TL;DR Get's an unwarranted amount of hate. If you're a fan of survival/crafting/base-building games, and don't care too much about story (there is one it's just not particularly interesting) you'll get your money's worth out of the game without needing to subscribe to Fallout 1st. Details below: I came into this game expecting jank—most reviews go on about bugs, pay-to-win, or it being unplayable without a subscription. As you can see from my hours played, I was pleasantly surprised. For context, I’m not a Fallout fanboy. I’ve played and enjoyed the series, but you don’t need any prior knowledge to enjoy this one. The gunplay is snappy and satisfying, with plenty of variety. Ignore the complaints about recent patches “nerfing all the fun builds”—that mostly comes from salty veterans upset they’re no longer absurdly overpowered. In reality, the patches made more weapons viable, giving you more freedom to craft a build that fits your playstyle. The first few main quests are slow and generic—“go solve our problems because we can’t” type of tasks. But once you get past that (it doesn’t take long) and set up your C.A.M.P., the game opens up. The latest update made base building far more enjoyable: you can now build almost anywhere (as long as it’s not too close to a landmark or another player) without worrying about physics. At first, options are limited, but as you discover more plans (blueprints), customization becomes almost Sims-like. Some of the cooler items are in the cash shop, but you earn Atoms (the premium currency) for free by completing challenges. For reference, many packs with new materials, furniture, etc. cost around 1,500 Atoms—an amount you can easily grind out in your first week. Seasonal rewards also unlock new plans and cosmetics. Yes, some are Fallout 1st–exclusive, but it’s nowhere near Blizzard-level battle pass nonsense. Free-to-play players still get plenty of worthwhile unlocks, like pets for your camp, arcade machines that grant stat boosts, and more. Gear customization is another highlight. Almost everything can be modded to boost resistances or damage types, or rolled into a legendary with unique bonuses like explosive projectiles, cloaking while stationary, or elemental retaliation. Weapons can be further tweaked for range, fire rate, accuracy, and stability, with mods also changing their appearance. Combine this with the wide variety of perk cards, and you’ve got tons of options for fun, satisfying builds. One common gripe is limited storage, which Fallout 1st subscribers bypass. It’s a fair critique, and it bothered me at first. But I quickly realized you can craft “junk” into “bulk” and sell it to NPC vendors. There’s a daily cap, but it’s not an issue until mid-to-late game. As a non-subscriber, I’ve only found storage limiting if I try to hoard everything. For most players, scrapping and selling regularly keeps things manageable. Another annoyance is that most main story quests take place in instanced zones, and only the leader gets quest progress. This is frustrating in groups, but the quests are short and soloable. Alternatively, you can rotate leadership and repeat them—everyone still gets XP and loot, so it’s not a dealbreaker. Overall, there’s a lot of fun here for different playstyles. Builders can spend hours perfecting their bases. Theorycrafters have endless ways to blow things up, melt enemies, or stab them—plus two free loadout slots for experimenting. Explorers will find plenty too; I’m level 165 and still discovering unmarked locations that grant XP and fast travel points. The community is also welcoming—higher-level players often hand out gear to newcomers, and you can join events for rewards regardless of level. You don’t need a subscription to enjoy the game. If that’s been holding you back, ignore the misinformed hate—and if you see me in Appalachia, wave hello!

Well I waited until I had 1000+ hours in before writing this, so now here goes. I've been a Fallout fan from the first game, played all them in between and like so many of the old one's, this one has problems, clipping graphics, bodies that fly off after into the great blue yonder, money grabs etc. The game has been both fun and frustrating at the same time, Hell I had to re-purchase the game due to all my past games were deleted by them and non-recoverable (It was years before). I'm medically retired now due to cancer, and bored so I came back. Lots of good changes were added, and some bad, it seems the way of games anymore, well in all truth, it always has been. I will end this by saying, don't take everything seriously, enjoy what you can and knowing that, the game can be fun and always remember that "War, War never changes." both internally and externally.

After 1,000 Hours and 455 levels, I've learned a few things from fallout 76. Its way better now than on initial release. Yeah there are still buggs here and there. glitching with entering / exiting Power Armor, some quest-line bugs, and some visual bugs. They come and go but don't occur very often for me. This game is great with friends or to relax. You don't have to use the most "OP" build to have fun. All of the Creatures in the game scale with your level, except for bosses. Like most other games this is a fun "Shoot and Loot" game. The Pros - Base Building almost anywhere, if you can imagine it you can make it happen. From a base Decorated to be Identical to a Raider Camp, to a roadside gas station. - The player base is Incredibly Friendly, I've only have 1 encounter with an unfriendly player in my 1,000 hours. - You don't have to grind for anything. no need to spend Hours running West-Tek or the Raids to gain hundreds of levels, play at your own pace. The Cons - Fallout First Membership, to have a Unlimited Scrap / Ammo storage behind a Paywall is not so good. But with careful Inventory management it is possible to keep under 1200 Weight in your STASH. You will just have to not save that one Legendary Gatling Plasma you found 4 months ago, and sell your excess ammo / plans. I'm not the best at writing reviews, but i liked this game enough to put some words on the Reviews page for strangers to look at then scroll by. Thanks - GamerDad2119

Everyone knows the history of the game since launch so lets bypass the comparison with how it launched and go straight to how it is now. Also let's bypass what Fallout is and assume that you already know. Is it Fallout? Yes, like the other games its catered to a certain area which is unique in its own way, Fallout 76 is a modern version of the game. Are you avoiding it because it's online? Stop worrying and give it a go, Appalachia is ready now and waiting for you. I was cautious on this one and held off several times, but once you give it a go, you will see it isn't a factor and actually enhances the experience for this game (not saying there isn't a place for single player Fallout). Can you play solo? Yes you can. You don't need to play with others, have a crew, play it a specific way at all. The online component is there to enhance the experience, but you don't need to worry about it at all if you don't want to. Community events can be joined and left at will without needing to know or join anyone. Do you need to pay a subscription? Its up to you, the game is completely playable without it. I have played with on one on and off and its handy but definitely not essential. Certainly up front play it without Fallout 1st and make your decision while playing if you need it or not. Do I need to buy things? No. You really don't, there are a lot of free elements around that will keep you active, any purchases are there to enhance the base game for those that want them. There is enough to do and see without needing to purchase. What is the community like? Its one of the (if not THE) best online communities out there for online games, don't be afraid to start out and see big numbers on player levels, most are more than generous helping out new players and making sure you get a positive experience from the game. Is it like the TV show? It's a different part of the overall story, but factions are the same and there are a lot of familiar elements. There are also updates coming to cross over a bit more if that is what you are after. Is there replayability? Yes, you can play as long as you feel like you have interest in it. Once the story has finished there is still a lot that can be done with events, challenges and general exploring of the map. Every season brings new challenges and things to do with it. What are seasons? Seasons are regular releases of Fallout 76 that introduce events, sometimes areas, updates, tweaks, new gear. This is all layered onto the base game, so the core story isn't impacted by seasons. Why shouldn't I play? First and foremost, if you don't like Fallout is a good first start, its post apocalyptic and very styalised to a certain feel. It also isn't just a FPS, there are all sorts of elements in this game that expand on just being a shooter. If you are a Fallout purist, there are things and items available to build at times that might make you feel a bit like its not cannon or is not really Fallout. These aren't major and are mostly aesthetic items people build at camps, but its a consideration all the same. You are looking for a quick play, Fallout games are not a quick finish and take time. Most players have several hundreds of hours in the game so if you are looking for a quick turnover this isn't the game for you. Why should I listen to you? If you are still reading down here, just give it a go.
