April 2025
I like anything magic-related in my games, so when I heard that Forspoken was magic-focused, I was intrigued and picked it up during a sale. To my surprise, I actually really enjoyed the combat and parkour—it’s some of the best I’ve seen in a game centered around magic. There’s a wide variety of spells, each feeling distinct from the others. Swapping between them is fun and keeps the gameplay fresh. The parkour system is also a highlight: it’s fluid, fast, and satisfying when you're zipping across the map. However, the stamina limitation becomes frustrating, especially in the early parts of the game. Where Forspoken really suffers is in everything else. The writing is pretty rough, and Frey is one of the most obnoxious protagonists I’ve ever played. I don’t mind quippy dialogue, but they went completely overboard here—worse than the main character in Atomic Heart. Most of the supporting characters are forgettable and one-dimensional. The story is painfully generic, and the plot twist is so predictable that it turns the narrative into a triple-decker combo of clichés—in the worst way possible. Then there’s the open world. Oh boy, this one hurts. The map is bloated with an overwhelming number of checklist-style objectives. It’s packed to the brim and ends up feeling like a chore. I could’ve looked past that if the side content had some variety, but it’s always the same formula: “go here, clear this, find notes, take a photo.” It quickly becomes repetitive. Some locations are also so poorly designed that you just don’t want to bother going there at all. Honestly, I wish I could leave a neutral review. As much as I’ve criticized it, I still enjoyed parts of the game thanks to its engaging combat and parkour. Forspoken had a lot of potential, and it’s unfortunate how many aspects were mishandled. I totally get where the backlash is coming from—they really dropped the ball in several key areas. 6.5/10

The combat and movement are both fantastic, some of the best I have come across. I had so much fun that I ended up going for 100% achievements and despite many of the poi's I had to visit for this feeling similar, the magic combat made clearing them a joy. Sadly the story feels somewhat undercooked. The broad strokes of the narrative are solid, but the execution falls flat. Dialog is rather hit or miss. The graphics are alright overall but the facial animations are... not great. Overall game is definitely worth picking up in a sale if you want to have fun blasting things with magic.

I really enjoyed this game, and I don't think it deserves most of the hate it gets online. The combat and movement in the open world are extremely fun and beautiful. That being said, the controls can be awkward at times and the MC is a real asshole for most of the game. I don't think it's worth the $69.99 original price tag, but definitely worth it when it's on sale. Sadly, I doubt we'll see a sequel or any more DLC, but I'm looking forward to playing "In Tanta We Trust" and exploring the world more post-credits.

I had my reservations about this game because the general sentiment surrounding this game wasn't great. I ended up picking it up on sale just to see what it was all about, since I had saw combat and trailer footage and the gameplay seemed pretty fun to me. Let me just say that you won't be disappointed by the gameplay: the open-world traversal and magic combat are both amazing and fun. I don't think I've played a game with traversal so fast and fluid. It truly is something to be lauded at. The magic combat is super in-depth and engaging as well. There are so many different attacks, support, and parkour spells that really keeps you on your toes throughout the campaign. The beginning does start a bit slow, so please don't let that deter you because the game only really starts once you get through the first couple hours. Story wise, the developers have simplified it so that the overarching narrative objective is made very clear early on, but there are twists towards the end that I think most people would be surprised about and that lends a bit more to the story than what would be fairly standard fantasy writing. Unfortunately, there are tonal inconsistencies and awkward moments throughout the story, so get ready for some head scratching. After the campaign, there are still some activities you can finish, and, there are some hidden bosses around the map that are worth fighting (I won't spoil them, but there are guides online). I certainly had a blast playing this game and all of its parts, so I might be biased but, that being said, I've seen people say that the open world is quite barren, and my rose-tinted glasses aside, I hate to agree, but it's true to some extent. The map certainly doesn't look empty: there are countless landmarks and clusters of enemies to encounter. But I think where the complaint is coming from is that, despite an ENORMOUS open world map, most of the points of interests and activities are rather quite monotonous aside from the occasional boss fight. Once you fully unlock your power set, there are bosses you can fight, or you can revisit some of the bosses you fought throughout the campaign once you reach the end so there's that. Performance is something that needs to be discussed. I was running Forspoken on a 3080, and I had to make concessions to get the game to run the way I wanted. At 1440p, I had to turn down quite a few graphical options to get the game to run at 120fps. Granted, that is a really high bar (but I would say is worth trying out because it makes the parkour even better), but even after the developers optimized the way the game runs, it's still a very demanding game. I would say 60fps is the minimum to fully experience this game well. Even with the highest settings, the image was just... fine, so don't play this game with the expectation to be wowed by it's graphics. Aside from graphics, there are settings you can change to make the game easier/harder depending on your comfort (e.g. settings like auto-evade, auto spell switch, auto healing, and damage taken). Closing thoughts (TLDR): All of this to say, I think the game is mostly fine. It's not spectacular, but with its current state I think it also shouldn't get the flack that it once got. The combat and parkour are definitely highlights of the game, and very few other titles are quite like it in those aspects. The story is held together with superglue and popsicle sticks with it's tonal inconsistencies and straight up awkward pacing and interactions. Graphics leaves something to be desired because it just runs serviceably with quality not really representing the amount of resources it uses. I would recommend.

I watched some popular streamers shitting on this game while playing it. They were very entertaining, but I saw some interesting things about the game. I pulled it up on STEAM and it was 70% off. I thought for $20 it seemed like a deal. It was. The game is worth $70, but I would not pay that because I am 71 and cheap. The game has a learning curve, but once mastered, the game is fantastic. For $20 this is one hell of a bargain.
