murk all her enemies. With the second being a loveable, cheerful goof, to change things around in the party. The world feels so vibrant (and dark at times) and it's so nice to see. The settings are fantasy areas mixed with science, blending the Story Book worlds and the 'Real' World(which also reminds me of how Shrek did it.) The characters also help bring the world to life, with your partners commenting about events just like in Paper Mario. Some are specific to who your partner is at the time, so it'll be interesting replaying with your favorites to see what they say. My only negative feedback is the combat. It didn't change in Onboarding, nor the demo, nor the actual game. Perfect attacking to get the bonus, and perfect blocking to take less damage, is almost impossible. You have to be pixel perfect. People asked for it to be adjusted but it has not been changed. I've played almost all the Paper Mario games, and a few of games based off it, and this combat is the hardest. Luckily you have settings to turn on "perfect attack" and "perfect guard". It's what I did, because I wanted to see more of the game. TLDR: Game is based on Paper Mario, the world and characters are great. Only con is combat being too hard with it being pixel perfect for bonuses, but settings can fix that.
