I really don't understand the hate for this game. Everhood 1 wrapped itself up in a neat, tight package that any direct sequel would've trampled over. Everhood 2 is more of a spiritual successor, heavily inspired by the themes and visuals of its predecessor. If you find the journey to be more memorable than the destination, you will enjoy Everhood 2. I seem to be in the minority of players who found the ending of Everhood 1 to be half-baked and full of hollow platitudes. In a time where every indie game (including Everhood 1) is trying to be "the next Undertale," it's refreshing to play a game that unapologetically enjoys being just that - a game. Entertainment. Vanity. Every character lies to you. Every world ends in ruin. Perhaps there is no meaning to it all. As Everhood 1 said: "There are no Absolute Truths. You are free to wrap your half-truths into whatever, that is the true beauty of it. You can make the rest up." "Go out and make some art." All is vanity, anyway.

Like most people, its hard to evaluate the game on a binary yes/no reccomendation scale. Heres what I think it does better and worse than everhood one : - Combat : The combat is the number one improvement from everhood one. More battles, better battles, good systems, it actually has a lot of depth and it is done well. - Music : Both games have amazing music, hard to say which is better. - Characters : While Everhood 2 has a **lot** more character designs and talkable npcs, like 80% of them are backer designed mushrooms confined to one room. I prefer the quality of character writing in everhood one, as you feel like you get closer to a smaller cast, while everhood 2's companion characters are more inconsistent and less likeable. Not a single person doesnt just see you as for their own gain, you don't make any close connections in that sense. - Humour : Both games have very "random" humour, which can be quite funny if done well. I personally liked both game's jokes and humour evenly. - Story : Story.. Is where everhood 2 falls short. I WANT to love the game's story and themes, I WANT to engage in the philosophical questions it raised like I can for everhood 1 but... Its too incoherent. I can clearly say "everhood one is a game about immortality", and while it obviously won't cover all the game's themes, it conveys an idea of them. I cannot do that for everhood 2. I guess it would be "about godhood" but thats a lot more esoteric and not nearly as deifned. The story has a lot of really good setups and it never resolves them. It could be very good, the devs gave themselves many ways to go to make a story on par with that of OFF for instance, but they never do. It feels like the game at the same time demands deep analysis and also refuses to have any element hold up to scrutiny. - Visuals : Like in the 1st, there are some really trippy visual moments, but with way less consistence of art style. it kinda works, but there are different resolutions of pixel art, some litteral photographs and some 3D renders inhabiting the same space, its jarring. Overall, everhood 2 is a game that has a really good combat system and music, but who's story falls short compared the the first game. I still think people should play it, hence the positive reccomendation, but with the correct expectations. Do play everhood 1 if you havent already tho!

Man, it's such a shame that the story was such a flop. Look, I get it, everything's pointless and you should just enjoy the experience- but uhh.. as much as the gameplay, music, and visuals have improved and are clearly showing how they can hard carry; the story in the first game was something I could dig into, get attached to characters and get somewhat emotional over. The only thing I felt here was confusion. I get that that's the point but... no bueno. THAT BEING SAID, I'm still obligated to give this a positive review because of how amazing the rest of the game is. Viewing it as an arcade-y romp instead of a deep story is probably how it was intended to be seen anyways. Combat feels great, difficulty is a little dulled from the first game focusing on one shots instead of no-hits, but it is what it is. Music is fantastic as always, visuals are trippy and fun to get lost in. If only the story piece was there, I'd feel a lot less conflicted.

Everhood 2. All is vanity. Now, I for one completely understand the story and the message behind it and I agree. The payoff... is kinda... bad(?)... BUT THAT’S THE POINT. As other reviews might have mentioned "It's about the journey" and yeah, it is.... but that's NOT the underlying message. In fact. It was all spelt out and said already in EH1. The story was Everhood 1. If you played it and got the "genocide” ending it alludes to letting go and moving on. You didn't. Hence you continued in Everhood 2 and that the cannon ending was yellow. Because you refused to let go and the game anticipated this, you instead want to keep being entertained, the game knows you're just a human, an outside force. A god. Do you want more Everhood? Sure. Here is the entertainment you wanted and an improved game, more arcadey, we already gave you the story, but if you love the game so much, then the shade will entertain you. Because it never ends in Everhood... As long the player wants more. It's just entertainment for a god refusing to move on, and I suspect that the people are playing along for your entertainment. Why? Remember the statement that keeps repeating "All is vanity" which means: "Everything is meaningless (“vanity”) without a proper focus on God."... Now who is god in this instance? It's you. You give these people meaning, by being the focus. Obviously, the game isn't going to give you a meaningful story, it's about having a fun time and being entertained, hence the ending was so silly. People think a third game would hopefully explain the game... But a third game is not needed for that. The game is explained, but lore would be great, a third game going into the time police and the other planes of existence would be fantastic. But as for this game. Yeah, it's not Everhood 1. Because it's not supposed to be, it's not lazy writing, it's an extension of EV1 of you not moving on. If you don't agree. That's fine. clearly you missed the message... But I do hope that the people who played it have enjoyed their journey and are satisfied with the gameplay. I would recommend this game to everybody, it's still an amazing game. Just... Play Everhood 1 first (twice). Otherwise, this game might be "even worse" Edit: Fixed more horrible English.

Everhood 2 has the unfortunate curse of having to live under the shadow of its predecessor. If the first one did not exist, the many flaws in Everhood 2's narrative would not be as noticeable or complained about by most players. This sequel improves on almost all of the aspects that the original one excelled at: the gameplay, the number of enemies you fight, the charming cast of characters. I could go on, because this game truly is amazing. The biggest issue Everhood 2 has is that the narrative is not rewarding enough for fans who have played and fallen in love with the first game. You finish the game and you almost feel "robbed" because of how "empty" it seems. Whilst 100% completing the game, I thought about the story the game has and the underlying message. Although what I previously said is true, I have come to understand that, because life is random and, in the end, nothing really makes sense or actually matters, it is all about the journey. And this game takes you on so many journeys. THAT is the beauty of it. I think I now understand what the developers wanted to do, and I totally get it. The other controversial topic, which I think hinders the experience, is the implementation of an EXP system and random encounters. I understand the idea of the game being more of an RPG, but forcing repeated encounters on the player becomes tedious really quickly. In short, if the original Everhood is a masterfully handcrafted experience, Everhood 2 is more of that, but like an "arcade" version of it. The focus on the sequel lies more on the gameplay than in the story and, while I prefer the original one, I loved my experience with this game and I definitely recommend it.
