This was a game I played a long time ago as a teen on my friend's account. It stuck with me for a very long time, so I had to come back and play it again as an adult. This is going to be from the perspective of someone who pursued writing as a semi-career, as well, although I will say working on a second book is somehow harder than working on the first. I also didn't grow up with a lot of money-- we relied on foodbanks and foodstamps to get by. All that to say, I related a lot to the characters and stories in this game. Spoilers from here on out. - PROS - I wouldn't say this game is realistic in the sense that you might break into someone's house at some point, but all the problems that the game brings up are real. Not only with poverty and drug addiction, but also in some conclusions to storylines. The detail that both politicians are being supported by Microshaft is something I love a lot, because it reflect how the American politics actually work behind the scenes. That is-- they're mostly corrupt liars who are doing whatever they want just to get their way. I think my favorite thing about that detail, however, is that there's a chance you might not even notice it. It's one of the 'quieter' things about the game that makes it stand out more with what it doesn't choose to say. The reward system is also really nice-- do something like bust up someone's car, and later on that choice might prevent you from leaving the first city earlier. But choose to only do what you have to do, and you're actually rewarded in the long run with an extra day or so to get to your destination. (It also just feels nice knowing you can help someone else leave.) It also means something that you can make the worst choices available and still make it to the wedding at the end of the game. It's almost as if your choices don't matter, because you were able to reach your goal despite them, but that's also the point, I think. The point is that all people are still people, and that all people have the potential to be the worst or best versions of themselves. Side tangent, I'm also amazed at how many differences each run can have depending on what you chose to do and how that effects the second game. I have a lot of respect for the amount of work that must have taken. (Also, the fact characters react differently if you're in a gay relationship is like the cherry on top. Like, I KNOW people who say the things some of these characters say, and you get a different side of them when you're playing as a gay woman as opposed to a straight one.) - CONS - The main thing I can point out as a con is the tediousness of getting money. At the same time, though, I also really like how tedious it is because it's the same feeling I get when trying to make money in real life. It's one of those things that's like, "Yeah, they could have made it easier, and therefore made the game more enjoyable, but would we be missing a key component to the message if they did that?" Another con that I would say this game has is just how often sex or sexual situations come up. But, I'm also asexual and don't always understand the point of including it in stories, so that could be completely on me. Petty complaint time (this doesn't matter), but the designs for the women are so much cuter on the balcony than for the character selection. And then the male designs for inside of the house seem better than the ones on the balcony. Some of the dialogue can be kinda cheesy. I don't think it's too bad. In fact, I might have liked it more when I was a kid than I do now, lol. I do wish there were other gambling options in the cassino, since the only one I was really good at was Black Jack. Lastly, I feel like Sam's character can be a biiiit lackluster compared to the love interest and main character. Their motives for why they want the main character around isn't completely clear. I do like that you can question what kind of person they really are, considering they're willing to take your work and run with it, but outside of them being lowkey a creep towards the love interest before the shabockle, there's not a ton to their character. (Maybe that's because of the second game, where you can play as Sam, so you're defining the kind of person they are from there on out. But considering the dialogue of the self-inserts, it seems like they only started the second game because the first was popular and they wanted to add to it.) It's honestly hard for me to come up with cons just because I'm bias towards the game. There's likely a lot of stuff that I'm not seeing or am maybe excusing because it didn't effect my gameplay. I think it's defiantly worth the play, though, especially if you're playing it for the first time. There are some small moments you might miss, and replayability is super high since there are so many different outcomes. (I can't remember how many endings to the game there are, but there are at least three.) I know this game is old, so my review likely doesn't matter, but I wanted to write one since this is a game that's stuck with me for a long time.

This is the absolute antithesis of algorithmic game design. It’s an RPG with basically no combat, where your primary mechanic is extreme financial desperation. The fact that the game lets you choose your race and sexual orientation at a party, and then actively changes how the world and NPCs react to you based on those choices, makes it a staggeringly deep and often brutal narrative sandbox.

Played the game during an emotional, confusing, and depressing time, and got personally invested in the story. To put it simply, the story is about MC going through a failed relationship, career, and other stuff - though my situation wasn't about an old flame or anything - some of the hardships they encountered hit close to home past and present. Honestly, I do not know what else I can say because these type of stories might not be for everyone, but at the time I played it, it was a good story for me. Playstyle is very similar to the "To the Moon". The choices you make, how you spend your time affect the outcome -or rather how easy or hard you get there, because at the end you don't have MANY choices and although you have an option to end your story one way or the other, one of them is like the true/correct choice. Considering the game is like a dollar during the sales, it's worth its price.

I played this game 11 years ago. I still remember it to this day. Just looking at my achievements was enough to jog my memory about how damn depressing this game was and how much anyone who is hung up on an old flame needs to play it. This was indie art before indie art became a thing.
