Dec. 2025
I bought this game for Steam on release day. I was just looking for something that would stress my system and wanted a new open-world experience. Stress my system it did. It was a buggy, poorly-optimized mess. I let it incubate, and toughed through the frame drops, and unlike Capcom with Monster Hunter Wilds, Squeenix actually committed to patching the living crap out of the game to get the optimization right. Within the first month the game was playing running like smooth, warm butter. Stunning visuals and virtually no stutters on an AM4 with RTX 3070ti. With a RX 7800XT I now play on Epic settings with no Frame gen, and get easily 80FPS or better at 1440p. Its beautiful, really. Stunning sights, and exciting and snappy gameplay. Magic system should be a model for these types of games going forward. Frey, is a tough protagonist to love. Let's get that out of the way. Shift your personal paradigm and its not hard to view the world with her pessimism. She matures with the story so stay the course. The banter with Cuff is annoying at first, but it grows on you. This game needed to breathe, and now more than 2 years later, I think it's worth a second look from everyone. Did it deserve the vitriol? At launch, absolutely. There is no excuse for launching a broken game. But now? If you can get it for $30 or less, you absolutely should snag it. (At time of this review it is $20.99 on Steam and I got a copy of it for PS5 for my shelf for $18 through Best Buy). It has one of those conclusions that keeps you thinking about it after you experienced it. A fairly immersive story that admittedly seems to be missing some exposition after the first main area, is filled out a great deal more in the DLC. Add it to your library and give it a try. Its far from a waste, and it may surprise you.

Forspoken is a cool game; I had a lot of fun playing it. Could it have been better? Sure. For as big as the world is, I would have welcomed some more main story content, or more fleshed out optional content. Still there additional challenges, items, upgrades, cool things to see if you do explore the game world, so it's still a good game overall. I've seen some of the negative reviews, and I definitely disagree with many of their points such as: - Some find the world "too big." It is a big game world, but you also gain the ability to move very fast, so I think the world size if fitting for what the game is, I had no issue there. - Some people don't like Frey. I don't have a problem with her. I also don't mind the banter between her and Cuff; can get a little repetitive if you fight in the same zone for a while, but that's a minor complaint; usually I find their talk to be pretty fun. - The price. Hey I've played brilliant games that are under 5 bucks, and mediocre ones that are over 60, so price is tricky to judge so in the end I just want to know is the game good? I think it is, and I usually wait for a sale on most games I buy, so it was definitely worth the price I got it for. I played plenty of hours too, so even if I had gotten it at full price, couldn't complain much. - Technical issues. I didn't find many, some minor ones sure, but nothing I haven't seen in other games I play, and nothing game breaking. All in all this game ran pretty smoothly for me. - Marketing, I guess some had issue with how it was advertised and expected a different style game? I guess I might be biased since I typically don't pre-order games, and i typically wait for well after launch for the devs to do bug fixes and stuff, so I don't really know what others were expecting. I liked what I got. - Too many cutscenes. I definitely don't agree there, most of my hours spent were gameplay. I could go on, but I liked it. The spells and combat are fun, interesting, and have really cool visual effects. The bosses are challenging. When leveling up you really see yourself improve; some enemies are basically impossible when you're under leveled/under geared, but easy when you've got the right stuff. Even at Top level though, there are some tough fights out there to check out. The story may not be mind-blowing, but it's good, and it's fun. I liked Forspoken, and I do recommend it.

The fluid combat and over all traversal mechanics are some of the most fun in a video game I've ever had the fortune to experience. The combat and parkour traversal meld together to create something seamless and spectacular to play. The designs of many of the enemies are very interesting to look at and fighting groups of them when you have all your magic at your fingertips, makes for some very enjoyable and visually stunning fights. The VFX and effects of everything magic is magnificent and dazzling. I particularly love olas's magic aspect, the green course through fights was mesmerizing to me. I did quite a lot in this game, and the main reason I continuously played it so much was because of these mechanics that made you feel free and fast when wandering the world. Supplementing this were how powerful you can get, and really make you feel as though you've grown, it is very rewarding. There are also some very nicely designed cloaks and necklaces you can adorn the main character Frey with. The majority of the cloaks are very distinct, with many having intricate patterns and appearing in a few colors; red, blue, white, rose, gold, etc. Unlocking them to wear is a fun challenge and adds to the exploration. The necklaces follow the same form, they are pleasing to the eye, some are more ornate than others. I am glad I decided to put so much time into this game, it was an enjoyable experience and I will come back to play it again, the developers did an amazing job with making the game that you play, move, control and experience fun at it's very core. I wish they would continue and build on what they have here. Not many other games offer freedom of action like this, the flow has been carefully crafted and created, and you are able to feel it.

Buy it at <$20 The Good: Magics, castings, and animations in general are very satisfying If you like cheesy puns and jokes, you will have a fun time Graphics are mostly good, but can be inconsistent in some regions The Not So Good: The environments are cool and pretty and all, but the world feels very empty if you want to explore side quests The story is too much of a cliché I haven't encounter any optimization issue per se, but my 4090 is working way too hard running this game, playing Indiana Jones on highest setting is much quieter than lowest setting on this, no idea how it would perform on a lower end pc The Bad: Gameplay is super fun at first, but it gets repetitive pretty quickly, combine that with the fairly empty world, the game gets boring after awhile

April 2025
I like anything magic-related in my games, so when I heard that Forspoken was magic-focused, I was intrigued and picked it up during a sale. To my surprise, I actually really enjoyed the combat and parkour—it’s some of the best I’ve seen in a game centered around magic. There’s a wide variety of spells, each feeling distinct from the others. Swapping between them is fun and keeps the gameplay fresh. The parkour system is also a highlight: it’s fluid, fast, and satisfying when you're zipping across the map. However, the stamina limitation becomes frustrating, especially in the early parts of the game. Where Forspoken really suffers is in everything else. The writing is pretty rough, and Frey is one of the most obnoxious protagonists I’ve ever played. I don’t mind quippy dialogue, but they went completely overboard here—worse than the main character in Atomic Heart. Most of the supporting characters are forgettable and one-dimensional. The story is painfully generic, and the plot twist is so predictable that it turns the narrative into a triple-decker combo of clichés—in the worst way possible. Then there’s the open world. Oh boy, this one hurts. The map is bloated with an overwhelming number of checklist-style objectives. It’s packed to the brim and ends up feeling like a chore. I could’ve looked past that if the side content had some variety, but it’s always the same formula: “go here, clear this, find notes, take a photo.” It quickly becomes repetitive. Some locations are also so poorly designed that you just don’t want to bother going there at all. Honestly, I wish I could leave a neutral review. As much as I’ve criticized it, I still enjoyed parts of the game thanks to its engaging combat and parkour. Forspoken had a lot of potential, and it’s unfortunate how many aspects were mishandled. I totally get where the backlash is coming from—they really dropped the ball in several key areas. 6.5/10
